Hardware requirements

So with the Visual Update / VR Support on the way nicely it is time to ask how much the hardware requirements have changed compared to pre-update. Asking because I want to be able to play in 1440P with as good settings as possible, no VR at the moment. From my experience CloD runs smoothly on not the biggest and baddest hardware as well. I ran i5 10600K/6700XT etc on a 1440P screen without issues.

So would an AMD  5800X3D or  Intel 12700K CPU be OK, with a 3070Ti / 6800XT or similar? Not willing to shell out an insane amount of money to get excess horsepower I do not need :) A system for 1440P :) Comments, ideas?

2D w/ 10600k and 3080, 1440p, was running just as fine in the beta as on stable for me. Barely any loss in performance.

And if you are already changing platform (AM4 or LGA1700 from what you listed), consider the 7600/7700 3D variants or 13th gen with DDR5. More future proof. Tbh I wouldn‘t change what you have now if not to go for something that will last more than 2 years.

I am running an AMD 5800 cpu with a lowly RX570 gpu on max settings on 32" 4k tv without issue. Do notice occasionally get near to London and it gives a twitch then runs ok. Also been running single player missions with 120+ planes in the air without any problems. So I would think at least for flat screen your spec up there would be more than adequate.

Thanks for the input! As I suspected, CloD still is hardware friendly. JHat, might consider AM5 platform, but again is the invested money vs gains that good. If you get an AM4 with 5800X3D and a decent GPU I bet CloD will run well into foreseeable future. Without VR that is, of course.

Back to finding parts again, got no computer at the moment :(

With emphasis on "is". Remember they are planning object rendering distance 10x farther then it is now. Who knows what an impact on CPU it will have

Disclaimer: no scientific analysis, just my own impressions.

In 2D still isn’t a big problem with a modern cpu. The longer draw distances sure take their toll, but it’s way more noticeable in VR.
In my experience it isn’t as bad as I imagined it would be, though.

I’d say building details is still the worst offender to tank your performance.

But let’s wait and see once it’s finished.

And @LLv34_Flanker, I hadn’t realized you have no system atm.
But still compare prices and see what’s best, also with current gen.
Prices for newer AMD CPUs have been dropping quite a bit.

If you can wait until February the situation should be a bit more clear even. Hopefully they will have released the newer X3D versions by then.

Right now the 5800X3D offers best value I’d say IF you already have an AM4 platform.
The price of the 7700X is basically the same as the 5800X3D with a bit less performance in some (older) games. 7600X is even cheaper and loses also only a bit in performance.

Mainboards are still a bit more expensive for AM5 but at least you won’t be blocking ALL upgrade paths for RAM and CPU. Haven’t researched enough the differences between the new chipsets. Went with Intel. Usually the B series are enough for most users.

You will be saving a bit with ram and the mainboard with AM4, but expect to update everything in the near future. Including mainboard (which for me is the worst part… it’s practically building a new system, compared to the drop ins for GPU, CPU and RAM).

If you decide to with AM5, you can get the 7600X or 7700X now and upgrade in the future if needed. Going by AMD history, even Zen5 or even 6 should still be good.

Or just go with intel 13th gen and DDR5 because you will probably have to change the mainboard anyways for a cpu upgrade in the future. Performance is a bit better with 13th gen.

And the new top tier GPUs in 1440p are already overkill. Even previous series (way cheaper if AMD). Given the benchmarks between 4080 and 7900XTX the latter is the obvious choice if you can’t grab a previous gen card for cheap, like 6950XT or 3080Ti/3090Ti (power draw…).

Size your PSU accordingly too. Things have become a bit insane. Even with AMD.

Please, anyone feel free to disagree with the above. That’s the way to get the best answer ?

2D should be no problem at all with any current set up.

I'm running CloD on a huge 4k TV with a Nvidia 2070 that is almost three

years old.

4k needs performance, but it is worth it.

You should disable extended clouds and extended shadows if your fps drop too much, they don't change much but cost a lot of performance.

A modern igpu in a ultra can run clod in 2d...vr is a hell of a different story.

Thanks for input, once again. I did not use extended shadows or high building details. There was basically no difference if using low or any higher setting. Except in performance.

I used to get latest and greatest hardwarefor gaming. Not anymore. Simply out of reach with insane prices out there. Instead settling with hardware powerful enough for CloD for example.

Unless you're going vr, it's just not needed.

It's difficult to know what is required for CoD as we have no real experience with this game in VR yet. Also it depends on what VR headset you use. On IL-2 great battles I get 80 fps with a rift s, 5600x and an rx6700. Most settings are high with some at medium. I'm not sure how this will compare to CoD. As said above higher specs than this are better for future proofing.

@Qcumberin general I feel CloD is less straining on the system than BoX. Even with AI around etc.

Looks like I am going for AM4/Intel equivalent instead of latest generation. Same applies to GPU. VR is still out of question, but in future will look again.

Happy holidays all :)
