P-51...

The advantage to the Spit V is that it doesn't have a tremendous amount of power, so like the P-40, you have to be conservative with it..however unlike the P-40 it's engine is very robust and it's much lighter and more nimble, plus your ammo load is considerably diminished.

It definitely recovers its energy a lot better than the P40 though. So unlike the P40, when you find yourself low and slow, you still have some options. :)

Did you know that George Washington was once an Englishman?

Anyway.....as far as this thread goes,  all these lovely,  irrelevant people had one thing in common;

thats right, none of them flew the P51?

Although I'm very, very pleased we're getting a P51,  as a VR user I'm kinda regretting that we don't get the 'B' or 'C' with the hinged canopy:)

Interesting how huge that F22 Raptor is. F15 Eagle is comparable in size. A F16 is tiny in comparision.

Apologies for the shakes.  Such was the press of the crowd I had to hold the camera over my head.

The previous night's extended curry house hit with the lads probably didn't help either:o:

The difference in length between the F-22 Raptor and B-17 bomber is 3m, and the Raptor weighs more both empty and loaded.

P-51s always look as though they are 6 months pregnant anyway, so those invasion markings are a fashion error. Hoops are not slimming!

Good pictures, though.

Its not at all analogous but I giggled at the idea of a B17 doing BFM against an F16

They should lay off the 150 octane.

As CO of the 352ndFG, it was nice to see those blue-nosed 51's flying with other planes. My group can't wait to get our hands on the Mustang and start making our personal skins duplicating those we have been using for 15+ years in IL2 46. Blue skies, gents.

Salutations,

I just watched a program about the P-51. Little did I know that the design of the Mustangs bottom radiator scoops design actually provides the craft with some thrust. Amazing.

Unfortunately, this same bottom radiator scoop was a weak point when the plane is doing low level ground attacks. If it was damaged the engine would overheat and shortly force the plane down.

It's called the Meredith Effect, it wasn't really unique to the Mustang, but the Mustang did perhaps take the most advantage of it.

Seeing those droptank pictures makes me really want that feature.

It's not so much the additional amount of fuel as it is the action of dropping them when getting ready for imminent combat. Also managing the fuel tanks will add an additional layer of immersion.

I know the devs have some simple fuel management on the roadmap for IL2 (possibly including droptanks), so I'm just going to patiently wait for that.

If the MP maps were about 75% bigger it'd be a genuine need..maybe some day

What I find interesting is the difference in pilot position in the photo back then compared to today. Or am I seeing things which are not there?
