Here is the link to my pilots notes for the new Flying Circus II DFW C.V released the other week. The data and ratings are from the old Rise of Flight manual, and the ratings probably still apply for the Flying Circus planes relative to each other.

The ROF version did not offer any controls over mixture or radiator, and as far as I can tell that is also the case for our Flying Circus II version. If there are any engine controls (other than throttle, of course), please let me know what they are and I can add in a mention those are manually controllable.

Hi guys just a question on all the extra notes added by others do they require the install tool used by the original or is it a case of drag and drop? My understanding if they’re drag and drop is that they will need reinstalling everytime there is an aircraft update? Sorry if this is wrong my knowledge of this stuff is very limited.

No, the photos won't need to be re-installed if you make a copy of the "new" cockpit_photo.dds file, and slightly rename it to say cockpit_photo_hurri.dds for example.  Then if for whatever reason the cockpit_photo.dds gets overwritten to those gawd-awful original pics, it is an easy fix, just re-copy the remamed file back to cockpit_photo.dds and you're good to go.

Do you have one for the P-51B? Thanks  TC

I want to create one tonight before I am away from my gaming computer for a week or two, but I probably won't have time, darn it

How about some love for the new P51?

So they are drag and drop then or do I need the mod tool? Thanks.

@GunshellDrag and drop, but make sure you have a backup of the updated cockpit photo called something OTHER than cockpit_photo.dds

For example, my Hurri cockpit photo backup is custom_photo_Hurri.dds

Drag this into the Hurricane Textures folder, make another copy of it there, and rename the copy custom_photo.dds, replacing the custom_photo.dds there (if you REALLY want, you can rename the original custom_photo.dds to something else, so at least you still have it).

If ever you do a repair, the custom_photo.dds will be over-written, but since you already have the backup in the folder (this will not be over-written), just re-copy it and rename the copy as above

Or just save the whole new 'planes' folder to one side and if anything goes wrong just copy that folder back into the ???\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics and it will just replace the cockpit photos back to the pilots notes you wanted.

Or use JSGME as well.  Many ways to skin this cat.  ?

I’m still away from my gaming machine for about a week, but after reading the P51B5 tech specs posted elsewhere in the forums, the pilot’s notes that the OP, Storebror, posted originally for the P51D15 include the same engine specs that also apply to the P51B5.

So, anyone with the P51D15 pilot’s notes can simply copy that custom_photo.dds file from

 \IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\Planes\P51D15\Textures\

into

 \IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\Planes\P51B5\Textures\

I won’t know for sure until I can update my copy of the game when I get home, but perhaps the only difference I would make to the P51D note to make it match more precisely the P51B is to change the percentage of mixture that corresponds to auto rich. Below is what Storebror’s P51D notes look like.

I have already copied over the “D” pilot notes. I do very much look forward to a “B” specific note of your creation!

Between our P-51-D15 and our P-51-B5 I found three differences I wanted to personally document in my own copy of the Pilots Notes for our P-51-B5:

- According to Requiem at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNJvPqfocGA (and LukeFF confirmed in the update thread when this bird was released), our P-51-B5 has a manual Boost option for up to 5 minutes
- The Mixture setting labels in our P-51-B5 are Autolean and Autorich, so I indicate Autorich as the manual mixture setting
- I added a line that bombs drop in pairs (since unlike the D model this B model can only drop bombs in pairs

So, for those interested, here is the link to my slightly personalized pilots notes for the P-51-B5:

Download and save into \IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\data\graphics\Planes\P51B5\Textures\

All data is simply taken from the plane specifications the devs provide in the game

Even though noone is clamoring for them, here are links to my pilots notes for the new Flying Circus II Handley Page 400 and Gotha G5 released a few weeks ago. The data and ratings are from the old Rise of Flight manual, and the ratings certainly still apply for the Flying Circus planes relative to each other since these are big old bombers.

For you completists, I also created my slightly different version of the pilots notes for the Ju88 C6 also recently released. The only difference between what was noted about the Ju88 A4 and the new Ju88 C6 is there are no dive brakes on the Ju88 C6.

Hey I noticed the dds files I downloaded are over 4MB, where the standard cockpit photo is just over 1MB. Is this an issue?  I know if a skin isn't EXACTLY the right size the game does not render it

There MAY be mipmaps included, which would certainly explain a larger file size?...

Makes sense.  I JUST noticed the P51B file is also 4MB, and it works fine

Huh... I never bothered to notice that my more recent pilots notes larger file sizes than earlier ones, with some of my earlier ones as small as 512k but my more recent ones as you noticed are 4Mbs large. I have a 3090 GPU so haven't noticed a difference in fps, and I hope no one else is, either. In my more recent ones I've left the alpha channel in, though Storebror's originals are only 1.3Mb. I have not been saving with mip maps cause I frankly don't quite know what those are. ?

Ah well, as is probably evident, I'm just an amateur hobbyist with PhotoShop, so perhaps there are methods to reduce the file sizes that I am not using. I have been merging layers instead of flattening the images, which may be the culprit. I pretty much make these for myself since Storebror stopped creating them himself, and I then share them for others to improve, if they like. I always test that each new one works in game for me before sharing, since otherwise how would I know they are ready to be used? ?

My 3060 doesn't really notice either, but I guess as long as the file pixel size is correct, it will render.

@Charlo-VRIt is literally because you're saving them with MipMaps enabled which of course isn't needed because you never 'see' them from a distance. Whichever dds plugin you're using, just disable mipmaps in the 'Save' dialogue. I just re-saved the Gotha one and it's now 1.00mb. Trust me, I'm a doctor!!

Thanks, Doc!  I'm using the Intel Texture Works v 1.0.4 plugin and I've been saving with no mip maps (I had suspected what you described about them). Thus, it isn't mip maps that is ballooning the sizes of my .dds files. I've also been saving them with no compression, which is probably the likely cause.

Of the available compression schemes, which do you recommend (that also saves the alpha channel)?

I opened the dds file in GIMP, exported and overwrote the original, chose the same compression used for skins, worked like a charm, file now around 1MB

Thanks for the helpful advice!  I used the above suggestions to re-save my pilots notes for the last four planes I created them (P51B5, Ju88C6, GothaG5, and HandleyPage400), and now all are at 1Mb each in file size.  I'll add a note to my work flow to save them with that BC3 8bpp (Linear) compression from now on. ?

Because I used Dropbox to share my pilots notes for those four planes earlier in this thread, anyone who clicks those Dropbox links for them will download the latest, smaller file sized versions.

Will you be adding the planes for Normandy?

I.e. P-47D-22; P-51B-5 for both the (-3 and -7 engines and 100 and 150 Octane fuel)etc.
