Update 6.001: Odessa and Leningrad Early Access

Thanks! I'm really looking forward to creating some missions on the Leningrad map, but there were plenty of interesting tank battles around Odessa as well. In both cases the mission building options would really be enhanced by the addition of Soviet, and German AI infantry squads. I suppose while I'm asking I might as well go all in and ask for Finnish and Romanian squads as well.😉

I actually realized it has nothing to do with multiplayer.  The bug is if you spawn into a plane with it's engine off.  I tried QMB with a parked plane, and it had the bug.  I spawned in again with the engine running, and it wasn't an issue; the rocket selector knob was set to roman numeral 1, which was one click clockwise from where it is if you spawn with engine not running.

That's a great discovery!  Hope this can get fixed!  I prefer sniping with one rocket but for now my missions are pairs.

I thought I read that the rockets on the I-153 could only be fired in pairs in real life?

I have so many other questions about this photo!

Yep, if you look closely you can see Biggles on the wing preparing to smuggle himself unseen out of Odessa after an unfortunate incident with Uncle Joe. It was later documented in the novel 'Biggles Back in the USSR'. True story.

It has the same firing options as any other Soviet plane. Currently it's bugged when you start a mission with the engine off.

Just got the news and bought!   I-153 is fun to free fly and strafe trucks with!

I see in the patch notes that the 109 DM got adjusted to buff up the wings a bit.

I'll just say that there's only been 2 major types of damage that I've observed:

1) A heavy volley hit to the wing tip that makes it snap right off, and 2) A heavy volley hit to the wing root / center area of the wing - which the pilot sometimes continues to stress by maneuvering too much until it finally breaks.

If the adjustment is for the first, I say, "Yeah. I can see that.", even though I've seen the wingtips go to a "could break more at any moment" state and still hold.

If the adjustment is for the second, I say, "It (previous version) seems to work as it's supposed to - at least for me." That said, a 109 that took a heavy wing hit should have to rely on staying as "unloaded" (maneuvering force, etc.) and running as fast as possible in order to not fully break the plane.  Besides, I've seen plenty of AI 109s take heavy hits and not break but still fight decently.

Regardless of all that, Great Job 1c and associates!  Thanks for continuing to service the IL-2GB series and keeping the overall quality of what you're now adding

on-par (or improved) from the previous installments!  o7

A question about the LAGG3:

when I operate the cooler no handle moves inside the cockpit, do I miss something?

At all:

When I fly fast and low over the city on the new Map I experience absolutely NO stutters like on other maps… Is there something improved and if yes will we have this improvement later on other maps? 😊😊

P.S. On a serious note: Interesting photo though - it would be interesting to confirm the variant.

Just don't take any flak hits.

I was patrolling above the lines on. Stalingrad online mission I made and took a direct hit from what I surmised was 88mm flak.  Instant black screen, with little bits fluttering down over the river.

Had my first flight in the I-153. Loved it. What a neat plane!

Thank you folks 😀

Side question - are there still plans to have AQMB missions on the new maps eventually?

I'm sure it's good!  The I-153 and I-16 are 2 planes that I unexpectedly fell in love with from the original IL-2 '46 title!

I was just giving my first impression from a quick 10-minute try-out flight.

What I meant was that I have just started to create a V88.2 version with implemented Odessa.

I started yesterday and current status is 5%.

I hope that the first version is completed in ca. 2 weeks.

This first version will be close to Vanders EMG standard, maybe integrated later by him in the official EMG.

After this is done I will continue working with a more customized version with further front lines and modified 1941 settings (e.g. 1941 tank units, gun boats,...)

The special thing about the Odessa map are the huge number of static objects (towns) and the file sizes.

For the first step that should be suitable for the implementation into the original EMG I will

have to find a simple solution, I think a ca. 160x160km area with late July - September fronts with the siege of Odessa.

In later versions early front lines and 1944 front lines will be added too.

My current test / work front line area covers the whole map area.

I am currently checking historical maps to find an acceptable  compromise.

I believe I have a train that crashes into some flatcars that are on the usable RR track in Zastava.

They are blocking the right of way.  Can these be removed?  I think the circled area is the right track.

After some testing with the Odessa map i found there's some overhaul needed maybe of the Template for the map regarding blocks.

When you import the Odessa Full scene group, there are some integrity check errors, maybe block models are missing from the uploaded template for 6.001?

files regarding these kp_fence ***.mgm and txt related files seem to be missing from the corresponding gtp files.

For my Overview Test Front I have changed the front line to semi historical  01. July 1941.

But this front will stay on Hold until the first release of the 3 compact Odessa front areas for EMG implementation.

This seems good! Wish we had a litle more romania on the map.  There was airbatles from day one 22 june, and even before. I have been reading some history and it seems the clash with the soviet started before the actuall war. The Hurricane flying squadron shot down some il16 in early june. They flew from fields just 50-60km outside our map!

For the EMG Airfields (and the related waypoints for take off, landing and enemy attacks) I need minimum 10km distance to the limit of the flyable are of the map to avoid "you are leaving the map" warnings.

Just for your information:

If a small part of the Kuban map would fit to Romania:

Off_Winters has supplied us with unlabeled map tiles (He has removed manually all russian town labels).

This means only some new Romanian City Labels to be added with Gimp.

But I will be busy too for the next 1 or 2 months with the Odessa EMG.

I think someone with better knowledge of Romania would have to answer that question. I think the Odessa map has enough places to cover many interesting scenarios. A lot of action took place over the area we have in june/july. we just have such a small part of Romania that the early airfields are outside of it. But we can just substitute them for places like Galati and Barland. Shorter flights aren't something many will complain about anyway. I am making some missions for the Romanian Hurricanes, and they operated just outside of our map from June 22. But the action reported takes place often inside our map.

Missions would be nice. Maybe one with a Blenheim 🙂

Taken from Cruciati ai Inaltimilor. Sorin Turturica

On the morning of August 13, 1941, several Messerschmitt 109 aircraft were on a collective mission in the Vasilievka area, part of the forward direction of the 1st Guards Division. At 07.15, a patrol led by the commander of the 58th Squadron, Captain Gheorghe Vasiliu, noticed a Soviet airfield about which nothing was known. Approaching, he was unable to attack it, because around fifteen Soviet planes took off and engaged the Romanian pilots. For the first time in this war, a formation of the 7th Group claimed, on its return from the mission, no less than five downed Soviet aircraft. These went to captain av. Vasilu (1), adjutant left av. Mucenica (2) and adjutant stg.av. Lungulescu (2).

On August 14, the Romanian army was heavily counterattacked by Soviet armored vehicles and assault aircraft, and the Romanian air force was, as was the case in such moments, in great demand. The airmen of the 7th Group executed several free fighter missions. During one of them, in the evening, a patrol saw that a Bristol Blenheim was being attacked by four Rata (rata = duck in Romanian, in reality a Polikarpov I-16) planes. The twin-engine was saved by the intervention of the Romanian hunters, who managed to shoot down a Soviet aircraft (through Lieutenant Ioan Bocsan) and damage another (through Lieutenant Ioan Di Cesare). Two more victories were obtained the next day, through the adjutant left. Mucenica and adjutant left av. Lungulescu, whose patrol, led by Captain av. Vasiliu, fought again in numerical inferiority.

Is it possible for Ochakov to have an airfield?  9 IAP could use it.

Here is what I found in Airfields - Russia and Ukraine :

Otschakow II (RUSS/UKR) (a.k.a. Ochakov, Ochakiv) (ZNr. 10-2398) (c. 46 37 N – 31 32 E) General: airfield (Fliegerhorst) in S Ukraine 80 km W of Kherson and 65 km ENE of Odessa. Rated for fighters. Exact location of the airfield not determined. Same as Otschakow-Aleksandredar II? (see below). History: no information found, however no record found of occupation or use by Luftwaffe air units. Surface and Dimensions: natural surface measuring approx. 1890 x 1720 meters (2065 x 1880 yards). Infrastructure: no details found. Dispersal: no details found.

Remarks:

22 Jun 41: Soviet 9 IAP (I-152s, I-153s and Yak-1s) based here.

13 Aug 41: late morning raid by 2 Luftwaffe bombers - claimed 4 enemy fighters destroyed and 1 damaged on the ground, while the hangars were shot up.

15 Aug 41: Soviet 9 IAP moved here.

16 Aug 41: Ochakov/North (Ochakov II?) hit by 2 Luftwaffe fighters and 2 more carrying bombs - reported bombs well-placed between parked aircraft and on a hangar.

17 Aug 41: attacked by 4 Luftwaffe fighters and 14 fighter-bombers (Jabos) - reported 2 hits next to a hangar.

21 Aug 41: Ochakov captured by Axis troops along with 2 fighters, 1 bomber and 800 VVS prisoners. All 3 of the aircraft were serviceable.

Operational Units: 3.(H)/Aufkl.Gr. 13 (Aug 41)? [Sources: chronologies; AFHRA, BA-MA; NARA incl. T-321 roll 239/OKL 903; OKL Flugplatzatlas; PRO/NA; web site ww2.dk]

I'd just like to make a repost of an old Juri_JS post about the old Bessarabia map made for the old IL-2 1946.  It has relevant information for the new map.
