1CGS LukeFF Posted July 1, 2023 1CGS Posted July 1, 2023 Alright, time to dust off the round-the-world tour and get going again: Nome (PAOM) to Mcgrath Airport (PAMC). Distance flown: 297 NM. Real-time weather, traffic, and time of day: With trucks and forklifts zipping like mad around us, we performed our preflight checks and prepared to take off to the southeast, late in the day: With the sun to our backs, we left Nome behind and headed for Norton Sound, an inlet of the Bering Sea: Out over the water we went, and before long we were crossing over mountains to the west of the Yukon River: Once we passed the Yukon River it was a relatively short distance to McGrath, a key waypoint on the Iditarod race. All along the route, the weather remained pretty mild, though with it being near 0 degrees Celsius we needed to keep the heater on during the flight. At these latitudes, even though it was after 2300 local time, the sun was very slow to budge below the horizon, so we were afforded some extraordinary views as we made our approach into PAMC: The sun was just finally starting to dip all the way below the horizon as we came in to land just after midnight. With the plane secured and our heavy jackets on, we headed into the tiny neighboring village to find a warm place to stay for the night: 5 2

CUJO_1970 Posted July 1, 2023 Posted July 1, 2023 How they can do something like that for $9.99 after releasing a free Ford Trimotor is amazing.
Lusekofte Posted July 2, 2023 Posted July 2, 2023 I am a big fan of DC 6 but having odd problems with it. If I get those sorted I probably pass on this. I do like what I see, but time just won’t allowe for me to properly dedicate myself to fly both.
Mtnbiker1998 Posted July 6, 2023 Posted July 6, 2023 Learned about OVRtoolkit's desktop functions and decided to pick it up and give it a try. Doesn't require the use of VR controllers (I don't use them when flying) and $11 seems like a decent deal for in-flight movies! Just need to add some commands to the Voiceattack profile and it should be pretty intuitive to use. Looking forward to seeing what other functions it has! Any other fans of The Expanse in here? Been rewatching it.. Again... Might have to go through the books again too at this rate.

1CGS LukeFF Posted July 8, 2023 1CGS Posted July 8, 2023 And the Alaskan tour continues: Mcgrath Airport (PAMC) to Valdez Airport (PAVD). Distance flown: 324 NM. Travel time: 1 hour 56 minutes. Real-time weather, time of day, and traffic. Starting out once again late in the day, the weather radar showed we could expect some precipitation on our route east of PAMC, but by around our first waypoint, it was expected to clear up. And that's pretty much what happened: after taking off and turning our way around to the east, the weather turned ugly, so we changed our flight plan to IFR and, finally, we came out more or less above the clouds at about 11,000 feet. Once we came out of the clouds just west of the Skwentna River we were treated to a beautiful sight: Pretty soon we were over the approach path for Anchorage, and so the radio traffic picked up considerably. At Big Lake, which is due north of Elmendorf Air Force Base, we made our turn to the east over the spectacular mountains of Chugach National Forest: With the light fading fast, we dropped down into the approach path that took us just south of Valdez. With a slight tailwind we probably should have landed via visual approach to the west, but with high mountains to the east of the runway and the fading light I didn't want to take any chances. As it is, we made it down without any problems. I have to say, I was wondering how it was going to go flying in real-time in this part of the journey, but so far the views have not been disappointing in the least. ?? 2

1CGS LukeFF Posted July 9, 2023 1CGS Posted July 9, 2023 On we go into the Alaskan darkness: Valdez Airport (PAVD) to Yakutat (PAYA). Distance flown: 319 NM. Travel time: 1 hour, 54 minutes. Real-time weather, traffic, and time of day. We set off once again late in the day, but this time the skies were clear. Plane fueled and checks made, we set off. The vacuum pump and one of the engines are showing signs of wear, but they should hold out until I can perform some needed maintenance. Our route this evening took us out over the water before swinging around to follow the coastline more or less. For a while, while the sunlight held out, we were again afforded some beautiful views. Eventually, though, it got dark quickly - really, really dark. Up here, with so much unpopulated terrain, there's not much to see at all once the sun goes down. We shot the RNAV approach without problems, as the wind was pretty much head-on. PAYA is an Alaska Airlines destination and a popular destination for outdoorsmen, so the airport is pretty well-equipped. After securing the plane we made our way to the lodge and checked into a room for the night and the next few days. 4

I still would return to the mi8 in DCS for that personality sort of fix although the beaver isn’t bad at all. Never found anything that compares to the hip. 1

I bought the md 500 in msfs because a chopper pilot said it was good. Compared to MI 8 it is not. But it might be the sim itself not ready for choppers. Closest to the MI 8 is the Hind and Huey. Both too good to ignore. What I really like about msfs is flying in places I recognise. I see no point in glas pit ap flying for longer periods. Edited July 9, 2023 by Lusekofte

I found myself enjoying the ap simply to take in the views. Looking back now I’m on a hiatus it was almost visual asmr. I could sit for hours passively watching the world go by. The flights over north west Africa were simming highlights in over 25 years of doing it. When I got msfs I was totally convinced I’d be flying light bush beaters through ravines and along rivers but that novelty soon gave way to just enjoying the view from on high. The hip is a different proposition simply because of its challenges to fly well and smoothly. Here I could circle round a tiny landing mark in the Caucasus for hours, ignoring everything else, trying to pull off something akin to a competent touch down. horses for courses I guess. Happy to have both. 1
Lusekofte Posted July 9, 2023 Posted July 9, 2023 (edited) Well I probably would enjoy the same thing as you if I had time enough. Now I am not near the sim rig more than once a month. And I cannot afford long hauls. It take too much time away from family when I am home. I run down to the rig and make two short flights and that is it. I am writing this from a hotel room 1800 km from home aborting two third of my vacation because something came up. Edited July 9, 2023 by Lusekofte

1CGS LukeFF Posted July 12, 2023 1CGS Posted July 12, 2023 Service Pack 2 for the 310R dropped yesterday. ?? In other news, I was reading this today about the A2A Comanche: https://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=74561&start=75#p565893 Quote We don't use the MSFS sound system, Accu-Sim has it's own sound system directly connected to the physics. Every sound is triggered by a physical event with per frame accuracy, there is no delay. You are mistaking a cockpit rattle that happened from compression kickback. It's like punching something, the energy goes into the thing you hit then it dissipates it by way of a rattle. This is how it happens in the real Comanche. All sounds don't immediately stop once the prop stops. It's when the energy stops and is then dissipated. So it's a feature, not a bug ? 1 2
ZachariasX Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 I swear Scott releses the Commanche when I am away from my sim rig on vacation… 1
BOO Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Though i cant play the game at the moment Im seriously thinking about continuing to drop the dosh simply to keep up so the hit isnt huge when i do get back!. All this good stuff aint cheap! Not sure im stoked enough by the F28 to purchase but I may seize on the DC6 just so i can look at in the hangar and dribble. Never paid much attention to 50s airliners but its surely one of the most beautiful aircraft ever made. I think ive read and heard enough of the Comanche to get that on relese too just to see what all the A2A fuss is about. My dream remains a decent Helo FM and a study level Mi8 however.
1CGS LukeFF Posted July 13, 2023 1CGS Posted July 13, 2023 Quick flight tonight to check out the changes in the 310: a VOR nav flight from Big Bear (the airport is just up the road from where I ski in the winter) to Lake Havasu to return a rental plane. There is still some funky stuff going on with the radios, but overall I think it's a good update. Nice to see the plane accumulate dirt and grime now: 4 1
Bremspropeller Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 (edited) After flying the Mk1000 yesterday, I jumped into a Mk3000 today. It has the same original fuselage length, matched with an increased span wing for better runway performance at higher weights. Perfect for inner-Australia service. We're going to do some more island-hopping today on our way from Tahiti to OZ. Thundering morning-departure. Those two Spey Junior will make sure everybody on the lagoon is awake by the time the gear is up. So long, Aitutaki, so long Cook Islands! The first outskirts of American Samoa are coming up. Pago-Pago marks our top of descent. Downwind of Faleolo Intl Airport, Western Samoa. Robert Louis Stevenson is layed to rest on this 'Treasure Island'. On final, slightly high. Lift-Dumpers out. The F28 has no reverse thrust. In the backdrop, a shower is engulfing the capital town, Apia. Enough for today, time to hit the pool and for having a cold one. Savaii in the background is enshrouded by heavy showers. Edited July 13, 2023 by Bremspropeller 5

ZachariasX Posted July 15, 2023 Posted July 15, 2023 20 hours ago, AnPetrovich said: a pretty interesting review: I especially love the internal sound. It really comes close how I perceived it in much less loud Merlin. What struck me, especially in a well sealed environment as the Mustang is, you mainly hear the beat of the cylinders, just going RRRRR at the frequency of your rpm, while upping rpm also increases the volume. There is no humming or howing sound. Not at all like you get in a big block car with a fancy exhaust system. This one: I find has a somewhat misleading internal sound, as there is tons of clipping as it is so loud inside. It makes it sound much more "metal-like" and too high pitched. This one comes shockingly close to how I perceived the sound in the Mustang cockpit: It is of note that even up to 400+ mph there is hardly any audible wind noise at all in the Mustang. The Biggin Hill dual seat Spitfires have more of an "open cockpit" sound in the back, as there are finger thick gaps between canopy and fuselage. And there you hear much more noises besides the engine. But the Mustang is a flush fit. The outside sound of the Flying Iron 109 I find a bit "too nice", because that brute is so loud when you are standing next to it, I think my ears had some sound clipping. There's more humming and less screaming, but maybe that is a sensible way to model the sound. It's surely beautiful work! 15 hours ago, Bremspropeller said: JAX and Craig were my old PPL/IR stomping grounds ? I am soon off for my vacation and I cannot buy anything. So I hope when I am back I am a bit restrained on those offerings... But man, we have come a long way! 2
1CGS LukeFF Posted July 15, 2023 1CGS Posted July 15, 2023 Yakutat (PAYA) to Klawock (PAKW): Distance flown: 354 NM; travel time: 2 hours, 4 minutes. Realtime weather and traffic. Time of day adjusted for more daylight (well, that was the plan ?). Calm winds and nice weather as we set out later in the day but not as late as before, as the plan was to get into PAKW before sundown. The approach plate mentioned it was not meant to be used at night and that there was high terrain all around the airport. Oh, and the final approach was offset by about 16 degrees. Sounds like fun! Heading up and out of PAYA was a cinch, and we were on our way south, hugging the Alaskan coast: It does without saying that flying in this part of the world makes it impossible to not take good screenshots and this stretch of the world tour was no different. Also, with the latest update to the 310R, the plane now progressively shows more dirt and grime both inside and outside the plane. By the end of the flight, we had a fair amount of dirt on the airframe and random bits of trash in the cockpit, including empty plastic bottles. ? Despite my efforts, the sun was soon slipping below the horizon, and so we made the final approach into PAKW in the dark. With the darkness and my lack of familiarity with this airport, I had to swing the plane around to line up with the runway, where I made a very mediocre landing off to one side. But, safely down we made it. ? Our next stop will be back in Canada, which means we will need to be at our destination airport well before Customs closes at 1630. So, we're going to have to be more prompt on this next leg. ? 5
