Monty_Thrud Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Trying to use this for the first time in Tank Crew for a Camera to follow 4 Tanks whilst attacking targets for a set time then for the player to be put in his Tank and begin Mission...have read all available threads, newest is of 2020 with a mission file that no longer works(just get error loading mission)... Anyone help with a simplified explanation of how to use these as there is nothing in the Manual?...
Billsponge1972 Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I don't know how to do that either but would like to find out. There are some user-made campaigns that have missions with what you're looking for. You could open up one of those missions in the mission editor and search for the external camera and study the MCU structure. I have learned a lot by doing this with things that confuse me in the manual.
IckyATLAS Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 What do you mean by following 4 tanks: 1) Camera remains fixed but will be locked to one of the tanks and then it will follow the tank and keep the tank in view. So if the tank moves across the camera field of view the camera will rotate to keep it centered. But as the tank will continue going further and further from the camera it will become smaller and smaller. You cannot lock to a group of tanks. Choose the leader as an ex. 2) Camera is fixed to the tank and moves with the tank. To my knowledge 1) can be done, 2) no. The only way to have a 2) equivalent result is during the game to go through Left Shift F5 (this will scroll the External fixed cameras for friendly objects) until you have the tank that suits you and then the tank being selected you can use the F3 (flyby type) view, or you can make an ALT F2 and switch through the cameras that are fixed on different parts of that tank. Beware though that if you go back to to the players plane or tank with F1 then you have to find again the tank you wanted through F5. If the mission has tons of objects this may be long, even if only linked objects are scrolled.
Monty_Thrud Posted August 26, 2024 Author Posted August 26, 2024 Thanks peeps, I'm sure I've seen a camera moving through a mission then the Player appears in his Tank and starts the mission? But if not does anyone know how these MCUs, particularly "Camera Point" works?
Monty_Thrud Posted August 28, 2024 Author Posted August 28, 2024 Here IckyATLAS... https://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/57651-mcu-trigger-camera-point-use/ Unfortunately your Mission doesnt load in Mission Editor, just says error loading. I'm trying to have a Camera follow Tanks down a Road whilst they Attack Targets for a few minutes then the Player is put in his Tank to start an Attack on incoming Tanks. I've seen it in a video of a Camera view move slowly over moving Tanks and turn a corner to show the path to take for the Player. Thanks.

Here is a simple test mission to show you how to place the camera points, however you are going to have an issue with one part of what you want to do (#2). When you start a mission as the player in a tank, you always start parked. You have to enter the tank in first person so your vehicle will be sitting still until the camera places you in the "cockpit". If you have any questions on how this is connected to the player or lead vehicle, let me know. Maybe you can make it work by following the formation of AI tanks as they attack and then activate the player tank next to the action area as an independent formation. Edit, I fixed it. Jaegermeister Posted August 28, 2024 Posted August 28, 2024 (edited) Also if you want to make the transitions from different cameras smoother, ie. stationary to trailing camera and then to the cockpit camera you should match the altitude, angle and distance with the first camera operator and camera. You can also add a moving camera in between the trail camera and the cockpit camera to change smoothly from your observation point into the cockpit. Play around with it and how it looks in the mission. You can also pan the view if you are recording tracks. Edited August 29, 2024 by Jaegermeister 1

That was 4 years ago, and there have been so many updates. Could be that it does not work anymore. But I confirm it worked very well. To see how a camera is used as a First Person Motion (it works compatible with the last update), you can play the mission 04 Scramble of my Kuban Wall campaign. You can download the campaign as separate single missions here: The camera functionality has not been really well implemented by the devs. It is acceptable but it is impossible to make it as good as you can have it in FPS games. You will not be able to see the code in the mission so I have put it here as a group of that functionality. You can import it and see how it is designed.
