HagarTheHorrible Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Thick and fast after the revelation about voice comm's comes the revelation of migoto zoom. I nearly gave up on playing flight sims, i seemed to spend more time fannying about adjusting buttons and settings, this, that and the other, and usually taking two steps back for every step forward, that I hardly had any time left for actually playing flight sims. Not so long ago I paired my peripherals and set up right back to just a MSSW FFB stick and a throttle quadrant. Because I play in VR, I use Voice Attack for all the other buttons and actions that I need, trying to keep it as simple as possible. I've used VR since it first came out, it's been great, but it certainly isn't perfect. Because I didn't want to spend too much time adjusting settings and buttons etc etc I hadn't really delved into Migotos MOD, I had it enabled, but because I was happy, or so I thought, with the in-game 1.5 X zoom, i didn't spend time dialing out the errors, double vision and offset view. Peering under the mask and trying to press the correct combination of buttons to adjust the view, well that was just too much like the old days. I played on, happy in my ignorance, but knowing, that in some aspects, I was playing at a disadvantage compared to other players when it came to spotting contacts. With the implimentation of the Simshaker software for jetseats and bass amps into the game , and setting that up to my liking I thought I may as well play around with other aspects of my experience as well. Talk about an eye opener, quite literaly, I adjusted and dialed in the zoom functions of migoto's MOD (X-10, X-5) and used "joytokey" to assign them to buttons on my joystick. It's like night and day, I'm not suggesting it makes me a better pilot or that I've suddenly aquired some form of cloak of inviincability, but now, for the first time since using VR I can spot and better identify contacts miles away. Contacts that I should have been able to see, but couldn't, are now readily identifiable, even more importantly I can now get enough warning of their atitude and intentions that I can make proper decisions about positioning and tactical awareness. Before, with just the ingame zoom, I would have to get so close that all tactical advantage went out the window. I can now understand how other players could spot and track my aircraft with ease when I couldn't even see them. It also makes a big difference to seeing what flak is shooting at, with normal, or 1.5 X zoom, the flak apears to be shooting at nothing, with the 5 or 10 X zoom I can easily see the target (which isn't always as close as one might think). Like I say, it certainly doesn't make me invincable, it maybe brings my spotting into line with non VR players, I can't remember what it was like, but it's much, much better. It is very difficult for other players to hide, especially down low and with voice comm's, it would be the easiest thing in the world to direct attackers onto most intruders, even if they're pretty much up at the other end of the map (it might have been unique to the lighting conditions, but I don't think so). If I'm honest, it does feel a bit too good, I can't be bothered to try and test it and compare it to non-VR, but it's a game changer for me. 1
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 (edited) Yes the zoom from this mod is very useful, btw try next revaltion - exorcist view , with it you can check six with one key bind to joystick you might be competitive to trackIR guys even more! J5_HellCat_ Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 @HagarTheHorrible He's right you know ...... I use all all three and your going to want this ? https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/58417-how-to-add-rotation-angle-to-check-your-six-in-vr/ It might seem tricky to setup at first but its worth it in the end ....Good Luck! Talisman Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 (edited) Hagar, Thanks for your post. I have a question/reservation about the zoom mod which you may be able to help me with. With that much zoom, do you lose situational awareness a lot and how good is it for scanning around for bandits if the zoom is so magnified on only a small area of the sky? I have not installed this mod because I can't reason (in my small brain) why I would use it other than to better identify aircraft I have already spotted any way. I am looking to be convinced a little more before I go for it. Thank you again. Happy landings, 56RAF_Talisman P.S. Just had a thought. Does it help a lot with map reading using landmarks? HagarTheHorrible Posted February 15, 2020 Author Posted February 15, 2020 (edited) Just get it, and spend a little time dialling it in, if my little brain can get around optimising it and assigning it to joystick buttons then you’ll have no problem. Situational awareness is much better, using the mod. Flipping between the default (in game) 1.5 zoom, the 5 X zoom and the 10 X zoom is much better because you have a far better picture of the air space around you and what’s going on, you not only haves a much better understanding of what a contact is, but also intentions and if it poses a threat, you can start making tactical decisions. I tend to use the 10 X zoom to identify bogies and look at places I know I can expect bogies to be, I then use 5 X zoom to keep tabs on those contacts that I know are there, but can’t clearly see. Because you have a much more certain understanding of what occupies the airspace around you you can be more relaxed about using the zoom buttons longer than might otherwise seem prudent, which only increases your SA. Your SA is improved and that allows you even more time, for less risk, to take your time and look about while zooming, to better increase your SA. I don’t know about helping with map reading. If up high and with a good terrain draw distance, I would have thought so. If you use 10 X zoom then the ground textures, out far, can become a bit muddy, although you can still detect aircraft, they don’t wash out at the same distance. I certainly used the zoom to better identify the airfield I was trying to head towards, but I knew roughly where it was and just used the zoom to pinpoint it. BMA_Hellbender Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Cheats! Gaming the game! Etc, etc... VR really does offer many advantages, not to mention that it just looks amazing. I mean, it looks real. Even without mods, you can move your head out of bounds and look above (and through) the wing and parts of the fuselage. Clarity is still a problem, and so is ease of access to keyboard and chat — and so I'm back to using my 2D screen full time. In a year or 5 (10?) when hardware has completely caught up, and provided VR hasn't fizzled out by then, it will probably cease all hopes of productivity in the civilized world, and society will inevitably grind to a halt as VR supersedes reality. Then in a few thousand years, a race of advanced space-faring dolphins finds our deserted planet, littered with skeletons, headset still attached. "How did they all die out, dad? What did the box on their heads show them?" "Sopwith Camels and boobs, son. Sopwith Camels and boobs." Unfortunately, junior has no idea what either of those are. 2
HagarTheHorrible Posted February 15, 2020 Author Posted February 15, 2020 Oh, my eye sights bad, I read that as “ Space Farting Dolphins”. Nobody can hear you fart in space, but it does give you a little boost.
