Redglyph Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 (edited) It failed again, with a fresh install on a 1-TB disk this time. I don't know why. Is there any way to install this game? The update directory occupies 62 GB, and the progression bar stopped more or less as usual, at about 90-95 %. I've been trying to update / install this for more than a week now ? It has been taking a good chunk of the data plan, all for nothing, in good part because it's unable to re-use what's already been downloaded, which is really basic functionality for any downloader. Are you sure the installation is still working? Are you planning to improve this installer/updater at some point? SeaOfDreams Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 (edited) My situation may not apply. This is the 2nd time the problem with download has been the same. I ran out of space. (I just ordered a larger drive yesterday, but didn't think that the IL2 download would be so large. I kept freeing space, and the download kept eating it up. I don't know how much I freed in the end... but that was the key. Every time I freed space (in 10GB chunks), the download would continue. So the message need to be fixed. And the download process should check before, and send a message if there is not enough room. These are pretty basic, ideas, so I have no idea why they are not already in a product so long on the market. Seems to me that writing the correct message, and checking for disk space are the first things you do when writing an installer. Also, I could have put the download files on a different drive with much more storage, but slower, but no option for that, either, like in some other apps I use. Edited January 27, 2021 by SeaOfDreams Just occurred to me...I could have possibly moved the whole IL2 dir to a larger drive, but not sure of the results.

Also, I could have put the download files on a different drive with much more storage, but slower, but no option for that, either, like in some other apps I use. Well, here the game had almost 1 TB and it still failed on a fresh install. I could finally get around the problem, but it took a very long time and a lot on the data plan. The organization is a known problem, the GOG had similar issues recently, though it already has bitrate control so at least it's possible to use it during the day. But when the game was updating, it was making the same following mistakes: 1) load everything before patching (it's possible to process one file at a time) 2) load this in the same path as the game (it's possible to download on another disk, HDD for example) 3) uncompress everything at the same time (it's possible to process one file at a time) 4) uncompress in the same path (it's recommended to do that on another drive, for performance if nothing else) 5) then only replace the original files. (I would understand the need to keep the original files until the last moment, if the idea was to let the user play even if the update failed. But here this is not possible, another big problem with IL-2 is that you are forced to update when it's available, same as Steam. So this last step isn't even justified.) 6) no way to interrupt and restart from what has been already downloaded (it should identify the downloaded files and not start from scratch) So it means you practically triple the space requirement. Just changing the path for 2 and 4 would probably take less than one hour to fix and validate. Changing the overall loop to process file by file may take a bit longer if there are special cases, though I can't think of anything vicious here. Implementing the throttling shouldn't be very hard either, it's basic flow regulation, less than one hour's development. Restarting from an interrupted download, or implementing a pause, is almost straightforward (though I'm not sure they maintain a per-file digest to verify the current status). Most of those are really basic requirements of a modern installer / updater for games that occupy more than 10 GB, especially with potentially thousands of users. GOG brought those improvements to their installer, now it's much easier to update thanks to that! Edited January 28, 2021 by Redglyph
RossMarBow Posted January 31, 2021 Posted January 31, 2021 This is what my frame times look like data from ocat recorded on multiplayer server taking off and landing other parts of the data i don't understand are 15.91% missed frames no frames should be missing as I'm playing with a 120fps target on a 144hz monitor avg fps 115.43 avg frame times 8.66ms 99th percentile 16.02ms this causes the dimness of my monitor to flicker which means those bad frame times are below 40fps? or maybe 20fps? because its causing freesync to fail which is why its dimming other random thing iv already mentioned is dragging the fuel slider causes my game client to lag and i was talking to someone on srs my d9 could take something like 400L max but his game was saying he could take 4000L max I have ocat data for siege and world of warships and they are a lot smoother, and I also don't get dimming specs are 5600x 5700 xt
RossMarBow Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 (edited) Ok I did a bunch of testing of different graphics settings I tested 7 different graphics combinations in single player all with hud/messages/techochat disabled For now the important results are max graphics in orange hud/text/technochat off vs not max graphics in multiplayer with hud/text/technochat on From last night same graphics setting same server taking off doing a loop and landing I thought I solved the problem as hud/text/technochat off this seemed to fix the dimming But the game is a lot harder like this It looks the same but I wasn't getting flickering dimming ***the multiplayer map is kuban so are my single player tests my single player tests have all the ground unit etc. on I then tested 7 different graphics settings in single player screen shots of test and settings attached this is with hud and technochat etc. disabled setting 99th percentile frames gfx card total watts max 18.86 high 12.74 med 12.73 162 w low 9.6 157 w low min 6.46 116 w ultra adjusted 9.47 balanced adjusted 11.2https://imgur.com/a/e0DjY1t above compares my low min setting with medium both are using the balanced preset but are using different sub settings Next I will focus on finding the cause of the dimming flicker And maybe go deeper into what makes the game look good vs what makes the game run bad ****setting mirrors higher than the 2nd lowest setting offers no benefits it only makes the mirror worse because now your plane can block it on the lowest mirror setting your plane doesn't get in the way but you can see everything behind you just as well the goal is to get the lowest smoothest curve possible while maximizing visual information to increase combat ability then bumping settings up that make the game look significantly better ok so started off with most graphics settings off airstartsImgur: The magic of the Internet giving me 6.35ms bumped clouds +1 8.56 ssao sharpen off 7.06 ssao sharpen on msaax4 10.07 fxaax4 8.35 ssao sharpen off clouds +1 8.35 clouds max 7.00 ultra sharpen clouds med 8.63 high 8.98 groundstarts balanced 7.43 sharpen off 8.79 low sharpen on clouds high 7.23 shadows low clouds med 7.45 shadows medium 7.99 shadows high 8.05 grass distant 10.45 ultra grass normal 13.31 high 11.35 balanced (jarring popin) 10.40 high roughness low 11.85 airstarts balanced 12.61 low 9.2 target framerate 144 10.3 same settings online 11.25 final settings https://imgur.com/a/9dSLXX6 no limit vs limit 144 vs multiplayer limit 144 * with or without fps limit set to 144 in menu screens limit is 144 * loading screen limit is 30 which is below the freesync threshold of 40 so causes flickering dimming this is what the fuel slider causes Edited February 3, 2021 by brahguevara 1
Oranges123* Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 Hi y'all, Can anyone help me with issues downloading battle of Bodenplatte to my desktop PC? I download installer and go through the installation process with this. Simulation seems to nearly install then it hangs at the last minute with the message 'failed to update??' . Nice woman at support desk has tried to help but no joy so far - computer been on solidly for 10 days trying to load this. Avast virus checker turned on 'silent'. Have updated WIN 10. Have seen a few times a message that the sim wont download because "Microsoft .NET is already part of (my) operating system" - what the hell is all this about? Any suggestions gratefully recieved. Kind regards. Malcolm Furneaux
56RAF_Stickz Posted February 18, 2021 Posted February 18, 2021 hyi Oranges - you are in the wrong forum page mate - this is for cliffs of dover - whilst it has the il2 name this is a different game to it. You will get better help in their part of the forum - the great battles section.

Could you post your system specs, your windows version, your GPU drivers, and all of the things you have tried so far? There are a few things that usually fix it, but it would be good to see what you have tried.
I-Fly-Then-Die Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 Hello, I just bought and downloaded Il-2 Battle of stalingrad,(Just made the jump from good ole 1946), and was just wondering I could some thing to make it nicer. Whenever I Turn the camera, usually in 2nd person, but in first as well, the game blurs everything very badly. Justa mumble of colors. It fixes it self after I center it. I don't know what does it. 2nd, and smaller I have joystick, but it does not have rudder rotation, (just roll and pitch) so I have to use z&x for rudder. However, unlike other games when I let go of the rudder keys it stays in the same position, rather than reverting back to neutral like all other games I have played.(Rise of flight, il2 1946..etc) Is there any setting to switch this? Last, whenever I try to connect to a multiplayer server, It loads for about 6ish minutes, goes to a black screen for a few seconds, than goes the the server main screen and map. (with objectives and mission description)-However, It just says "please wait..." at the top and the cursor is rotating lading symbol that I can move around with little or no lag. I cannot click or zoom on the map, or scroll on the mission description. Any ideas? Big sorry for all of this, just wanted to ask :(

You'll find it here: For the rest of your issues, it might be helpful to tell us what system you are running (system specs), maybe a screenshot of your game'sgraphics setting. Thank you. Cheers

This is especially if you have a poor connection to the server.
=FI=Macca Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 Hi there, I have a problem with the installation of Il-2 on my dad's machine. It sports I7-4770k and 2x 770 @ SLI. , 16 GB RAM, Z87 mobo. Previously itwas my computer, which used to run the game really nice. Now, after the problems with updating ( i had to delete the whole update folder and redownload it) and than a complete reinstall of the game I'm still not having the possiblity to run it. So it goes like this. I am at the administrator account of fully updated Win 10. I have the updated graphics drivers from Nvidia. I installed the game on a separate HDD, where it used to be - not the C:\program files, etc. I run the launcher with admin priviliges. I set the Il-2 exe also to be run as admin user. Whenever I launch the launcher and change settings (switch off the VR, tick the full screen option, etc) it will not save these settings. So once the game is installed and I click launch, after all is installed and updated, I just get the black box in the middle of the screen, where the launcher window used to be, and than the whole app closes. I relaunch the launcher- settings were not even saved. No joy. Any ideas how to fix this problem? I was hoping with doing some online flying with my dad but damn... If dx diag is needed let me know... at the moment I'm happily downloading the game for 10th time... at 5MB per second, so its like blood sinking into sand... Cheers, Mac

When you deleted your update folder, did you also delete 'everything' (entire game)? If not, try doing so before re-downloading the game. Residual old files could be corrupting the download. Good luck.
=FI=Macca Posted May 5, 2021 Posted May 5, 2021 Yes, I deleted the whole folder and emptied the bin. Maybe, just maybe I found a solution. Switched off all the XBox companion and game bar apps. Switche off Nvidia Experience overlay. Now all works just fine. But I havent managed to reproduce the problem so far - now with the nvidia stuff on the game works just as if nothing bad has happend to it! Anyway, now to setup the controls for me dad and he should be good to go. Cheers! Mac
Pygmalion Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 Opening the game, it'll run fine, perfectly smooth, 100s of frames per second. After an hour, a few sorties, it'll start to stutter horribly, all at once. FPS is still high, but it just stutters obnoxiusly. Closing and opening the game fixes it again. Only began after the last update.
Pygmalion Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 29 minutes ago, -Six-Motivated said: It could potentially be a memory leak. I would keep an eye on your RAM and VRAM usage through RTSS to be sure. For some unknown reason, this game has been performing horribly over that last few months for me. 2015 levels of bad. That's terrible. How does one fix a memory leak?
Startrek66 Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 My experience is that you have to consider one case at a time, there is no universal solution. I advise you as they told you to monitor with RTSS and above all to close all unnecessary system processes using utility's such as game booster or similar.
jollyjack Posted May 7, 2021 Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) I had that, and after a lot of time messing around i found that it was mission related, OR the latest NVIDIA drivers. Read about that on an NVIDIA forum. I also saved the mission in the ME as all groups together, and reloaded those on a fresh map. One of them solved it. That if you don't have other stuff crashing. ADDED: the NVDIA driver i use now running fine is 451.85, and i did not install Geaoforce Experience nor the audio drivers. There are various software tools to check your memory, all time consuming. Cleaning the memory DIMM slots from dust saved me once. If you have enough, remove one by one, and see if the game run's OK. Be aware of the DIMM slot that needs to be filled primarily. Given the details, I believe that's what your issue is. I reinstalled and it fixed it for about a day. Not the stutters persist no matter what, unless I turn the computer on and then off again. This is the only game I'm having issues with.

2/JG26_rudidlo Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 @-DED-Rapidus, unfortunately not. I didn't have a clue about configuring IL to make memory dumps. I will set it and in case of any further crash, I will attach dumps as well. Thank you for letting me know about this option. 1
