Does anyone here use a gaming laptop for sim? I am thinking about upgrading my computer , however I will be downsizing to flat next year so wonder if its a good option? I would hook it up to monitor and periferals when gaming but my sim time is the minority of use and controllers would be stowed away when not in use.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated, I only really play il2 and box and some driving Sims, I'd like to play forza 4 at high settings.

Hey Delta, the answer really depends on whether you play on a monitor or use a VR headset. I run a Dell G5 gaming laptop (detailed specs in my signature), which was able to run BoX on a monitor with pretty much all settings maxed-out. If you plan on using a monitor then I would say a good gaming laptop would probably serve you well.

That said, I got a Lenovo Explorer (Windows Mixed Reality) VR headset for Christmas and now there's no going back to flat screens ?. VR is obviously a lot more demanding on your system, and I have only been able to run BoX with moderate graphics settings, and even with that framerates are sometimes an issue. It's totally worth it for the immersion though! knowing what I know now about VR requirements, if planning to fly in VR I would buy or build a higher-powered desktop gaming machine.

Hope this helps!

Although you can comfortably play Il-2 on a laptop, I would suggest a desktop unless you absolutely need the portability. Laptops generally provide less performance than desktops at the same price. Furthermore, they often suffer from limited upgradability, noisy cooling, and insufficient I/O.

As you plan to dock at a monitor, I don't think it makes sense to use a laptop. If space is a major concern, desktops with smaller form factors are a possible solution.

If you do choose a laptop, make sure to read some reviews before buying. The specs never tell the whole story; performance, quality, and aesthetics can vary considerably between seemingly equivalent models.

I'm curious about your laptop specs, but how do I view them?

Several times when I've tried to look at details in various members' "signature", I've been unable to find them. I thought I'd just need to look in their profile, but no such details listed there.

I was recently window shopping for a gaming setup, and almost bought an Acer Helios 500. It was so expensive though, that I decided on a desktop instead. Of course, I went on to spend a whole lot more, but made the right choice I'm sure.

I use an asus ROG laptop for all my games, in IL-2 I get 60-140 fps online, single player gives lower frames and an occasional stutter, but still playable. This is on ultra graphics settings.  Intel® Core™ i7 7820HK Processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 , with 8GB GDDR5 VRAM

I can imagine a simpit set up in your truck's sleeping compartment!

I was considering getting an Asus Rog, among others. Performance sounds impressive.

Do you use flight controls, or keyboard/mouse?

Edit: Just saw your post in 'Let's see your pets', which answered my question. Filbert posing with your Saitek X-55 HOTAS.

He must be good company on long hauls.

@dd_delta7 I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 gaming laptop and it can run Il-2 just fine at 60FPS on mostly high graphics with only the occasional stutter.

I do play Forza7 sometimes and it has a little harder of a time handling that.

(Edit: Apology to dd_delta7 for hijacking thread, but) I've got to ask. When did you order?

Back in early Feb, when I prepaid to confirm my order, I was no. 6 on the queue according to Ismo.

He estimated end of April before he could get around to my order. End of April is fast approaching, and my anticipation is building.

He did say, that as his is a one man operation, any unforeseen circumstances such as vacation, family issues etc could cause delay.

I'll wait till May 1st before I start bugging him, but I'm interested to know whether your order came in on schedule.

@jaygee485I was 8th in line last September and he shipped in January. Probably best just to wait, he will contact you when he gets to your console, and keep you updated on the progress.

Thanks for that.

I heard from Ismo today, and he says that he'll start building mine next week, aiming to ship it in the 2nd week of May, so he's right on schedule.

I'm feeling very happy.
