I don’t know.

On one hand, I don’t want to wait a full 10+ months after launch to get a card like the RTX30, series, on the other hand I’m thinking “do I really ‘need’ to replace my 3090 hybrid?”

Seems like it just comes down to whether the 3090 is providing you with the experience you’re happy with. My 3080 is right on the edge of that. I have to make too many compromises in vr resolution and game settings.

My local Microcenter had some stock this morning and I ended up with this!

Not sure if I’ll go ahead and install it. Haven’t done much research into this, but the other one they had was Asus Tuf OC, and knowing for sure it will NOT fit into my O11 Dynamic, I got this one.

LOL, looks like that will do the trick! Wish I had a microcenter near me...

Yeah, they’ve been the best with all the GPU craziness that played out the last several years.

Amazing buy for only $12 ?

Congratulations, You will notice a big uplift in performance when you get it all up and running.

? I was wondering who’ll “see” it first ?

I’m trying to make sure it’ll fit into my O11 Dynamic, before even I contemplate opening the box.

Didn't want to start a new thread for this but I am also planning an upgrade from my 5800x and 3070. With my current settings fps is ok with my quest 2 but I'm looking for a smoother experience

looking to pair a 5800x3d with a 4080 or should go the full hog and get a 4090? It would mean I would have to get a new PSU as well (currently have a newish 850w)

I know the next AMD chips are right around the corner but geeez its expensive.

Hi I have a 5800x3d with a 4080 and so far I am very happy with it. I only play single player and find I can run at a fairly stable 90 fps (reverb g2) with high/extreme settings and ss at 100% with the occasional dip down to mid 60's fps in very high Ai situations.

I still find msaa a little taxing with extreme settings which is where the 4090 will probably help.

Price wise I payed £1199 for my 4080 and the closest 4090 was another £400 on top (stupid money) but i upgraded from a 1080ti which i bought second hand over three years ago so this how i justified spending this crazy money LoL.

Indeed. I have a 3080 running at 75% in open composite. All in game settings on ultra. NIS upscaling and motion reprojection on. Using a reverb G2. Interior cockpit is razor sharp.

I get a rock steady 45 FPS in all but the most demanding dogfights. Very happy with that performance. In terms of speed in milliseconds I think I'm hitting the 60-70FPS mark, but 45FPS is great in terms of smoothness. get the occasional ghosting when planes fly past at high speed but TBH its barely noticeable.

I've never enjoyed flight-siming so much.

Cheers

I know the next AMD chips are right around the corner but geeez its expensive.

I have the 5800X3D and a RTX 4090 and have had no issues with using a MSI 850 Watt PSU

The 5800X3D CPU is quite a power efficient chip. Also, my PSU only had three power cables available so I am only utilising 3 of the 4 sockets into one GPU power cable connector. This limits my GPU to 450 Watts but you get very little performance uplift for all that extra power when running 600 Watts.

So, in short, you should be fine with your existing 850W PSU with a 5800X3D and RTX 4090 unless you want to overclock the GPU to the max.

Re: 4080 or 4090, in my case the price difference was only 10 - 15% between the two depending on which 4080 you were considering. So, I went for the 4090.
In either instance, you need a case large enough to accommodate a large card and clearance to fit the GPU power connecter without an excessive bend in it.

IMO, the 4090 is the one to go for if your budget can stretch to it.
If 4080 prices drop substantially or you can get a bargain you may find the 4080 a better choice.

Hey, GPUs have to be decided based on the VR devices resolution.

For the Aero, yes, go to the 4090.

For the Quest2 anything above a 3080 will be plenty. So, no doubt, go for the 4080.

I am on an Index with a 3080 and today I could buy a 4090 if I wanted. But a 4090 will give zero improvement over my current Index & 3080.

Well, I do think this is going to be the last major monolithic GPU.

Rumors on Blackwell are nVidia is looking for a similar performance jump as from the 3090 to 4090, but it will probably take a reticle limit TSMC 3N chip to do it. And building it could easily cost double what even this monster does.

Once AMD gets its drivers sorted out, graphics performance is going to commoditize rapidly.

Feels like we're at the tail end of the muscle car era in GPUs.

Because for high resolution VR it is still the difference between 45 fps and 60 fps, or 60 fps and 90fps.

And there still is a big difference between 20ppd, 30ppd and 40ppd in VR.

Seems like AMD hasn’t gotten their drivers fully sorted out in ~10 years.  I wish they could so they’d be a more viable alternative to team green. Many folks including me are afraid to buy a AMD gpu. They seem to make good hardware that doesn’t always work with this game or that or perform as well as they should at vr resolutions.

Bring on the screaming Ferraris, never been a big fan of true muscle cars anyway. If this trend goes on, we’re going to be replacing our motherboards with graphics boards with CPU sockets soon ?

Yeah. On the other hand, it does look like they've finally recognized that it's a problem and are putting money and people into solving it. It's just going to take some time and a bit of slowing down in radical architecture changes....

Think more minivans that can do what the old muscle cars could do, than screaming Ferraris.

I'm not saying it will be a bad thing, but it will definitely be the end of an era.

My cable mod quad 8-pin to 12V pcie GPU cable just got delivered. Unfortunately, O11D vertical mount is not going to ship until mid February.

I think I’ll have an “open” case for a while. ?

My very simple summary, the 4090 rocks!  I've upped settings in IL-2, MSFS, and DCS.  Incredible. Plus, this card runs a lot cooler than my former 3090FE, (which I had  undervolted).  Completely satisfied with it.

GPU clock at 2820MHz (at peak), and GPU temp 50-51C, memory temp at 52C, hotspot at 58C.

edit: (when I'm gaming, via MSI Afterburner, I do set a bit more aggressive fan speeds.  To me, the compute sounds don't matter since I'm wearing my G2 headset, and usually can't hear anything else (including Wifey-Pooh....)

Come on Reverb G3!!!  ? ?

According to a report yesterday by the VR Flight Sim Guy HP is getting out of the VR headset business. If true there won’t be a G3 which would truly be sad news for us. This follows a lot of rumors about it late last year. A G2 with upgraded lenses would be an easy and probably highly popular release but it sounds like it’s not to be.

I still haven’t run IL-2, but finally got everything together and had a chance to install the 4090 into the case.

The card is about 5 millimeters wider and about a centimeter shorter than the card it’s replacing (eVGA 3090 Hybrid), which barely fit the case installed directly on to the motherboard because of the hoses. I DDUed the old driver and shut down the pc, took the old card out.

The end of an era. :(

947A3654-21EC-4E81-B10D-D8D0891A2180.thumb.jpeg.561491341d77e912eec208f40ed8859d.jpeg

So I needed a riser kit, which was the hardest to find and took the longest to get here. I installed the kit in the case, not rock solid, but solid enough. riser cable is very stiff, so it needed to be plied into place not to push the card forward once installed.

Put the card on the riser mount.

And we’re off to the races. Simulated off course…

Had limited time to test it out, but everything seems stable for now. The only thing I did was to just set the bios/firmware switch to “Gaming”. Still not used to fans not running most of the time, but definitely runs cooler than the card it replaced. No numbers or anything, just going by the hot air it exhausts hitting my calf and ankle lol.

I haven’t looked into the 600W bios, nor MSI afterburner to tweak from the defaults yet, and not sure if I’ll ever flash the bios to the 600W bios at all, but I may look into setting a fan curve I feel comfortable with via afterburner. At some point, I will reverse the fans on the radiator, flip the radiator to the outside of the fan mount of the case and put in two more LL fans on top of the single fan below the radiator to make a push/pull on the GPU radiator. Not that it needs it, but for vanity as I like a consistent look and having three of the same LL fans visible from the outside with GPU radiator/fans concealed behind them is visually appealing to me, even I’m always in VR, and can’t even see the glass faced side of the pc even if I’m not in VR lol.

Really wish it was an eVGA card, but it is what it is.

Now, the big question:

Is it needed? Well, of course not!

Do I feel there’s an improvement over 3090? Yeah, I do. But, a) I haven’t run a full scenario where I see a big jump over 3090, b) Not even sure if the money spent vs performance gained proposition will be there (is it EVER there, when it comes to pc equipment? :) )

Especially having bought the 3090 before nVidia decided to pull one over to the AIBs and slashed the prices, so on my part, this is a horrible financial decision, but if we were sensible people we wouldn’t be building our own computers and running simulated WWII warbirds to begin with… I made peace with being “weird” :fly:

Thanks for sharing your install journey and initial thoughts on that age ole question of “was it worth it”. It’s a very steep price to pay particularly when the improvement isn’t amazing! On the other hand what’s the choice to get improved vr performance. It ain’t cheap!

Long live our weirdness.

@kissTheSky Cool build. The MSI Supreme Liquid is the one I ended up getting too. Showed up on Monday, and I've been working through all the install stuff in the evenings. Finally got all the hardware in last night, but still need to clean up the area, plug everything back in and power it on.

I've got a Fractal Meshify 2 XL case (my VR headset stand is on top of the PC case) so I've got more room to work, but the cables and tubes are still right up against the case side. Still, it all seems to fit without to much pressing.

Definitely looking forward to seeing how it performs. What with how the 5800X3D performs in everything I play, and how I expect this to do, I'm figuring this is probably the end of the upgrades for a long time for me.

Which is why I stay a generation behind on the most expensive stuff--GPUs and headsets.  I wait until the next gen comes out and buy the previous gen when its prices drop.  I have a 3080 with a Reverb G2; when the RTX 5000 series comes out, I might think about the 4090.
