RelentlessJPMoney Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 I got new MFG Crosswind rudder pedals. They are plugged into a USB port directly into the PC (no hub). They work in other games. The input is picked up by the MFG Configurator software (v2.15). Input is picked up by windows 11 (game controllers interface). When I launch Il-2 (Steam) it seems to indicate it recognizes there is a new controller. But when I go to key mapping it won’t pick up the inputs from the pedals at all. Any insights into what to do?
cardboard_killer Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 @RelentlessJPMoney Sometimes IL has a problem with initial recognition. Make sure you are using the full range of motion with the peddles in the mapping section, then close IL, re-open it, and try again. Not sure why this happens, but it seems fairly common the first time you add peddles. If that doesn't work, post here again.
Aapje Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 In general you need to push the pedals to the limits each time you connect them, because otherwise the calibration will be off.
RelentlessJPMoney Posted December 17, 2024 Author Posted December 17, 2024 Thanks @cardboard_killer and @Aapje for the advice. So your suggestions didn’t work, but did give me a starting point. I eventually found that I had to go into the “devices” file in the input folder and literally add the pedals as a device (after first wiping out the whole input folder and starting fresh in order to get the right syntax for the pedals). I restored my input backup with the pedals added as a device and that did the trick. Now even though the game will recognize the pedal axis movements, it WON’T recognize the toe breaks, which are separate inputs. Not quite sure yet how to get that to work. The pedal axis is obviously the most important part, but man am I disappointed in il-2 with this experience. I bought the pedals primarily for this game, and the fact that they were plug and play for Strike Fighters 2 (a 20 year old game) is embarrassing.
Hanu Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 (edited) How many USB controllers you have? In IL-2 there is a hard limit for connected controllers. You could test by de-plugging some and trying to map MFG's again. I don't think the problem is MFG's, but the way IL-2 recognizes those. I have MFG's and the work without problems in IL-2 and elsewhere. Edited December 17, 2024 by Hanu

I have MFG's and the work without problems in IL-2 and elsewhere. I have a mouse, keyboard, joystick, pedals, and TrackIR (which I think counts as a controller input in this context). The weird thing is that the axis for the pedals now works, but just not the toe breaks. If it was an input issue with too many controllers connected, you’d think the axis wouldn’t work. czech693 Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 In the Settings screen make sure the toe brakes are assigned to the same joystick number as the pedals. In mine the pedals are joystick_0, axis p, and the toe brakes are joystick_0, axis x and y.

Sounds alarmingly painful for a gaming controller, but the underlying problem must be causing newcomers to vote with their feet. The main obstacle to reporting this issue would be providing the mandatory screenshot.
