Game version 2.012 discussion: Hs 129, Kuban map, FM update, New shadows

well, you can see the difference on many pictures and I saw it in reallife (in planes, chopper) and what is with the "object and texture view distance" ? can you at least add this for an option to increase ? because it would be awesome to see buildings far away and not only the roads from the cities

Nothing is as easy as you think. When you draw out further you draw exponentially greater polys and textures etc. Other sims do not do things much different than us. They also use clever tricks to fool you. We'll experiment more in the future as we did with the shadows and the mirrors and all kinds of other stuff you conveniently forget about. I have only ONE programmer who works on these issues. The only thing that we do less than others is the horizon and that is changing soon and we should have the furthest in the genre if all goes to plan. So, stop whining and go fly some damn missions and leave the development to us.

The Hs 129 is so ugly. I love it! and MOUNTAINS!!! AND SHIPS!!! weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Rudder input feels so nice now. Turning off hud I get 55-60 frames on Kuban map even with my peasant fx8350.

Simply an amazing update! Flew an IL-2 against some ships, rockets were very effective. Pranged my prop on one pass and had to try a water landing. Didn't go too bad but I was floored by motion of the waves as I watched the plane sink, almost made me seasick! Lots more flying to get done today.

Wow, thankyou very much for this.  :salute:

Obviously they can't make objects render distance scalable. Otherwise people with high-end systems will be able to spot planes and vehicles from greater distances than those with older PCs.

That is a terrible reason. Rise of Flight had scalable object rendering on a slider in the launcher and I do not recall a huge fuss.  You could say the same about all sorts of graphics settings - resolution is another good example.  Where do you draw the line anyway? How far back must everyone be held so as not to disadvantage the laggards? Why, specifically, should SPlayers be limited for rather nebulous concepts of MP fairness?

I have no problem with resources and priorities driven decisions as Jason mentions. The sim is advancing by leaps and bounds and I am sure we are all very happy about that.   If BoS currently is continuing to push the limits,  Jason has it on his watch list, I am happy to leave it at that and go fly some missions. No complaints here.  But I do not like this argument that all must have the lowest common denominator.

An on-time, and wonderfully clean release of such a big update:  Flew for hours online yesterday for several hours and didn't run into any issues at all.  Great job developers and beta testers for pulling off such a game-changing upgrade so seamlessly!

finally had a chance to check this out this am

mind-boggling awesome.....

I just spent a couple hours with the updated sim.

A freaking milestone !

FM, shadows, map,... this update is a huge blast !

Posted (edited)

how about ur performance with ultra graphic and medium shadow settings?

I just tested a quick mission with 10 planes and ultra graphics and shadows (over Stalingrad) without a glitch. Logged to Coconut server to test my controls (the update scrambled some of my settings) and it looks good as well. I don't think it is up to the settings anymore. I had those jagged stutters with medium settings, balanced graphics and such. Now it is looking really good.

That seems to have affected VR as well. Before, even at 90fps, we had some camera stuttering. It's butter smooth now, and playable even at lower fps (down to 70 fps). It's pretty much on par with War Thunder now.

Yup, I'm loving it.

Although not fully OT I agree, also the most important spotting is below 10km, the only real thing to spot further out is really big bombers and ground targets. Well, we'll see what the team will come up with :)

Good news, everyone! I just added Kuban to il2missionplanner.com, so you can navigate across that beautiful landscape. I've linked directly to it there, but you can choose it like any other map, in the Settings menu accessed via the "Gear" button on the bottom right. If it doesn't load or you don't see the Kuban option in the map list, use Ctrl+F5 to force refresh the page and disregard your cache (Cmd+Shift+R on OSX).

Also, I consolidated some backend stuff to lower my costs a bit, so those Patreon pledge dollars will go further now   (thanks again Amnesic).

Please be on the lookout for bugs regarding the Kuban map and the Mission Streaming feature and report them in the mission planner thread in the 3rd Party Tools subforum if you find anything wrong (besides the export function not working in all browsers, which is on my list to fix)

Enjoy!

And now, I can fly again, woo! It took me way to long to remember my map adding process... Now its time to find all those snowcapped mountains you've all been screenshotting.

Gotta say a massive thanks to Jason and the rest of the team,

I just spent a few hours and i'm blown away! The map is a marvel, just flying it without combat is nearly enough, zipping through the valleys in my trusty La5 is a dream. The 129 is beautifully ugly and is a beast in ground attack although probably i death trap if intercepted. A big shout out for the revamped P40, again a favourite of mine and now it really is worth flying. Finally a quick mention of the shadows...........wow!

Stunning update, stunning work.

Thanks.

As much as I love and support the project and this devteam, I don't like the tone of devs being aggressive or rude with community members and then having other members parrot that aggressiveness for no other reason than to white knight/gang up on by other community members...

I think most of the regulars and sensible folk already understand the limitations of development and silly suggestions are a common part of any game. Hell, CoD devs got death threats to their family because they patched a sniper rifle.

I don't think k it's a good look and I think it may actually scare noobs away. I suggest we just ignore or politely correct this people in the future.

What you running with that FX8350?

I'm getting between 80 and 110 fps on high setting terrain to 4 at 1440p with my peasant FX8350 ))

GPU AMD 390 8Gb

16Gb 3200 ram

Turn aa off in-game and use GPU aa at 2x

Loving the patch but feel the Spit is a stall tart where Lagg 3, Yak 1, 109G2 anfd FW190 A3 are lovely to fly. Il2 and ME110E feel heavy when liaded for ground pounding.

Returned to Stalingrad campaign and seems much improved, not just visuals and fm but also ai.  Even in quick missions ai seems improved. Had a 109f4 pilot trying to drag me on verticle and able to use climb to extend away from me.

In short, this update seems to give the sim a complete overhaul.  Thank you devs and I like the Free Donbas paint scheme for the Lagg3 )

Agree, the tone comes across as quite aggressive, which is odd when the overwhelming reception has been so good, I don't understand the defensiveness of some of the comments. Maybe its a language barrier thing?

Its quite clear most people are thrilled with the release, the devs should focus on that and acknowlege that not everyone will be pleased all the time. :)

1st thing I noticed once I got airborne, was how much more vibrant the landscape looked in VR.  I know it's a tropical landscape and should look more lush, but it was beyond that.  In VR, both BoS and BoM always appeared quite washed out with diluted, pallid looking colours and landscapes.  At least on my Rift.  I did try to alter settings previously to inject some "zing" into the palette, but never succeeded.  BoK in VR is just great straight out of the box.  Fantastic work.  Flying amongst the mountains, and screaming through the valleys is amazing.  Pats on back all round :)

Well, honestly, read some of MrFies posts, he's intentionally inflamatory and trying to troll where ever he can. i can understand the devs getting frustrated. They're just humans like the rest of us.

Yup, I'm loving it.

I tried the Kuban map yesterday - my 1060 doesn't cut the mustard at Ultra everything but it still looks lovely, a few pop-ins excepted - but Jason has referenced this - (though not the cloud meets tree lined ridge jaggles which in on my gear look nasty - so ill just fly in the sunshine and look forward to a new card - I'm cool with that)

The post above made me realise that the patch wasn't just about Kuban though. So I tried a couple of mission in the old maps. As stated the whole experience is superior. Ran the same quick mission type and YES!! even my 1060 can cream it on Ultra without a hitch at 1080P. Beautiful! The maps seem to have really come to life!

I always run the first mission in the VVS Moscow map campaign to see where and if things have improved in terms of FPS and stutter - the dust behind the aircraft on the field at the start used to be an FPS killer if I zoomed in and there were opportunities to induce headtracking stutter and more fps loss throughout. Not anymore. None. As for Stalingrad. Whether its the overall effect or the new shadows alone but I found myself repeatedly flying over the skeletal warehouses looking at crisp shadows and not knowing why.  Really very immersive.

And from what ive tried, the new FM seems to make GA a much more precise affair for this ham fisted sim jockey. I can even snipe the MG34s without killing the surrounding wildlife! Awesome!

Terrific work!

Very great and nice patch.

The most important first? the Mig 3 since the rudder correction is "flyable", now you can take off in it and land in it.

The La-5 has stopped to take itself for a children toy at landing now, like most Russian planes. Ground loops are rare, now!

The Hs 129 is a very difficult plane to fly and take of with but a interesting one also, a nice addition to the planes of the game.

Graphics did improve a lot for very little impact for my PC, fps are still at 90 on solo flights.I am always in Ultra graphic mode bu only 1920 * 1080.

I did fly 5 hours in this two days and only found some periodic glitches at 500m altitude when flying above flat cultivate ground where the shadows of trees seems to disappear and appear strangely.

But in mountainous regions it does not do it???

A big map with lot of different terrains of interest, magnificent.

IL2 was, is and shall be the top of simulation flight games always, Thanks.  :salute:

Love the new update guys & gals,

Looking forward to getting the A-20 now.

So much water, torpedoes will be part of ammo loadouts eventually correct?

I think we've been told no, not for Kuban. Which is a shame.

If I remember correctly the A-20 were getting is the A-20B which couldn't carry torpedos, it was the C version that could. Might be wrong about that, I think I read that on here a good few months back.

The He111H was capable of carrying torpedoes and the H-6 was used over the North Atlantic as a torpedo bomber as well as in the Med so presumably at the Eastern Front as well.

Midway obviously requires torpedoes to be even remotely plausible so hopefully when it starts to be developed we might see some of that tech migrate across and be added to BoK via the unlock system.

Elated over this update, and these comments are fun to read too.  Great to see everyone enjoying it so much!

Only had time to spend a few minutes in the "Duck" over Kuban late last night, letting it fly me around on autopilot from 3 of the starting points on the new map.  So, only a taste so far for me, but even that little bit was pretty thrilling.  Can't wait for Friday when I can finally jump in!

And yes....

So, stop whining and go fly some damn missions and leave the development to us.

Jason

... that was GOLD:biggrin:

Jason, Daniel, and entire incredible dev team:  you hit another one out of the park here - THANKS!  Take a moment to bask in the success of this milestone, and our sincere appreciation.  S!

Does it look like this?

bf109-distantfields.jpg

That's the normal haze effect for the series right now. There are limits as to how far out they can render and the haze fills that part in. It's not completely ideal but as its been explained to us... necessary to get everything working the way they need it to.

Ideally they could extend it out without performance loss but that's probably a pretty tall order.

Plus, frequently in maritime climates such as around the Black Sea you're going to have a lot of atmospheric haze even on clear days.

Hey, thanks very much, yes it does look like this. Maybe its just when combined with the snow it seems really a bit much. Anyway on to better things. The Spitfire absolutely blew me away, mostly because of the sound. I could leave that thing running in the background just to  listen to the Merlin its amazing.

Posted

The post above made me realise that the patch wasn't just about Kuban though.

Yeah, I suppose something was changed in the code in general. Kuban map is also looking smooth (just circled the airfield). I'm really pleased with it.

Posted

Great great work dev, map is amazing and finally we have the new fm for the 109's and the P40

Posted

You are wrong and have no idea why our horizon is the way it is. Has nothing to do with performance. Stop saying that. It's a fallacy created by professional detractors.

Jason

Hi,

I'll start off by saying I'm a big fan of this series. I'd like to know more about the haze. It might just be that I've been playing other Il2 titles for a while but I don't remember the haze being quite so strong. For me it takes away from the scenery, I'll keep flying around and getting a feel for it.

Anyway, why did the devs make the haze this way? It looks almost identical to how it is to fly when there is a strong inversion and I like the way it seems to clear up above cloud but it'd be nice to have the option or some weather conditions where it is crystal clear.

Thanks

Thanks a bunch guys!

I love the Kuban map. One of my first priorities was to get into the mission editor and spawn a t-34 so I can drive a t-34 off the top of mountains.

My t-34 managed to go about 300 km/h in free fall.

Absolutely stunning. Now I want to take off from a carrier...:P
