Server hosting - some questions

Does anyone know of a US based hosting service that would suffice? Something I can ssh into or remote desktop?

How much traffic (using a WoL type mission as a reference) would one use per month, with a moderate (assumed) user base?

huh? (unless i misunderstood what hosting service, You want a company to host server for you?)
its such a small low end system needed there is no reason to pay anyone else to host it.

Just take a old computer (3ghz,  2 Core AMD or INTEL, few GB ram (even tho Dserver only uses 1 core)
Install IL2 >> Run Dserver
Goto other computer and play.

Regarding the traffic and usage this i am also curious as i can't get unlimited download limits on Fibre optic and only unlimited on ADSL

I found a nice rack array for 90 a month.

I'd avoid virtualized servers, as you share the CPU with everyone else.

You can sometimes find great deals on dedicated boxes at lowendbox.com

Thank you opcode.

No worries. For your SA we did manage to get a server running on Linux after much hassle.

Just as a reply to your ssh comment above ;)

Take a look at eBay or your local second hand seller or something, older second hand servers are pretty cheap.

Often something like a quad xeon 771/775/1366 with 8gb RAM is like 50 euros.

I got a couple of 'm running here. I was thinking about launching an IL-2 server on one of them, but I can't for life get a proper mission built in the mission editor.

I'm leary of putting one on my home pipe. Spectrum gives me excellent speeds and I'd rather not be throttled. Or worse yet slapped into iptables.

Interesting! Care to elaborate? :)

We started with the linux steam client and fiddled with wine and ended up just running a windows 7 VM on a dedicated debian box, emulating a kvm with qemu and we use spice-html5 to expose a remote admin gui in the browser, which means I can log in from any computer and am not shackled to windows and their god-awful remote desktop protocol.

Developing software on the Windows platform must be so awful.  Why these developers don't write the server for linux in the first place is beyond me.

My guess is that it brings overhead that the small team doesn't have time to deal with.

My experience has always been the opposite.  Windows brings extra overhead, and developing for Linux or BSD is usually rather painless by comparison.

The rest of the game is written with Windows tech, I really doubt writing the server for nix would save time since they wouldn't be able to reuse anything from the core game. Not to mention that your average game dev is probably a Windows person and would have to learn how to write a proper nix server.

I agree it would be ideal tho. Imagine just installing Dserver as a normal nix service, and if your box was in the cloud it would be a cinch to keep it automatically restarting in case of crashes and other goodies. All things possible under Windows, but more of a PITA.

Yep. This. Plus, you need to support Windows side server too. It would be too much to ask for people to learn linux just to be able to run the dserver.
