Korea. IL-2 Series Dev Blog #27: Trains

Hello comrades!

Today let’s dive to the ground in search of targets. No matter how interesting the military equipment directly involved in combat is, victory is impossible without adequate supply. Supply lines must be protected while the enemy must be prevented from replenishing his reserves — the ideal target for a ground attack aircraft are not well-protected military vehicles, but vulnerable transport columns and trains. We have already told you about road transport and its variety in the 12th issue of our diary, so today we will talk about trains — locomotives and railcars.

The full blog entry can be read here: https://il2-korea.com/news/dd_27

Look very nice, I would suggest moving the .50 on the Sherman's turret to the stowage pintle on the back of the turret for the ones loaded on the flatcars.

Very nice work, from an old steam engine fan.

@LukeFF

There is a little error in the list of railcars, the platform type is not separated out with a bullet point, but is accidentally added to the flatcar bullet point.

And I assume that the text then also needs to be changed to talk about 8 types of railcars, instead of 7.

Wow this looks great. Lots of stuff to blow up! Those rail yards look amazing! Ground objects look very detailed too.

It's just duplicated text, but thanks. 🙂

Did the North Koreans have much success intercepting US/South Korean rail? I would guess it didn’t happen very often. Anyone have statistics on this?

That may just be a translation error Aapje.

What we in North America call a flat car, is a called a platform car elsewhere.

Very impressive level of detail, those screenshots looking amazing.

Can't wait to add people to the scenery and then we have the next level of immersion.

Yeah, it did look a bit weird, both duplicate and not exactly the same. Perhaps the AI went haywire.

I'd be very curious if the damage model is being improved - or the behaviour of locomotives under attack (research seems to indicate trains often stopped when under air attack so that the crew could abandon the train).

Anyway, there is one serious issue I've noticed:

The Switch (Turnout in U.K.) has a problem - the points come together at an angle instead of tapering. In real life that would guarantee a derailment.

When tracks come together they need to blend using splines (until both sets of track are going in the same direction). It shouldn't be that hard to do (other games do it) - and it is pretty essential (especially with the increased level of detail/3d rails).

P.S. This is as serious an issue as having the wheels of an airplane be at a 90 degree angle or something - it is a mechanical impossibility for a remotely functioning system.

Apparently there were some KPAAF attacks on railway stations early in the war.

Except for the map limitations - is there anything preventing us from modelling the early war? (except perhaps the slightly greater role played by the F-82 ;) )

For the KPAAF it should be possible to show operations in late June/early July 1950. For the Americans the lack of airfields and the missing F-82 will be a problem.

Fantastic! Beautiful!  Impressive detail.  Quality seems far above trains in IL-2: Great Battles and earlier IL-2: 1946.  Now all we need is a twin-engine Douglas B-26 Invader (either glass-nose or gun-nose version) for interdiction missions against rail targets such as rail yards.  😜

This is fab, but what is really impressive are the steam effects, very realistic! Guessing a similar model will be used for smoke effects on aircraft?

You said it. Logistics is the lifeline for those fighting on the front line.

I love the amount of work that went into this! :)

Great job! Gonna be a shame if we have to bomb them.

Kind regards,

That's like saying it's a shame women put on makeup and do their hair, just for us to mess it all up.
