Question about canopy Spitfire

Common opinion has it that it's a 'knock-out' panel that can be punched through in case the actual canopy becomes obscured with oil or dirt or damage.

Hi @Sayan,

According to Dr Alfred Price, the push out panel introduced on the Mk I Spitfire. Was made to equalise the pressure inside with outside, to aid opening the canopy at high speed if required

Cheers,

Good afternoon. I doubt it.

After all, it had an emergency reset of the cockpit canopy

Hi Sayan,

Yes you would be right to doubt it, since as it turns out Dr Alfred Price is mistaken in the following.

It turns out that the knock out panel, was a measure to aid fixing an obscured view, as described by @Raptorattacker.

"On the port side of the sliding hood is an oval knock-out panel secured by studs and spring clips, for use in the event of the view through the windscreen becoming obscured."
