Colossal update.

Im curious about the new options to tune the careers difficulty!

What is it exactly?

You can set all the difficulty options to Random now, so that way you're never quite sure of what sort of opposition you'll end up facing.

Not sure, sorry. :)

To be honest, a lot of pilots probably had trouble manoeuvring in WWI (poor training) and that might have assisted some aces in getting so many kills. However, things like marksmanship could be much higher (there was a patch in RoF where they were quite deadly). I think it is still possible to make a custom AI mod (for offline use) btw. I think it would make sense for most of the pilots to be quite poor except for the ace skill level... which could be made more deadly.

The problem is there is zero difference between the lowest or highest AI settings. There doesn't appear to be any AI programed to use the capabilities of a bi or tri plane. They don't even do basic loops and just forget about the more impressive things those light kites can do.

They seem uninterested in fighting, and they just fly in circles.

The developers should go online and see what players can do. Then program the AI to do those things.

Okay, thank you.

Just dont understand why not to implement such gameplay for C47 if there's already a working model and technology.

So that means, with that random setting, in one mission I could encounter enemy aces but the next it would be rookies?

Any tips for setting up gliders in the mission editor, for takeoffs?

The tow rope should be 95-99 meters long when the C-47 begins to pull, so place the C-47 and the glider about 115 m apart (measured between their centers). It snaps if there was too much slack and the C-47 gains too much momentum when it starts to pull the glider.

You have the glider towing missions for C-47 in the career mode, just not for being in the glider itself.

Not long after he passed away peacfully in his sleep. These were the greatest generation of us by far.

Do you have a photo of his family taken during the war? If he haven't met your mother at that time yet, maybe a photo of his parents family? We could add it as default cockpit photo to the glider if you wish - a photo he would have had with him there in reality.

the western front map shows Paris, but on the place where Paris should be is no Paris, only grass….☹️

Are there any plans put Paris on it’s place ?

Otherwise I have to hold back my Idea of a new collector vehicle…

Can now use my WW1 maps.

I thought it would be fun to fly a Mossie down the streets of Paris even if I've no tricolour to drop.  I managed to find the Ile de la Cite on the Seine but ....

I guess it was being rather optimistic to hope they would model a city so far from the front which no one would normally fly over.

Just flown in the IAR, man the pilot seat is terrible. I had an incredible pain in my back and ass when I sat in the cockpit.

I looked to my seat and saw that all the upholstery is missing, just raw metal. ?

Was it really like this?

Yes, that's what should happen. It also affects the density of enemy and friendly flights, ground units along the front lines, and AAA coverage.

The problem is all AI pilots fly as if they're poorly trained. In PWCG there are AI pilots classed as aces and veterans who fly and shoot no better than the pilots with a few hours flying experience. McCudden, Mannock, no better than the rest. I had standard career with Jasta 11 supposedly the elite German fighter unit of WW1, most of the pilots would have been at least at veteran level.  My AI pilots must have been recruited from Hamburg's street sweepers for all the use they were as fighter pilots. They very rarely manage to shoot down an enemy plane. Last mission two of them collided. So the answer you say is a mod. Not the responsibility of the developers to improve AI?

Devs count on us mission builders to create the city of Paris I imagine. After having simulated the Mount St. Michel for the Normandy map   (which is really fine from afar)  I will see if I can create an Eiffel tower. Interesting challenge.

Paris and it’s industrial complexes should be targeted for long range bomber mission in career mode

But will all enemies be ace or all recruit or will it be random within the mission. But with higher proportion of ace or recruit etc?

Paris isn't real, it's just some wooden fronts on a Hollywood back lot.

Yes, I have just seen this. Or you can set it to enemy superiority, parity, or enemy inferiority.

That is pretty nice. I will try to go all random on my MiG3 career and see how it goes.

Awesome job dev team. You deserve every bit of trust.

Mmm, not sure about that. I didn't get the chance to examine any mission files during testing with this new feature.

No howitzers, but jeeps, troops, and cargo can be carried.

Quite. The truth is Paris was moved to a secret location during WW1 to confuse the Hun and avoid damage. That location was never revealed and is still hush-hush to this day. It was moved back to its correct position in the 1920's. It is now regarded as one of the best wartime acts of subterfuge in the 20th century and, as I understand it, Netflix is making a mini-series about it, although the true location will remain secret. So ICGS got it right.

If only it were that simple. There's a reason AI is pretty terrible in all air combat games, unless they use a very simple FM so they are essentially "cheating." Even then they aren't that difficult or pull off anything like humans do.

Right now they don't have any programming except fly in circles. They don't seem to even have programming to press the fire button most of the time.

If nothing else they should just transfer the ww2 AI to the ww1. It too is

terrible. But at least they can shoot you down if you get overwhelmed.

Noticed the two glider pilots in the short movie in the update both died from snapped necks upon landing.  Think I'll pass.

You can set up the Waco for a 'start from runway' free flight in the QMB, but the AI C-47 just sits there. Presumably because he doesn't know where you want to go...

Doesn't seem to be tied down. I hope they set the handbrake. ?

2023-12-19-23-59-25.jpg

If they won't tow me to France, I'll fly there on my own. QMB airstart over Kent at 20,000ft should do it. ?

If anyone has a working single player runway takeoff mission, it'd be much appreciated.

Took the IAR up in my Stalingrad Early mission.  I like the way it handles, but it's desperately in need of an R1830 Twin Wasp with a Hamilton Standard constant speed prop.

Really.

I was getting ready for work when the patch was released. I only had a chance to fly the iar about ten minutes, with the arrow keys.

Things I noticed.

Extremely precise model geometry. Superb textures. A very good selection of skins, covering all versions and times, from 1941 to 1945.

 Superb cockpit.

High rate of fire of the machine guns, both light and heavy. I didn't shoot at anything but I'm very curious how much damage the 13mm guns do, with that high rate of fire.

Can't say anything about flight model, since I flew it with arrow keys.

For me this is a great Christmas present.

Thank you very much all involved in it's development and testing.

The model is really good, there can be no doubt.  It's just a very "busy" thing to fly, task saturation is a real issue.  Will take a LOT of stick time to get on top of the manual prop.  The AI seem to do well in it though.

Thanks, team. Looking fwd to flying it this week! ?

Love the detail of the cowling and cowl flaps. There are no gaps between cowl flaps segments and it maintains a continous skirt around the cowling, even with it fully open.

Lovely mechanics.

You have to launch a red flare to take off, as the HUD text says. ?

Anyone haveing CTD issues with this update?  Have had three in about 1 1/2 hour in the Flying Circus carrier mode.  Screen freeze then CTD.  First time having this issue for me in BOX.  I have a 4090, 13900k with 64 GB DDR5 running at a constant 120FPS in 4k so I do not think it is my system.

Just happened again for the fourth time.

All my drivers are up to date and I am having no issues with other games/software.  Nothing is over clocked.  I did restart my computer, made no difference.  IL2 was working perfectly pre patch.
