I do not know if I am allowed to ask this, but I 'll ask the question and if the admins do not allow it, it's OK.

I installed on my PC, which runs Windows 10, IL2 Sturmovik from the original 2001 CD. However the game crashes immediately. Can somebody help?

I'm not an admin but I cannot even image how the admins wouldn't allow you ask such a question... you simply purchased an official product and now you're trying to run it on your computer. I'm sure there's nothing wrong with that.

Congratulations, you possess a vintage collector object. Now my advice is that you keep it on one shelf so that you can boast you possess one original IL-2 Sturmovik.

In my humble opinion, this is normal. I may be wrong but I think that the game is too old, thus its installation/launch files cannot be read by modern operating systems.

Even in the case you manage to install this original 2001 CD, you couldn't get the dynamic campaigns nor the TrackIR compatibility, at least not until having installed several consecutive patches. Not to mention the Pacific aircraft and Pacific maps, or the later maps and flyable aircraft. For example, the 2006 compilation is version 4.07... and this would mean  that you'd need to install plenty of consecutive patches, not making mistakes, and being sure that not a single patch is missing.

Excessively complicated.

The best you can do is to keep your 2001 CD as a collectible only and purchase the downloadable electronic version of the game at its latest official version, which is 4.13.4m (since 2017). After that you'll be free to unpatch it and mod it (see here https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,55464.0.html).

The game is quite cheap, it's only 10, 11 or 12 dollars. For example, you may buy it on Steam or on Gog:

On Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/15320/IL2_Sturmovik_1946/

On Gog: https://www.gog.com/en/game/il_2_sturmovik_1946

By the way, you can ignore the question I asked there. I simply checked that and the electronic version really is playable off line.

As @343KKT_Kintaro says is possible but for the price of 1946 and all the later developemt and dlcs it brings not really worth the hassle.

If you are deermined, the sas1946 site is probably the best scource of information.

Keep the disk as a collectors item. Buy the game (IL-2 1946) on Ste@m for 3 dollars, and mod it. There are so many planes and maps you will not be dissapointed + it runs on windows 10.

Dear friends,

Thank you all for your replies to my question! Much obliged! I think the 2001 Sturmovik PC CD will become an exhibit! :)

Regarding IL2 Sturmovik 1946:

I have this game also in PC DVD format and I managed to install it on my PC and it's running. It is version 4.07 and in Ubisoft's site only the patch 4.08 is available. In Steam it is mentioned that they provide 1946 with patch 4.12, which, they say, is a community patch. My questions may be silly but I am really a beginner in mods and communities:

1. Who made all these mods/patches after 4.08?

2. Is it safe to install all these patches?

3. What do they offer to the game experience? Please note, that, although I have purchased IL2 Sturmovik (2001) & IL2 Sturmovik 1946 (2006) (back in '00s, good old days!...), I haven't played them much and I am a rookie in flying. Will all these mods/patches after 4.08 offer something to me?

4. In 1946 I use the quick mission builder and, although in the settings I choose "take-off & landing", I start the mission flying! Have you noticed that? Why is there no take-off?

Thank you,

yannism
