Night fighters over the Kuban - Bf-110 G2 campaign

The game also has a skin of Joseph Kociok's Bf-110. He was the most successful pilot of 10.(NJ)/ZG 1 and some of the campaign missions are based on sorties he flew.

Ok, thank you

Yes, please

Check for NJG when selecting a skin inside BoS, these are the nightfighters like the one that's piloted by Johnen, Heget and Lent.

Ok, thanks.

Honestly, I found out by myself but I was thinking about a black style paintwork.

My bad

The use of black nightfighter camo was abandoned after 1942, when it was discovered that it made the aircraft too visible on moonlit nights and against clouds.

Makes sense as we avoid black uniforms since a while now for night missions.

Hi all!

How do you fire the flare without ripping the cannopy out? When I press the open window command nothig happens and if I open cannopy it flies off... Amazing job that campaign!

You don't have to open the canopy to fire a flare.

I think the flares were fired by the radio operator. You only select the color of the flare, you want to fire and shoot the flare pistol.

Like @Yogiflight posted, you don't. Here are the flare gun ports.

I wanted to add my thanks for this campaign too.

I'd just finished reading Hajo Hermann's "Eagle's Wings" so night fighting was very much at the front of my mind. Add to the fact that, despite nearly 40 years with flight sims, I've never done much night flying (At least without FLIR or NVG) and spent very little time with the 110. All told, that's made this campaign a treat on several levels.

I've still got the last mission to do but overall found it challenging but fair. Had some tough times with the Night Witches who seem to have some very good tail gunners. Only mission where I blew it (though still passed) was mission 9 where I was patrolling far too low and, in an effort to gain height, burnt out an engine. Nobody to blame but myself and a valuable learning experience.

Thanks again and I'll be watching out for more of your work

Quick question @Juri_JS

Are the camera views locked on this campaign?  I was trying to edit together some videos from my missions but I'm not able to flip between the different views.

Views for ground units and AI aircraft are locked. This happens automatically when the mission editor option to disable object icons is used by the mission designer. Views for the player aircraft should work.

I'm surprised it carries over into the flight recordings.  Not having those exterior views of enemy aircraft is a downer when trying to edit together a video.  Especially so as this has been my favorite campaign by far and it feels like my videos don't do it justice.  :(

You can edit the missions if you want to make a video.

Here's what you have to do before you record a track:

1. Open a mission from the campaign in the mission editor.

2. Select one or more AI aircraft.

3. In the "Name" section of the "Plane Properties" menu delete the text "NOICON".

4. Save the mission.

Afterwards the camera views should work for the planes you have edited.

Outstanding!  Being able to track the aircraft was the problem, I was able to use the free cam to line up shots for ground objects.

Are you just using the map icons to simulate radar?

No, 10.(NJ)/ZG 1 did not have radar. The unit cooperated with searchlight batteries.

This is an interesting campaign; in career mode, you can fly a "night fighter" Bf110 squadron (BOK), but actually you only fly... Day missions !!! And 3 times out of four you end up going after 8 A20s escorted by 3 Yaks. It becomes a bit boring after a while. That's why I ultimately stopped playing this career after 15 missions or so.

Only did one mission of this campaign so far, but I'm curious to see what's next. Good work.

@Juri_JSJust finished the campaign, and man was it amazing. As a night fighter fanatic I truly enjoyed Night Fighter Over the Kuban. I only play multiplayer as single player is too boring for me, but this campaign was the only mission/campaign that I've truly enjoyed. I was wondering, as I am an 99% allied player, and with Normandy coming, do you plan on making a Mosquito Campaign. I know you've talked about one for the Me410, but what about the Mosquito?

No Mosquito campaign from me unless we get a Norway map.

I’ve got you covered.

Juri - this campaign is on my short list when I get back to flying once again.

Wow, just finished third mission and I haven't been this immersed in games for a long time! Stalking enemy bombers in darkness and waiting for the searchlights to light up, definitely scratched that night fighter itch I had. I hope some day we'll get proper radars implemented to the game. Such tools could bring much variety to the missions.

I am proud to present the first night fighter campaign for Il-2 Sturmovik Great Battles. In 10 missions you can fly the Bf-110G2 as pilot of 10.(NJ)/ZG1 during April to June 1943.

Thanks for the campaign! A delightful experience.? And also thanks for the idea that you can play with the 0.8 gamma. So much more like night.

What a fantastic campaign. Thanks for making this.

My favorite parts:

* The first mission. It was my first time flying at night, and I didn't know what to expect. It was cool having the other 110 around, but not knowing where until he opened fire (sometimes on my target!). It's just a simple bomber intercept mission, but the format works well.

* The Intruder mission was awesome. After all those intercept missions, I liked having the script flipped. And I was totally taken by surprise by:

Spoiler

The spotlights as I crossed over the front-line, and by the Yak just after shooting down 3 of the bombers.

* The final mission, protecting the truck convoy. Hunting U2's at treetop height without the aid of searchlights was challenging and super intense.

I wonder, what the opinion is on the missions against U-2s? Are they too easy to shot down?

The Night Witches mission, yes, I thought so. When they come in at altitude and are coned by the searchlights, they're very easy targets. Just make a wide circle to attack them from 12 or 6 o'clock, and they crumple before they can fire back. They're so slow there is little risk of them reaching the target before you can line up and shoot them. I think I destroyed seven or eight in this way.

The last mission, though, was much harder. Some of them got caught on searchlights, but those in the dark at low altitude were challenging.

Sorry please ignore, I restarted by PC and it worked. thanks for the work!

Hi Juri,

the campaign seems amazing, but I cannot manage to install it. Following your link and installation path creates a campaign but no missions in them. I have bought all four campaign packs...

maybe I am doing something wrong? can you help  ?

Mission 3 and I just flew into the water at high speed as I lost spatial awareness in a darkened tight turn to become fish food.  Brilliant stuff!!

Is it just me or do the spotlights not work since most recent update?

Searchlights still work, but the beams have become almost invisible. :(

I will report this to the devs.

After installing update 4.702c, the searchlight beams should be visible again.
