Some info about the map here.

Maybe you already know..?

The goal of 2023 is to have the central area of the map, the Karelian sthmus and the bottom of the Gulf of Finland, completed and tested by the Virtual Pilots multiplayer server with the gaming house. The flying area of the Karelian Sithmus map is 280km x 210km. Outside of this delimitation, there is fairly ready-made terrain 70 km north, east and south. We will finish that area in 2024 when the first version is ready for publication. After that, the size of the map is about 410km x 410km and the area to be flown is about 350km x 350km.

@ those working on this project;

I've build a tool a while ago for private use, and that I think could be useful to you. It can:

   - automatically place building objects on village textures as defined in the Surface.dat files (so you only have to place the textures; my tool will place the 3d objects),

   - convert roads to and from either group files or .dat surfaces so you can edit roads and railways inside the Mission Editor,

   - merge several .dat files into a single one while keeping textures intact.

If you're interested, just send me a PM and I'll share it with you guys :)

Tämä on todella hyvä uutinen.

I'm really looking forward to flying around mypartners home town of Kotka.

Plus, of course, learning more about the seperate wars in the area as part of the wider Second World War.

How I have been missing this discussion:blush:. Great news guys!!!:yahoo:

I notice a lot of the cyrillic transliterations of the Finnish names are very wonky, some being weird translations, others following English pronunciation, for example "Ylämaa" has been transliterated into "Хайленд", which is literally the English word "Highland" in cyrillic. Likewise the letter J has been transliterated in all Finnish names into "дж", which is the English J sound, such as in the name Jason (transliterated into cyrillic as "Джейсон"). I'd recommend checking the appropriate Russian/cyrillic versions on something like Yandex maps set to Russian language (Russian Google maps only transliterates major cities and thus doesn't provide much help) :salute:.

You can see this issue quite clearly here comparing the Karelia map to the same area on Yandex:

I removed the Karelia map page from the ler3 server because it was forgotten to appear there for completely different purposes than the "official" publication of the project.

Despite everything, the map is indeed a work in progress and progressing well, but we can't promise a release date yet because we are doing it completely voluntarily in our spare time. We still have a lot of work to do when we model historical buildings and build cities and airports. So slow down... :)

@AEthelraedUnraed

We are interested in your tools and I tried to send you a private message. For some reason this IL-2 Forum won't let me send you a PM. Can you please try sending me a message.

It seems my inbox was full and as a result I couldn't receive any more messages . I cleaned it up a bit so now I should be able to receive PMs again.

@LLv44_Kanttori I tried to PM you but now it says *you* cannot receive more messages... Is your inbox full as well perhaps? :P

S! Great Work on this Finland / Russia Map to all of you guys...
Quick question, what is the process (or applications) to create a map like this one, for IL2 Sturmovik?

I was thinking of maybe creating a small map about the Austrian vs Italian Alps... of the WW1 era.

Thanks for any follow-up on my question.

Cheers,
GenMarkof

Well you can already edit everything you need. :) The Mission Editor loads custom maps without problems.

To edit the various maps, you can use the ROF tools that you can download on that forum.

S!
Do you have the name of the ROF tools or the link?
A big thanks for the reply.

I really appreciate it!

The Official ROF Tools Package is good from the start and it's similar with the Official IL-2 Sturmovik Map Tools. Both of them contains the following applications:

Water Compres Tool (this compresses large water files and also forest files for the game engine)
Height Process Tool (this brings in the height map needed by the game engine)
Plant Generator Tool (this modifies the density and presence of tree species in forests for the game engine)

In addition to the tools mentioned above, you need the free QGIS vector application (making roads and railways with vectors), a lot of Photoshop or Gimp (free) applications (editing textures and e.g. land cover files) and - funny enough - a calculator:biggrin:

During November, I can probably tell you more about both the map work and our Karelia map. Now I can't and won't have time to write more of this, so draw your own conclusions about it, maybe something nice will happen in the very near future. ;)

Hello folks!

WE HAVE NOW OUR OWN OFFICIAL
Karelia map discussion

You can finally discuss about the Karelia map and ask questions to us Kartta Kompania mapmakers and me. I am now the Moderator of that forum and we want to concentrate all the information in one and the same place. So welcome there and we can close this thread now! :salute:
