N°1 - DUGUAY-TROUIN (Updated)

 

September 6, 1944 LIBERATION OF BEAUNE

The five tanks of the first platoon set off along the Tailly road, with the Duguay-Trouin tank in the lead and the tanks of the other platoons further back.
The DUGUAY-TROUIN was hit by two shells from a German anti-tank gun some 1,200 meters to the east of Meursault.
The three occupants of the turret are killed: Sub-Lieutenant Antoine Cattanéo, Brigadier-Chef Alexis Petitbon (gunner), René Delaporte (loader).
Brigadier-Chef André Vidal (pilot) and co-pilot Antoine Tortosa were unhurt.
The other four tanks in the platoon bombarded the enemy gun, whose servants fled.  

 

The DUGUAY-TROUIN is currently preserved in Dijon.

Ballersdorf (Haut-Rhin) November 23, 1944

“Hello Joseph 1! I'm coming to the village” triumphantly announces Maréchal des Logis (sergeant) Friess... At the same moment, tragedy struck... A brutal and precise cannonade...

Two shells hit the undercarriage of the DUQUESNE. The immobilized tank continued to fire until a third shell set it ablaze.

The DUPLEIX is also hit. Maréchal des Logis (sergeant) Guermont, tank commander, and Brigadier-Chef (master corporal) Fernand Chipeaux, gunner, lay stricken in the turret. Cuirassier (private) Aymard, the driver, nonetheless maneuvered to turn back, carrying out his platoon leader's order. Three more shells and the tank burns... The wounded Aymard managed to free himself from his driving position and joined his comrades Blanco and Durieux, also wounded and already out of the tank.

Two shells hit the undercarriage of the DUQUESNE. The immobilized tank continued to fire until a third shell set it ablaze: evacuation was then inevitable... Only the driver and assistant driver manage to make it to the side of the road: Brigadier (corporal) Robinet, gunner, and cuirassier (private) Mereu, loader, are killed by two new shells before they can leave their battle stations, while Maréchal des Logis Friess is mortally wounded by an anti-tank shell as he jumps to the ground.

MONTBRUN

 

April 7, 1945 Attack on the Wolfartweier factory near Durlach (Germany).

 

Platoon Pinoteau sets off on the road from Durlach to Ettlingen with two infantry sections on tanks and two sections on foot.

Before reaching the first factory buildings, the infantry sections were dismounted and the advance continued without reaction.

Arriving at the first houses, the lead tank, the MONTBRUN, after firing three cannon shots, was hit by a 75 PAK 40 anti-tank and burst into flames: three killed (Aimé FILLY, tank commander, Brigadier (corporal) Henri KLEIN, Chasseur (Private) THUILLEUR), one wounded. The anti-tank weapon is not spotted and will engage the other tanks, which have to take cover.
