[Solved] Gimp: How to "Flatten Image"

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hey guys!

I am totally new to skinning, after @szelljr suggestion, I started to look into it to make a Junkers 52 skin!

I wanted to flatten image, but Gimp is not allowing me .

Anyone has an idea? thanks for your help!

For exportin you need to merge really.

Pick your bottom layer (doesn't matter if its active) in the layers menu, right click, select Merge, select the option that clips to bottom layer.

Once merged you add the alpha by selecting the bottom layer, right clicking and selecting "Add layer mask" then picking the channels option and the chosen alpha.

You need a DDS plug in for gimp to export but a google search will see you right.

The latest gimp is quite slow. 2.8 is faster and probably better supported in terms of plug ins.

IMPORTANT - forgetting to undo the merge and the adding of the layer mask after an export then hitting Save (or having auto save operate) may see your work forever compressed into a single layer! Once ive gotten to where I want I always save, then create a new temporary template from which I export - Ive lost too much work by such silly mistakes.

Have a look in the skinning section For 5Tukas and Vonpilsners gimp and alpha guides.

BTW - I have a layer that names all the actuators on the 52s wings  to help with the camo if you want it.

@szelljr @BOO

Thank you! I helped me a lot.

In fact I just had to click in any layer to make "flatten image" visible!

I am so happy with my first skin, thanks to @6./ZG26_5tuka fantastic 4k template!

However, I lost the sunlight reflexion. Any idea on how to enable it?

Thank you guys

The 'reflection is all down (mostly) to the Alpha layer. If it's dark=Low reflection and light=Higher reflection. Usually you can get away with it by just adjusting the Base Layer (the first one) in the Alpha files. Start with 50% grey and work either way from that until you're satisfied... Any problems then just come back. Personally I use Photoshop but there are loads who also use GIMP as well so you'll have no problems.

Good luck!
