Night sorties in career mode

wait. You guys are getting night sorties? I'm currently doing a BF-110 run in the Kuban campaign and got 0 night sorties. Is it because I started the campaign before night sorties were added in the game? I need to start a new career?

Night sorties haven't been added for Bf 110s yet.

@danielprates Thanks for posting all of that.  That was new information for me.

The radio navigation tools were also pretty neat. Lancasters used the GEE and the OBOE systems, also explained very well here....

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gee_(navigation)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oboe_(navigation)

... wheras the germans used against England variations of the LORENZ equipment, you know, the blind landing equipment we know well cause we already had in il21946 and that is also modeled here in BoS. It was used extensivelly by the luftwaffe in the night blitz that followed the battle of britain.

They all operated under the same basic idea. Two different radio beams can be directed to intercept eachother over a specific location. If the equipment could home in to both, well then you have yourself a dead on position reckoning even above zero visibility. As I said before it wasn't perfect, bur for ravaging somethig large as a city it was certainly good enough.

Since this was all high-tech stuff, secret as hell, it didn't make the news back then. But the effort to jam those signals and develop better equipment by both sides is collectivelly known as the BATTLE OF THE BEAMS, an interesring and little known chapter of ww2.

One can easily see why this doesn't fit in the simulation scope of BoX. A dedicated night bombing sim however simply couldn't do without it.

Pardon my ignorance, but which planes have night sorties in the game right now? I have 4-5 different careers going on but no night sorties.

All of the bombers have night missions right now. Some Ju 52 missions will also take place in the early morning hours.

just reread the entire thread, do the devs know about this? Seems to me like career mode is off limit for certain planes due to night missions being unfun and unfair.

Also, glad I entertained someone with my questions? Reading Sublime's gave me the impression G2 units in Kuban had night missions, guess he just said that without actually testing it.

I ran it up to the point of generating a mission that started at dusk and that seemed to be too dark to do much in.  That and given the units name specifically has a nacht at the start of it would lead me to believe.. -shrug-

yeah, I get what you mean, but the unit existed in career mode before night missions were added, and it seems that the G2 unit don't do night missions yet. My current career with that unit has been day missions only.

Have you tried PWGC? the creator says theyre definitely in that and IMO its better than career mode.

Personally I like the night missions that you get for the bombers. I play in VR - flying through the dark and then having them search lights coming up looking for you is quite an impressive sight.

But I'm also a bit puzzled why the Me110-G2 doesn't have any night sorties. After all, the unit is called "Nachjagd", so they should be employed mainly during the night.

I feel like career mode still needs some tweaking. Hopefully, night missions are a top priority considering they're the more common type of mission for certain planes. Giving the G2 night sorties would just make sense as well.

@Gretsch_Man have you tried Night Fighters over the Kuban by Juri_JS? Very enjoyable.

Thanks busdriver, I'll try that one out. :good:

I totally agree that the career mode has a lot of potential for improvements, but imho it's much better already than it used to be with older IL-2 games.

With all the current developments going on, let's just hope the devs don't loose sight of it.

So does it seem appropriate that JU 87's would be flying night ops in the current available careers?

It's possible, but I'm not sure if they flew such missions at Stalingrad. Later in the war, yes, for sure.

EDIT: I just found this comment from here:

Quote

August 23rd was the official start of the battle... "Six hundred attack aircraft from Fliegerkorps VIII, mainly Ju87 Stuka dive-bombers, were active over the city that night, bombing indiscriminately over a wide area. Some specially-designated targets were knocked out, including the water works and the telephone exchange. The power station was also hit and would eventually be destroyed."

So, I would say that yes, it is accurate to have nighttime Ju 87 missions for this time period.

Just FYI if anybody comes across this in the future and doesn't want to play night missions, before hitting "progress to next day", exit the game and backup your cp.db file in the career folder. Launch the game and advance to the next day. If you get a mission you don't like, quit the game and replace your cp.db with the one you just backed up and you'll have another chance to generate the next days mission.
