Varibraun Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 (edited) From @dburne link above Wow...3840x3840! If true, it is easy to see why Varjo just cut the Aero price in 1/2 and Pimax announced $800 trade-in. Interesting times in the VR world. Edited September 22, 2023 by Varibraun 1 1

It would be nice if they started offering sales to the U.S. support. 1
=LD=Bulldog* Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Was very impressed with the Pico 4 albeit a dead pixel. Will see what the Pico 5 is all about!
Charger_ Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Happy days! All we need is that sweet sweet DP cord.
chiliwili69 Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 WOW, WOW! I will buy them (5 and 5 Pro Max) as soon as they will become available!! wireless is nice and 2nd gen chips has a better bandwidth to decode and 2560x2560 seems reasonable On the other hand the Eyetracking+DFR and a 3840x3840 sounds mindblowing as well. Perhaps we don´t need to wait for Deckard any more! And finally this: I think it is the first headset to incorporate that. Many people (me included) are not exactly symmetrical with the IPD. 1
56RAF_phoenix56 Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 Actually this is really bad news for il2 VR flyers: only the highest resolution model of Pico 5 has a DP port (all the others will be limited by Gigabit network at best). This means that the only real contenders for PC VR in il2 are: Big Screen Beyond @ 2560x2560 Varjo Aero @ 2880x2720 Pimax Crystal @ 2880x2880 And we'll all be locked into absolute-top-of-the-range PC hardware if we want to fly VR. 56RAF_phoenix

The current limit of the Quest2, QuestPro and Pico4 is the decoding limit of the XR2-1st-gen chip. For the HEVC it is 150 Mbps. We need to see how the XR2-2nd-gen improve that in the Quest3 and Pico5. I was also a big defender of the PCVR with DP cable until I tested the Pico4 and the QuestPro. Have you tested them? You should also know that the three devices mentioned by you (Aero, Crystal, BSB), all of them use also a compression technique called DSC (look here) to reduce the bandwidth required by the cable. This DSC is a "human visually lossless compression" designed to don´t notice any difference by a human eye wiht an uncompressed image.

But the question is, will you finally keep one of what you buy? I would consider if offered in the states. Doubt that is gonna happen.

I not so sure about near-lossless compression like DSC. But lossy compression like HVEC is bad for distant contacts. I'm happy to be proved wrong, but basic sums suggest: 8 bits Red x 8 bits Green x 8 bits Blue x 2560x2560x2 (Pico 5 base) x 90Hz / 3 (DSC compression) = 201 Gbits/s. I'm sure there's plenty of room for lossless compression here, but that's a lot more than Gigagbit networking (<500 Mbits/s) and even DP 1.3 (32.4 Gbits/s). Also, squad mates have tried the Pico 4 and ditched it because of low image quality. 56RAF_phoenix Edited September 23, 2023 by 56RAF_phoenix56 typo

Still have mine, however been boxed up in it's box for quite some time now. 1 hour ago, chiliwili69 said: ? , Only if they are better than my current Index! Come to think of it, that gives me an idea. I may have to hook it up here soon and give the Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries VR Mod a go with it. The overall FOV increase especially in the vertical would be nice for that game. And while the graphics are "ok'ish" they are nothing to write home about so viewing through the Index probably won't be so bad. May have to try that later on in the week just for kicks and grins, already have Steam VR so should not be much issue. Just hook it up and go I reckon. Edited September 23, 2023 by dburne 1 1
chiliwili69 Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 BTW, I also have seen in the table the the Quest3 and Pico5 will both support the new codec AV1 with the XR2 2nd gen chip. This new AV1 codec need on average about 25% less bitrate for the same quality than a HEVC (H265) codec. So, for the same bitrate offers better quality images. We will be able to see this soon with the new Quest3.
