Wage_Slave Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 Hello all, I was give this kit for my birthday (I wasn't ready to turn 40 but that's life I guess) I thought this would be a good skin to make unless its already made. I have one question thou, what is that marking at the rear of the fuselage? The black circle with the white 'X' in the centre. It looks like a marking from the Spanish civil war (Condor Legion) 2
E69_julian57 Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 Hello @Have_Gun_Will_Travel I think it's about the 4th Staffel. 1

When it comes to the "X", this was seen originally on 1 Staffle, I Gruppe (J) LG2 aircraft. LG 2 were a demonstration wing with only I. Gruppe using fighters (II having Hs123s then JU87s and III having Do17s) I. (J) LG2 were redesignated I./JG77 in Jan 42. Given this, and designations of units in the wider the kit schems references (where they refer to staffles not the gruppe throughout), I think its more likley to be the 1st Staffle Badge of I./JG77 but I could be wrong as Im not very familair with JG77. I do not know the origins of the design for sure but the Staffelkapitain of 1 Staffle, I Gruppe (J) LG2 was Adolf Buhl who's first kiil was a Rata in the Spanish Civil War in July '37 so thats a possible likely source. The E7 at Biggin Hill "White 14" also carried the same markings, representing its time with 1./ LG2. This was the aircraft Hans Joachim Marseille was flying when he acheived his first victory in August 1940. It was at the time an E4 converted from an E3. It faired less well when flown by others and crashed landed in France in Sept 1940 where it was sent for repair and converted to an E7 before being dispatched to Russia and JG5. As White 7, in Aug 1942, it crash landed again and was forgotten about until the 90s when it was dragged out of a marsh and restored........before hitting a flagpole on take off in 2009 and having to be repaired once more! Adolf Brul was shot down and killed after, according to some accounts being abandoned by Marseille in an action on 23 Sept 1940. In the same action Marseille himself was shot down (some say by Robert Stanford Tuck). The fallout of this and other incidents resulted in Marseille leaving LG2 in October 1940. . 1 2

KOHTYP Posted January 3 Posted January 3 The historical photo shows that the lraska of the RLM 79 is randomly applied to the standard camouflage of the aircraft. This should be taken into account for drawing. 1
