'Harmless'' ... you wouldn't be saying that if the bloody things were dropping bombs around your position all night

Ok did not know about aa did not see in dark. Because in qmb aa shot me down attacking a train.. but Iwas close and low over the train.

I have to check that again, I might  have been wounded by own bomb

Been this way since ROF. Our night AA and searchlights are blind but not deaf and when they see weapons flashes etc. they home in working together.

Thanks I find that excellent. After this incident I find nightflying vert interesting and everytime I Get cocky AA get me. And that is how it should be. This plane is really a pleasure

Hunting witches in my wip nightfighter campaign:

Far from easy when your stall speed is higher than the maximum speed of your target.

Ssssh, don't tell them that! We're just tooling along, innocently sightseeing. Really, would a soldier fly around one of those things in WW2? Of course not! Just leave us alone! :)

Hi,
anybody got a hint about the bomb sight? Also from the rear shooter position it is relatively difficult for me to lean my TrackIR so far over to use the sight.

I have also tried to lean on the gun to lean out further.

The bombsight doesn't work. In reality it was adjustable by using the lever and then aiming with the two pins.

First of all, thank you both. ?

I've even seen the pictures before and tried to catch this view myself.
Unfortunately I was still not able to recreate it this way.  Maybe I'll have to work on my settings again.

Okay, thanks. I didn't know that. Hopefully it will be added later, it would be a shame if not.  ;)

I've been meaning to ask, are the gunners in bombers effected by darkness or are they still as capable at night?

AFAIK the gunners behave just like the AA gunners. They fire as soon as an aircraft is visible because of gunfire or searchlights.

I think he wants to know if their firing accuracy is reduced at night. (even if he doesn't I'm curious myself)

Anyone flown in dark and rain? Drops falling from top wing and on goggles if you stretch outside windshield, very cool.  I find dark night to light in this game. I enjoy night flying in with choppers DCS. It is pitch dark I can use Night vision goggles when on campaign but I like the instrument flying. Following valleys only using instrument and navigation. Only really seeing something while flying over villages.  The U2 have really revitalized GB for me, but it should be darker

Have you already changed the games gamma settings? While working on my night fighter campaign I noticed that this makes a huge difference during the night.

Looks like the bombsight might come. Digging around on the ru forum I found this

Were U2s limited to night operations only or did they ever fly during the day (seems suicidal, but asking anyway)?

I gotta saw, this whole "hard to shoot down because of low airspeed" thing is FAAAALSE :).

OK, in RL I imagine they might have been harder to spot (no way a sim can replicate the camouflage effect of ground clutter completely)... and RL Po-2s likely did not have to face pilots with the kind of combat experience the average sim pilot gets (who, of course, also aren't mortally afraid of ploughing into trees if they miss :) ).

It's a great ride though. I'm looking forward to being to fly a night campaign in career mode.

Sadly that one won't fly again unless you have really won the jackpot 'Euromillions'

Yes, you definitely should bring a screwdriver. But I doubt that it is anything that could scare an owner of a British vintage car. ;)

I was under the impression that the U2 was released as an Xmas present for us even though it wasn't quite finished yet.

You can still present it to yourself. It is one fun plane.

I'm afraid that one (along with its sister which was cut up) is beyond economical repair for flight, even for a very keen eccentric multi millionaire.. Spars are rotted among many other issues. (I did a technical inspection on it about 9 years ago)

Sadly when 'film companies" are involved with things they do not understand big maintenance problems can develop, it was not even washed after its Atlantic crossing and the salt allowed to react in every area where aluminium and steel met, and left to run rampant.

Even for seriously rich enthusiast it's only "semi rare" status makes it (very) uneconomical to consider repair for flight.. There are simply too many better options available for restoration... It's fate was sealed by incompetence/laziness 12 years or so ago

(sorry for off topic, I have seen cases like this countless times and it depresses/angers me every time)

Cheers, Dakpilot

Got airborne in the U-2 for the first time yesterday, albeit briefly.

The forward-firing machine gun is tricky to aim and I was nearly outrun by the train I was trying to bomb, but it’s such a fun flying experience.

The lack of wheel brakes nearly derailed my landing as well...

A well worthy addition, if the bombsight and a system for using the radio to spot for artillery is added then it’ll punch way above its weight, but as it is the U-2VS already adds depth to BoX and I’m glad to have it.

Learning to fly is very difficult and dangerous...?

@AeroAce: I can take off with full load and fuel. Takes a lot of runway though.

Hilarious ?

BTW, it never ceases to amaze me how detailed the damage modeling is in the RoF/BoX series...

There's a guy on Instagram who's worth checking out- rats_the_pilot - he has two jobs; captaining a380's and flying experience flight for people in two seat spitfires. He breaks up the monotony between by displaying classic warbirds (mainly out of Duxford), fixing up and racing his classic Bentley (1920s?) and shooting his SMLE. Doesn't seem a bad life does it? His posts are always interesting and he has a great sense of humour. B*****d.

The great thing I've found out about the U-2 is that I can plot a course to the target in career mode & put it on autopilot, and then I can go and feed my son his formula and not have missed anything by the time I've returned to my chair. My gracious, this thing is slow! ? But, it's so satisfying knocking out a couple of targets in the dark, all the while dodging flak and searchlights. Good times. :good:
