5070Ti with an Oculus Rift or Pimax Crystal Light? (price to value judgement)

Hi all,

It's been nearly three years since my old PC died and the time has come with the Nvidia 50 series to get a new one and start flying again.

Given a 5070Ti system and a loose plan to upgrade to something of the level of Pimax Super in say a year or so (and maybe swapping out the card for a theoretical 5080 Super), what might be the best VR option out of:

  1. Quest 3 (available in a local shop) for about 1/3rd of the price of a Pimax Crystal Light (if the 128GB version).
  2. Pimax Crystal Light (ordered from China and with 1-2 month delay and whatever issues should there be quality problems).

From what I've read elsewhere there's maybe not a big enough difference to justify the extra cost of the Crystal for this scenario.

With regards to the Quest 3, if mainly using it for PC based games (IL2, DCS, FS, Vtol VR, Automobilista 2), I guess the 128GB version would be sufficient right? No need for the more expensive 512GB version?

Cheers. ~

IMO, without considering the waiting time and the price, I would pick the Quest3, even taking into account I hate Meta (for killing PCVR devices line).

Now, taking into account price and that waiting time, the Quest3 is even more the best choice.

But, there are many Crystal Light happy users as well.

Having a 5070Ti (which is about the performance of 30% that 4070Ti for non DLSS or RT games), the Quest3 fits better.

Here some tests I did with each device:

And yes, the 128Gb is more than enough (I have that one). For PCVR games you don´t need Quest3 memory.

With that large a price difference, and the plan to upgrade in a year, I think that the choice is obvious. Running the risk of experiencing QA issues with the Crystal Light is much less worth it, if you don't stick with the headset for a long time.

Yeah, it seems that way. I was just really checking whether the Quest 3 covers the "good enough" level or whether it would be a disappointing experience. It seems that it should be okay, so that's the plan now. I'm actually thinking of going all the way to a 5090 so then everything's ready once wide-FOV higher end VR arrives. Thanks for your input. 👍

Quest 3 is the way to go for now.

Considering the performance increase of the 5070 Ti over the 4070 Ti, I would perhaps look for a used 4070 Ti Super instead.

Nvidia's performance claims of the x90 - x80 - x70 Ti - x70 class' generational uplift respectively.

As you can see in these graphs from Nvidia themselves, which proved themselves to be quite accurate in regards to the 5090,

the 5070 Ti seems about 20-25% faster than the 4070 Ti.

Given that you won't be getting any of the newer cards at MSRP unless you're extremely lucky, I would guess the 5070 Ti will cost you around 950-1000$ depending on the model you get.

The 4070 Ti Super performed at around 8% better than the 4070 Ti, meaning the 5070 Ti will be anything from 11-16% faster than the 4070 Ti Super.
