Hi all,

i have been playing with the channel map again in RoF recently and find it a great pity we wont be getting a Il-2 version. But, we do have the Normandy map, which is pretty similar.. The only issue really is all the airfields are WW2 airfields..

So, the question is.. has anyone tried replacing all the WW2 airfields on the Normandy with WW1 versions? I know there are lots of WW1 airfields missing on the Normandy map, but its better than nothing... Thoughts?

Not something you can do in the mission editor.

Isnt it? You could delete airfields(or at least the buildings/hangars) in RoF.. have they changed that?

You can easily delete and replace any structures and buildings at the airfields in the Full Mission Editor; if you want to change/delete the runways - it should also be possible through "surface editing" although more complicated.

S! @Flashy,

Many airfields on the Normandy map are regular (earth and grass) like WW1.
Or, with the surface editing new app, you could re-work most airfields to have them more like the WW1 ones.

The only problem with this solution is that people playing in your new map must have the MODs on.

Hope this can help.

Actually that's incorrect. You do not have to have Mods on to use altered surface textures, but you do have to have the unpacked and altered surface.dat texture.tex and texturesXX.tini files with the missions.

There is no reason you can't delete the paved airfields and replace them with grass WWI airfield textures. In fact, you could copy and paste or import the surface textures from the Western Front map to the Normandy map.

I'm not sure how this works in multi-player, but it certainly does work in single player. AethelreadUnraed wrote a tutorial on it which is posted in this forum

Thanks for that info... my only worry would be for multi-player... since most of my PvP missions are multi-player.
But this could be fun to test in a single-player mission or for a scripted campaign.

Yes this is what I was thinking basically, just get rid of the concrete runways and taxi ways and WW2 hangars and add the stuff for WW1 airfields and it should work. It would be a lot of work though.. not sure how many airfields are on the Normandy map, but its not a small number..

The inclusion of those files to make it work in mods off mode is pretty cool - that is a change from when I tried to do some stuff with the surface edit about 5 years ago and it would only work in mods on - very cool!
I am not sure we even need to import anything from the western front map though because most airfields have a layer which allows planes to take off (I think there is a checkbox marked "solid" on the layer which enables this), so as long as you leave this layer and remove all the concrete stuff, it should still work as an airfield for WW1 planes..

I was thinking more of for use in single player missions, but I guess we need to check if it will work in MP as well.. there is no point going to all the trouble of making a WW1 Normandy map if it cant be used in MP..

S! I might have some time this holiday... I might try to modify a few airfields and see how it looks.
We should do as Combat Box did for the Normandy map: try to have a few people ready to work a specific section of the map and then have someone regroup all of the sectors in one major modify Normandy map.

Any ideas where (what sectors) of the Normandy map you would like to modify a few airfields? Just for a first test!

If you enable texture editing, the easiest way to modify the file would be to delete the entire airfield texture as a group and copy/paste a Western Front airfield texture in the same location. The concrete base texture would be included, but a bit difficult to separate from the WWII textures. You can't group and import like normal groups, but you can select, close out the map and paste into another map.

I think you would have to do it 1 airfield at a time, save, close and repeat.
