Gromyak Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Hi, I'm pretty new to IL-2 and flight sims, and was helping that you guys could help me with a problem I'm having with head-tracking: I use SmoothTrack (iPhone-based head-tracking) with OpenTrack for head-tracking. I've spent the last few weeks tweaking it (mainly the curves in OpenTrack), and it works quite well while I'm flying upright--I can look up and all around with good visibility. The problem is that when I'm banking or doing other maneuvers (ie, when I'm in combat, when I need head-tracking), the head-tracking seems to suddenly become much more restricted--I can't look very far up or behind, the camera just won't go there. While my tweaking in OpenTrack has improved the general head-tracking, I have not been able to resolve this problem. Does anyone have any pointers? Is the head-tracking getting "confused" while banking because the angles are all different? Could this be a problem with SmoothTrack? Or OpenTrack? Or are some of my settings just wrong? For now I've got some quickviews tied to my joystick so that I am not totally blind, but I would really like to fix head-tracking so that I have good visibility all the time!
Raptorattacker Posted October 27 Posted October 27 Yeah, it's a thing. If you think, if you WERE in a plane and banking then your view WOULD be restricted wouldn't it? If you were banking right then your natural movement would be to look up and LEFT to see what was behind you.
MaxPower Posted October 28 Posted October 28 (edited) My head seems to enjoy the same range of motion regardless of the orientation of my body with respect to the Earth's gravitational field. Anywho I don't seem to have the same restriction with trackir so it might be a smoothtrack thing? Edited October 30 by MaxPower
BaglanBoy Posted October 28 Posted October 28 If you intend to fly this fabulous combat sim for the foreseeable future , I would recommend TrackIR pro, you can create your own profile which covers all angles from within the cockpit. There is an excellent tutorial on YouTube which will explain the setup, Good Luck.
Cardolan Posted October 29 Posted October 29 I am a new user of head tracking and I am very, very pleased with TrackHat. I just have the IR camera pointing at my (beautiful) face and it tracks all my movements without issues. Setup is very easy too.

But I use trackir with the camera pointing at my beautiful eyes.

It's quite sexy and no wires required. Just a light cap that fits over my beautiful head without messing up my hair. I can't imagine what those VR goggles do to one's hair. It's horrifying and doesn't allow the scalp to breathe. 1
Zooropa_Fly Posted October 30 Posted October 30 (edited) You don't have to look like a complete knob in a baseball cap just because you have Track IR.. Spoiler Edited October 30 by Zooropa_Fly 2

As I am bald, I completely bypass the cap to allow my amazing head to shine in the sun (*)! (*) - Even if the cap @Zooropa_Fly is really neat, avoiding to wear anything in my head or otherwise to enjoy the funtion of looking around the cockpit is a big plus for me.

So you're saying TrackHat doesn't use a hat? Interesting. Nonetheless a healthy option for your scalp and amazing head. 9 hours ago, Cardolan said: (*) - Even if the cap @Zooropa_Fly is really neat, avoiding to wear anything in my head or otherwise to enjoy the funtion of looking around the cockpit is a big plus for me. Trackir (with the prong thing on the peak of one's cap) also allows complete freedom. The only downside is sometimes if the prong thing (being spring steel) is nudged or bumped accidently it pings off into space at alarming speed. Missed the missus by inches once! You'll have me eye out with that thing darl she said with a laugh. I love that woman. 4
BlitzPig_EL Posted October 30 Posted October 30 Just use the Track Clip Pro. No hat needed, just attach it to your headset. 2
Cardolan Posted October 31 Posted October 31 Yes, TrackHat doesn't need an hat - in spite of its name! - cap, or headset. It just translates the movements from the image of your head position collected by the camera to the sim. The only hardware necessary is the special camera. I am very happy with this setup even if I never tried another one, so can't really compare.
Kubert Posted October 31 Posted October 31 (edited) I am using hat, because I have problems with Clip on the headset. Whatever I put Clip on it, always in certain angle two points overlap and TrackIR stop work for a second. In my opinion three points on a hat are better, more symetrical positioned. Maybe I am doing something wrong or my headset is weird, but this is my experience with the Clip. Edited October 31 by Kubert
Paddlefoot Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Delanclip Fusion with camera is another excellent option over Trackir 5 with pro clip.
RNAS10_Mitchell Posted November 1 Posted November 1 (edited) I use one of these. Comes with a headband that you attach the device to with velcro. When using a headset for coms, you just velcro it to the coms headset instead of the headband. No wires, uses a single AA battery. Works great. https://grassmonkeysimulations.com/ This video (not mine), shows how to perfectly setup opentrack. I suspect your settings are causing the problem you're having. Good luck!
