Resource loading of Reverb vs Rift CV1: CPU or GPU heavy?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Does anyone know if the Reverb has higher CPU demands than the Occulus Rift CV1? My current machine is fully CPU bound at the moment, with my GPU only running at about 60% load.

While I plan on rebuilding it in the next few months, I'm wondering if it would be possible to upgrade to something like the HP Reverb now without losing more frame rates?

Thank you,

Hard to say. Are you getting 90 FPS currently? Or 45 with ASW? With your current CV1, are you using OpenComposite to bypass SteamVR? If not, that will get you a little extra performance right there.

For Reverb, the problem is that you're going to be running IL2, SteamVR and WMR. Depending on how all those perform together, it might require more (or less) CPU than the Rift CV1 runtimes. I don't think it would be a dramatic step back if you got the Reverb, but it's hard to say.

@AlonzoCurrently averaging around 27 fps, but I am not using Open composite. Can that be used in conjunction with WMR, or does the WMR to SteamVR to IL-2 interface only work through SteamVR?

I am planning on upgrading the main body of the system soon,  but for unrelated reasons do not want to take down my Windows drive for another couple of months. Since I've already got a 1080 Ti in the box, I'm thinking with a current generation CPU, I should be able to get 45 minimums, but was wondering if, given the spare GPU power Iv'e got, if I could upgrade to the Reverb early and get some extra visual quality while the rest of the build was pending.

Thank you,

Hey!, 27fps is really quite low. Do you have 27fps with the 1080Ti?

How you can play at 27fps? What graphics settings are you using? What SuperSampling?

I think your CPU is 4770K, but at what frequency? What RAM speed?

Regarding the REverb, you will need to install the Steam app called "WMR for SteamVR":  https://store.steampowered.com/app/719950/Windows_Mixed_Reality_for_SteamVR/

OpenComposite as far as I know doesn´t talk to WMR: https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/53684-quick-tips-needed-for-wmrreverb/

A 1080Ti is quite capable for the Reverb. In addition to that, the WMR ASW-like technique (called Motion Reprojection) is working quite well in the Reverb as I could test myself.

@chiliwili69That's what I got from the MSI AB test, so it may be off. I'm one of those people who just don't get motion sick so that aspect of low frame rates doesn't impact me. I've also got rather low reaction speeds in general, so I imagine I don't pick up on that issue either. Also, 27 was the average with 1% low being 24, so it was not dropping below film speeds.

Honestly, my biggest problem is spotting, which is why I was thinking of upgrading to a Reverb early, provided I could keep the frame rates from dropping below 24ish. Even at that case I could probably doing pilotage and aerobatics practice while the rest of the rebuild was pending. I still need to get a clean Lazy-8.

It is a 4770k and was holding a 4.2ghz boost during the run. I'll have to check the settings, but I did have 8 bombers and 8 fighters going at it with the visibility settings set to longest range.

It is a GTX 1080 Ti Fe, and it was only reporting at about 60% loaded. It could clearly handle more than my CPU could throw at it.

I'll check the rest of the settings when I get on tonight. It's also possible there are some other issues that are snapping frames; my computer has been getting more than a bit sketchy lately (hence the pending rebuild...)

OpenComposite only works with Oculus Rift, and honestly it’s a nice boost but not really a night/day difference. It might be worth upgrading your CPU first and then deciding if you need a new headset. Spotting is aided by detecting movement of objects—at 27 FPS your spotting ability is going to be severely impacted, I’d say.

Also 4770k—can you overclock that a little? It should be capable of better than 4.2ghz. With IL2 there’s this weird CPU scaling where every 100hz really really helps a lot, up to the point you can hit 90fps.

Also consider dropping your settings to Balanced, as this will help the CPU a lot.

@Alonzo It probably could, though haven't tried it yet. There are some other problems with my computer at the moment. Main thing is, it doesn't want to boot if it gets powered off... It comes up fine from sleep mode, but power cycles are super sketchy.

Once I can afford to have to reinstall everything, I'm actually planning on pulling the boot drive and doing a deep scan of it on another computer, just to make sure it's not that the drive itself is bad. I think it's a timing issue between the Z87 motherboard and SSD main drives or a straight up fault in the MB (computer is 6+ years old now) and CPUs have improved enough that its seriously tempting. Depends on what the check find; its possible its just a corruption in the boot sector and a fresh windows install and a good overclock later and I'm good to go for another year or so.

So current settings are 1920x1200

UI Scale 100%

Shadows Quality Medium

Mirrors: Simple

Distant Landscape Detail Normal

Horizon Render Distance 150km

Landscape Filter Off

Grass Quality Normal

Clouds Quality High

Dynamic Resolution Factor: Full

Antiailiasing 2

Gamma Correction 1

SSAO: Checked

HDR: Checked

Sharpen: Checked

Distant Buildings: Checked

Tried a run with just fighters and discovered that running the game in full screen prevents me from from getting FPS results. I'll have to try again tomorrow.

Flow-up: Still not able to get frame rates to report in the logs anymore. Not sure what's gone wrong, however now I seem to be getting in the 45 fps range now so it's possible that my low frame rates were caused by the logging program rather than real numbers. With that, I think I'm comfortable with moving forward on the reverb and the AMD based build and seeing where it ends up. I may end up seeing if I can OC my 1080 TI afterwards, depending on how everything performs.
