Will the old forum's user accounts be migrated to the new forum or do we need to re-register?

Posted (edited)
Цитата

It will be similar to the old one, but there will no longer be a direct connection between the forum and website databases. Accounts on the new forum will be completely independent of accounts on the website.

Цитата

Registration on the forum will not be automatic or mandatory. You can register at your discretion, and your forum nickname may differ from your in-game nickname.

Hopefully this answers your question. No interconnection means we'll need to creat new, forum-specific accounts instead of using "mirrors" of our in-game clients.

It does not, that is why I asked. I'd hope the users from the old forum would be migrated to the new one. If they're not, you open the possibility for trolling and nick hijacking.

Is there a way for the new site to prevent nick hijacking since they have the existing user database as a reference?

Can certain topics be migrated as they have many links attached within the posts?  I am specifically thinking of the posts regarding skins for various aircraft.  I can see this having posts in the new forums and the old and getting rather confusing, or the old getting ignored.

Will our current (old) forum accounts be automatically deleted? Or will it be possible to somehow delete them when there is no point in their existence? Personally, I try not to be registered on sites that I no longer use, but I don't see any "delete account" button. Or will they just remain dormant? :russian_ru:

EDIT: I found it. So new question...should I delete my account, or it will be deleted?

This is basically a freezing in place of the forums here, so I don't really see any reason why you would need to delete your account. You just won't be able to use it anymore to post new content.

We are aiming for a clean slate here with the new forums, so my intent is that users can bring over whatever old content they want from the old site if they want to as they see fit.

Luke,

"We are aiming for a clean slate here with the new forums, so my intent is that users can bring over whatever old content they want from the old site if they want to as they see fit. "

What exactly does this mean?

As topics with user created SP, MP missions, campaigns are not moving to the new forum. Will folks be allowed to download missions directly from the new forum?

Yes, what I mean is that members are welcome to repost whatever they think is useful content on the new website. These forums aren't being wiped; they are just being placed in a permanent state of stasis.

OK, it sounds like in the new forum starting Monday we could post in a new thread there links to the soon-to-be-old forum's posts that contain files we had shared before, and people can choose to still download those files from the soon-to-be-old forum's posts in theoretical perpetuity.

I think I have it, Luke. But to check.

From Devs announcement.
"On Monday, November 24, 2025, a new game forum will be launched. It will be similar to the old one, but there will no longer be a direct connection between the forum and website databases."

This current IL2 Forum website databases cannot be written on after the 24th. So, lets' say I need to repair a mission under 600kB directly downable from the forum database or larger needed a different OneDrive Link written in the forum database after the 24th due to a version update. There would have been no way to edit the topic and repost the repaired mission within the database of this Forum.
Is that correct?

Correct

They will still be there but my advice would be to download beforehand anything you really don't want to lose, just in case something goes wrong.

If you have important information in your private messages on the old forum that you would like to save, please do so before Monday, as you won't be able to access them after that.

Is there any forum process or option to export and download them, or is this more like a manual copy-pasta operation?

I can understand the reasons to do it, and to have a clean slate. So we have to register as new in the new forum. That's fine up to this point.

Now here is the problem. Let's say I have created a topic which has a number of posts attached to it, the number does not matter. Is there a way to copy and paste the whole thread, (not a single post) from the old forum to the new forum? You mentioned that it is basically the same one but just distinct, which means a recreation of this forum.

There is vary valuable information mainly for those who posted on the Mission Making, Mission Editor forum, as well as on the Technical Issues, Hardware, Bugs.

As long as Great Battles (Flying Circus, Tank Crew included) continues as you have shown the willingness to do it at least for the foreseeable future or until Korea is released and maybe beyond, then this repository of very valuable information should remain active. The only way is that certain topics with their thread could be recopied in the new forum to continue to be developed.

Having to jump from the new forum to the old one to find the info and then back to the new one to post, etc. is not ideal at this point.

By being able to copy and paste topics from the old to the new solves the problem. And that should be possible as the new forum is basically the same one.

The upside of switching over now is that pretty much all of the long term-valuable content for the Korea engine will be on the new forum. But for GB it will require looking at both forums.

I do wish we could have the option of Steam Workshop for content like mods, skins, and campaigns, even if half the players do not play through Steam.

Hi all

I think it's a good thing to make is 'more safe' for the users

by removing the automated connections between 'forum' and 'IL2 acount'

I really hope that

- the old forum wil not be deleted within the next deacades

- providing links from the 'new' forum to the 'old' forum will work

Because as we cannot post anything new in the 'old' forum after the change  to the 'new' forum

the only way to add informations to the 'old' one would be

add a link to the old one

and post new content

And if the 'old' content is gone within the next days/weeks/months/years/...

that would be a hard kick into the ass of every user helping to get the community solving troubles of any kind (especially mission crators)

And according to the 'badges' (or the no more being implemented due to no more connection between both systems)

you should implement a safe way, that every user can select, if he wants his 'badges' back in the new system!

If the 'new forum' account or the 'IL2 account' is hacked... Bad luck

But in any case:

If only one of the accounts is hacked, there is no way to change anything on the other account.

And to change tha 'badges' (manually implemented by the user with a safe system) you'ld need BOTH accounts!

Here's a thought.  Since IL-2 GB and Korea are two distinctly separate sims, why not leave the GB forum alone and just start a new forum for Korea?

We want all discussion about our titles on one website, so no, this forum will be shutting down come Monday, per the announcement.

A while back I suggested that people post their mods and such on Nexusmods, rather than using dropbox or one of the other services where the contents expires after a while. But unfortunately, I didn't get much response.

I thought it was said the forum would be read only, so if this forum is shutting down we wouldn't be able to discuss problems with skins, careers or working with the editor etc...

This forum, right here, will be read-only. 🙂

Appreciate it, Luke.

We've got our work orders creators and users.  Everything you wish to save needs to get wrapped up for moving day. It's up to folks to participate with this forums content in the new forum.

All good,

@LukeFF Will this be allowed? It seems to be the only way to continue a subject / discussion.

As mentioned above, I would imagine we will be reposting the original content of discussion threads that are on this forum in the new forum as a new post. Then one could add a link to the old post/discussion below the original post and carry on. Although it is some extra work, I don't see a big problem. Swapping forums to read previous content doesn't seem like a big deal either for those that know how to open new tabs in a browser.

Regarding forum nicknames, that might be confusing but I guess we will just have to figure it out. Since the new forum is going to focus on Korea, I wonder if anyone has dibs on "Big Honcho" yet? @LukeFF ????

:salute:

Well, they better be tier one with a moniker like that, or look like Robert Mitchum, otherwise they are going to look a little silly 🤣

This is the internet. Nobody knows what you look like. Though I've been compared to Clint Eastwood in real life, so it isn't an issue for me... 😛

The 1960-70s Clint Eastwood or the 2025 version?
