PUA:Win32/Packunwan

Recently got warning from WD when starting DCS. Seems like ED says "Be happy, don't worry!" and cannot or will not resolve the issue. Bummer!

Antivirus programs use heuristics and produce lots of false positives - so I wouldn't worry, I'd just add an exception. DCS is such a complex piece of software, the fact that some code ends up looking suspicious really isn't that surprising (to me, anyway).

Assuming a false positive is not a good game plan☹️

If you trust the source of the software - then it is probably a false positive. If you don't trust the source, then it is safer to assume it is a genuine threat.

There is no way of knowing the actual source of the app, how many installs have been affected or in what locales. In effect, I either whitelist the file or lose access to the software I have purchased.

AV flags like this are likely to persists with RB modules and even increase until the matter is resolved.  My view is that RB aint playing with ED so cant be altering code in a patch and ED isnt playing with RB so wont be either able or willing to update anything for a patch. Therefore something got outdated and I can take my tin hat off on this occasion. Not saying its the right view but that were Im at trust wise.

Now, if you will excuse me, Im expecting a package from a Nigerian Prince. Should be exciting, ive paid a fortune to their customs to get it released.....poor man, cant beleive he picked me to take care of all his gold.

I don't seem to even have bought any RB modules🤕

^ Not uncommon, as these false positives have been happening for years with non-RB modules as well.

Send the suspicious file to your AV program provider for investigation, disable (not uninstall) affected aircraft in module manager so that it doesn't bother you every time you launch the game and fly another one in the meantime.

I validated the DCS files on Steam and Defender immediately flagged the offending file downloaded during validation. Given the recent instability at ED and seeing many recent posts about AV's flagging their DRM app I'm just not feeling lucky right now. Something is up and I hope ED can fix it without just saying "trust me".Threatprot01.thumb.jpg.ffdcb5b55d00f92b20880ddeb338d8d7.jpg

Scanned my Steam DCS subfolder with newest Bitdefender. It´s clean. So I suspect MS Defender is producing a false positive. FWIW.

Packunwan is not actually a virus, but the virus scanner detects a compressed and/or encrypted file. An actual virus can use this to hide from the virus scanner, but of course there are also legitimate uses, like keeping a module small or preventing people from hacking or distributing modules.

Thanks! The offending file is:

file:_E:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\DCSWorld\Mods\aircraft\F-4E\bin\HeatblurJester.dll

Once I disabled the F4E I was able to run DCS without issue🤞

Of course now I have lost access to an expensive module.😒

Just add an exception? There is no reason to stop using the F-4E.

Yes, I could do that. Unfortunately though, there is no way for me to know whether MD or ED/Heatblur are at fault. There was no problem using the F4E when I first bought the module. Now there is. That is what is knowable. Thanks for the advice!

The problem is on your end - the end. :)

Hope you get it sorted.

If you are using any software, you end up having to trust whoever programmed it. I trust ED and Heatblur enough to use their software, I have to trust WD (I'm given no choice), and if I'm running windows - I know there will be a lot of less trustworthy software or scripts running that I should be worrying about more.

So I'd recommend just adding the exception and relaxing.

Sorry, no "special parking" placards for ED/Heatblur😉

Should I buy the Gazelle?

I've hovered over the button for years and never committed due to its state in the past. Has all that now been propery resolved?

@BOO, I own the Gazelle and I believe most of those issues have been resolved. It does not fly on rails any more. The forum has a post completely dedicated to this topic. The problem is more with DCS’s AI. AI fighters home in on if the come in a certain range like you are operating a beacon. Ground AI is even worse because they can spot you through trees and (some) buildings and once spotted they have perfect SA on you and relocating does not brake this SA. Result you die because the Gazelle is pretty fragile.

I do play SP only so your experience online may differ.

@RedeyeStorm Thanks for this. Its in the sale so seems as good a time as any to buy. I tend to dumb down the AI with altitude triggers in the ME in SP and only tend to fly my own makings for the reasons stated.

@BOO, can you tell me some more about that trigger setup? Is it easy to implement in existing missions like Through the Inferno?

Unlikely to be easy at all given how many options THI uses.

The way I do it is really dumb but its to simply denote 2 danger areas for AAA using concentric zones then set conditions for the AAA to operate in those zones.

In the closer zone (set to 50- 60% of the range of AAA) I use  the AGL and  speed  of the aircraft.  The AI's default ROE is hold fire in RED state. Its triggered option is to Free Fire once conditions are met (So Player Aircraft exceeds 25M AGL (and or) Player aircraft speed <150 km/h) etc.

In the larger zone I use only the AGL to better allow for hover and may raise it slighly if im in the KA50 or AH64.

Where Ive got multiple AAA in a small areas that might conflict with each I will likey put them under the same zone for simplicity.

Once AAA is triggered I dont option any switch off as I think if you show the AAA would likely blaze away into any cover if they spotted you though i might play with an off trigger once you leave the larger zone when i get back into flying.

As I say, its dumb but it keeps me and the AI a little more honest. Im sure there are better ways.

For flying it is great. DL this mission for it

https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3336250/

For shooting down other ac it is a great recourse but is kind of difficult to go hunting ground targets in

you need to be smart, without labels.
I will say Kiowa is dearly and clearly a better choice.

Gazelles second fm was in my opinion the best. But it only benefitted those with very good joysticks. Basically all the other fm’s coming after that was an attempt to accommodate most people’s hardware. Latest patch is a compromise all can live with. But to me it lost some of its agility. I do not talk realism, I talk fun to fly. I have no idea about realism.
Anyway it is a solid piece of software

Triggers can be easy to set if you are patient and just play along. In my pc things take time loading both mission and mission editor. So setting triggers and delay is a long time waiting on loading while testing.
It is hard to describe but quite easy to understand if you play with it for a while.
ME is intuitive up to a certain point, then it become Latin , at least for me

Have a conversion app ready. I think (only think) the Alt is in metres and the speed in knots. Leave a little leeway with both or play with the G/S tick in the waypoint section of the ME to. If you are using both alt and speed also remember to use the "OR" option in the triggers box and put a unit in zone command in each group (Alt and Speed).

AI helos tread there own path as well so if one of them is tagging along you might need to use much broader conditions for them not to fall foul.

Same here. It kind of took some fun out of everything and put it on top of the fun it provided

I find a new layer for every glimpse I take it is an onion.
Now Carsten Gurk made a script in order to direct artillery for it too.

I'm happy to hear this...this is good for everyone.

BTW a few says ago I was outside moving a sprinkler, and I hear WHOP WHOP WHOP WHOP approaching behind the tree line, and loud...like thunder and getting louder.

I thought "nah, never seen one of those around here, can't be"  but sure enough, a few seconds later an MH-47 (Spec Ops version of the CH-47) breaks over the tree line, right over my head, and LOW. That was...no other term for it...BAD ASS. What a cool helo.

No helicopter (You know, a helicopter only is an amount of loose parts flying more or less in the same direction ... ;)).

Indeed, waiting for it to download as I type!

Edit, after fully going through the patch notes, I foresee a new game being popular for a while (at least with me) with the inclusion of the air boss for the super carrier, played out on the dangerdogz server, and that will be me turning the carrier as people are on final. over and over and over 🤣 (I swear I saw a submarine, honest guvnor)

It lists a fair bit, turning while flat out:

In other news, I can confirm that Larnaca harbour is too shallow for a CVN. And that if you run aground hard enough, full astern won't move you.

Anyone up for around-Cyprus carrier racing?
