kestrel79 Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Almost 4 years ago before our first child was born I built my first new PC since probably 2011 or so. I also got a Oculus Rift S to try VR and am totally hooked on VR, there's no going back. Baby no. 2 is due end of August, so I'm debating another PC build. Or maybe just an upgrade since components (ie Video Cards) are still crazy expensive. The goal is to play VR with pretty high fps in DCS, IL2, MSFS2020. Here's a quick and dirty build what does everyone think? $2200 seems insane for a PC for me personally, but when video cards are $700-800 I guess that's the deal. Some thoughts...64GB of RAM overkill? Or is 32 fine for now? Should I wait for the rumored 16GB skew 4060 video cards to come out, or splurge and go with a 4070ti or 4080? I'm not a big tweaker or overclocker, so fastest cpu for simming and VR without having to mess around with a lot of that stuff (for now maybe in the future). https://newegg.io/f7b026c
dburne Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 For just IL-2 32GB is fine - throw DCS and/or MSFS2020 in there I would go for 64. VR - if anyway you can get the 4090 GPU - otherwise the closest you can get to it.
NiiranenVR Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 About OC I had before and now an Asus ROG MB , and they have a ' 1 click' system - then it's OC'ed So then and now my CPU is around the 5 hz
Soarfeat Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 (edited) Hey Kestrel, This case is what I finally bought after much researching the best " affordable " case for cooling/size/etc.. Lancool 216 --- may save you a few bucks plus it is excellent for keeping components cool, you don't need any extra fans the three provided do excellent job ! I was thinking of adding two top fans however after seeing reviews on youtube found efficiency better as is. Also, I would recommend if getting the 4070TI to just go with the ( non-OC ) $799 ones, the extra price you are paying is not worth the overclock boost they come with. I have the Asus GTX 4070 TI. It is the non-OC and am quite happy with it ( however I am a non-VR person at this time ). You may look at this also for a cpu cooler cpu cooler Gamers Nexus. Just some thoughts that may save a few extra bucks !!! I wish you well with the growing family !!!! Cheers---sf--- Edited May 12, 2023 by Soarfeat extra
Voyager Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 For VR would it be worth looking at used 3090's? Vram is becoming something of an issue as I recall.
kestrel79 Posted May 12, 2023 Author Posted May 12, 2023 -For RAM I thought maybe just going with 2 x 16GB modules for now, and then expand to 64GB later with another 2 x 16GB sticks. -Thanks for the case recommendation Soarfeat, that's a little cheaper than my last build's case which I love and was going to buy again for this build. The Meshify series has been great for me. Good looks and quiet. - I thought about maybe used 3080TI or 3090, if I can find one from a seller I trust. But a 4070TI brand new was my top choice for a new card right now, unless one of the 4060 cards due to come out seems solid. I'm ok with getting a better card in a couple years.
kestrel79 Posted June 9, 2023 Author Posted June 9, 2023 Someone local is selling a used EVGA 3090 FTW. These are still good cards right? Hard to pass up 24GB of RAM on a video card.

kestrel79 Posted June 9, 2023 Author Posted June 9, 2023 Yes but I'm trying to build my new PC for the cost of 1 4090 Ok sounds good! Too soon for 64GB of RAM should I just stick with 32?

Picchio Posted June 11, 2023 Posted June 11, 2023 (edited) @kestrel79 I'm selling some items (the beautiful Sliger Cerberus, a complete set of Noctua fans, a NH-C14S cooler and the great Corsair SF750). Throw me a PM if you're interested. Edited June 11, 2023 by Picchio
kestrel79 Posted June 12, 2023 Author Posted June 12, 2023 Sorry I bought my stuff last night! Haven’t been on here in a few days.
kestrel79 Posted June 12, 2023 Author Posted June 12, 2023 Ok here's what I decided to go with. Brand names are all brands I've used in the past on previous builds and have had no issues so decided to stick with them. This is a refresh of my build almost 4 years ago to the date. Intel i5 13600ks cpu Noctua ds-15s cpu cooler Gigabyte z790 Aorus Elite AX motherboard Gskill Ripjaws 2x32GB RAM Corsair 850w psu Fractal Design Define 7 case Samsung 980 pro 2TB ssd Only thing I haven't bought yet is a gpu. There's a couple 3090s available used for decent prices, I think I'm going to try and snag one of those. Either that or go with a mid tier 4000 series brand new like the 4070ti or 4070. The 24GB of vram on a 3090 seems appealing to me over the mid tier 4000 series cards. What do you guys recommend for playing in VR with my Rift S? Keep in mind Trying to spend around $700-800 on a gpu tops.
Voyager Posted June 13, 2023 Posted June 13, 2023 If you think you might want to play with local AI models, definitely get the 3090, especially if it is a good price. The vram limitation of the 4070 is very harse there. The vram will probably become an issue on future games as well, even if it is fine for Il-2. And personally, if you think you might want to do Il-2 in VR, a 3090 will probably be better in long run, especially as headset resolutions increase.
kestrel79 Posted June 21, 2023 Author Posted June 21, 2023 Ok new PC is built! Haven't had time yet to hook up my Oculus Rift S and try out IL2 in VR, that's still coming. Looking forward to turning more graphics on in VR for IL2, DCS, MSFS2020, iRacing. Intel i5 13600 cpu Noctua nh-d15s cpu cooler Gigabyte z790 Aorus Elite AX motherboard 2 x 32GB GSkill Ripjaws RAM Gigabyte 4070ti graphics card Samsung 980 Pro 2TB ssd Corsair 850w psu Fractal Define 7 case Windows 11 First time using Windows 11...ick. Tried to make it look like W10 as much as I could. But it runs pretty snappy. Might have to look up some tweak guides.
kestrel79 Posted July 24, 2023 Author Posted July 24, 2023 I've had very limited time to play with the new PC unfortunately...and we're getting close to baby time. Probably just a couple more weeks. I did install IL2 on there, and loaded it up with no joystick or throttle installed yet, no VR and just see how smooth it was cracked out max graphics and it looked pretty awesome. But until I have time to hook up ally usb devices for flying and VR I won't know for sure.
cardboard_killer Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Dude, in another two weeks you'll be a generation behind! 1
BOO Posted July 25, 2023 Posted July 25, 2023 I wish id have had two kids - i could have sold the least favorite one for a decent GPU. As it stands I got one who's absence I suspect would be quickly missed by his mother..... 2
