kraut1 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 (edited) Hi All, I want to try to simulate the Y-Control for IL-2 GB for high altitude intercept missions above cloud cover. (with low accuracy ca. +-5...10km, only for daylight missions) It seems to me, that beginning in late 43 the FuG16ZY was used to display the bearing to the target with the AFN-2 indicator to replace the voice communication that was more vulnerable to jamming and interception. Is this correct? Answer: No thanks @AEthelraedUnraed! But in respect of IL-2 GB and the limited radio / radar functions I think it is an alternative, to provide the pilots at least in a bit more realistic way with informations, better than moving symbols on the map. And it could have some historical context when used as a simulation of the FuG 120 Bernhard/Bernhardine System I have listened in YouTube to memorys of a young LW Pilot in spring 44 in Romania who flew sometimes the "Y-fighter" of a Gruppe of JG77, but he did not explained how the Y-Control worked. According to english Wikipedia the bearing was indicated in the cockpit: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftwaffe_radio_equipment_of_World_War_II According to english Wikipedia the bearing was indicated in the cockpit to avoid voice communication: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y-Control_for_fighters I have already seen a detailed Video how the device works, but it was not mentioned that the bearing to the target was displayed in the AFN-2: Edited January 22 by kraut1 1
AEthelraedUnraed Posted January 22 Posted January 22 In the thread above, I've shared some of my knowledge about this system. Should anyone be interested, I can probably dig up some more specifics. 1
kraut1 Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 AEthelraedUnraed is right, here my replay from the mod post: Concerning the FuG16ZY: I found some detailed data about FuG16ZY and I think you are right: in AFN-2 only bearings to beacons indicated: https://www.cdvandt.org/Fugb-S-XVI-Z-ZY.pdf The reason for the confusion is that the german wording "Zielflug" means directly translated "target flight", but in reality with this only direction finding to beacons is possible. In respect of IL-2 GB and the limited radio / radar functions I think it is an alternative, to provide the pilots at least in a bit more realistic way with informations, better than moving symbols on the map. And it could have some historical context when used as a simulation of the FuG 120 Bernhardine System: https://www.nonstopsystems.com/radio/hellschreiber-modes-other-hell.htm#intro
