SYN_Vander BENCHMARK - Poor GPU Test Results with GTX1080

I finally decided to try the benchmark and my GPU test results don't look good, hoping someone here has advice for me.

Systems Specs:

MSI Pro Z690-A DDR4, latest Bios

12700K overclocked to 4 P-Cores@5.2GHz, 7 P-Cores at 5.0GHz, 8 P-Cores@4.9GHz,  All E-cores at 4.0Ghz, undervolted by 0.050V

2x32GB DDR4 3333MHz C16  (overclocked from 3200 C16)

MSI GTX1080

IL-2 Version: 5.003

Il-2 Configuration: Followed settings on the SYN_Vander bechmark thread.

Windows 11 fully patched

NVIDIA Gaming Driver 527.56 (Latest)

Test was run with Single 4K monitor.

CPU Test: Frames: 7658 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 127.633 - Min: 113 - Max: 173

GPU Test: Frames: 2754 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 45.900 - Min: 39 - Max: 52

Ran GPU Test multiple times, always roughly the same numbers. Using Fullscreen mode didn't make a difference.

Comparing my results with other users (in the google spreadsheet), my CPU results look fine, but GPU test seems low. I didn't see any GTX1080 comparisons, but there were several GTX1080Ti results that were roughly double compared to mine. Granted the results were against older version of the game.

During the test GPU usage is pegged to 100%.

Any recommendations on whether my GPU results seem normal of I need to tweak something.

Thank you.

You need a new GPU. It is way underpowered for your current rig.

Yeah, watching 4080 and 4090, waiting for availability at close to MSRP. Already have G2 Reverb waiting in a box.

For now I wanted to at least create a baseline benchmark with my current GPU, but was surprised with my GTX1080 (not Ti) results when compared to other users GTX1080Ti.

Probably better to post your results in the actual Benchmark thread itself, I think @chiliwili69 compiles all that information into a spread sheet for comparing systems. Though yours with that GPU will likely be an outlier.

I would also keep an eye on prices for second hand 3090 or 3090 Ti's

I see second hand 3090's going for about half the price price of a 4080 in Oz. Do not see many (well any) local 3090 Ti's for sale for some reason however.

Either of these GPU's would give you a big uplift.

As you said, the CPU result is well as expected but the GPU test is really low. The 1080 should give you a result not far from a 1080Ti.

In the SYN_VANDER thread there is a link with a number of things to check/verify for low performance (of CPU test).

During the GPU test, specially for a 1080 with a top CPU, the GPU is expected to be at 100% load.

Just thinking loud:

- switch off any G-SYNC if any

- verify temperature limits of the GPU

- be sure you connect the monitor to the GPU (not the mobo, just in case)

- verify that IL-2 uses the dedicated GPU (not the Intel integrated graphics of the CPU). In NVIDIA panel control.

- try other cable (DP if you used HDMI, or HDMI if you used DP)

- try to run the GPU test but at FullHD resolution

- put the GPU in other slots of the Mobo

Thanks everyone for your advice, I double checked settings, and can't squeeze out any more IL-2 4K benchmark performance. I'm going to leave it alone for now, until I upgrade GPU.

Btw, in the 4K test when I remove MSAA and lower cloud quality, my fps jumps up 2.5x, which is way more than what I need to drive my 4K 60Hz monitor.

When running synthetic GPU benchmarks, they are on par with other users GTX1080 results so I think my GPU is ok.

Now waiting for that RTX 4080 or 4090 stock availability...

Looking at the specs of the 1080 vs 1080Ti,

Category GTX 1080 GTX 1080 Ti
Memory 8GB GDDR5 11GB GDDR5
Memory clock 1251 MHz 1376 MHz
Memory bandwidth 224.4 GB/s 484.4 GB/s
Texture rate 257 GT/s 331 GT/s

Maybe your results are OK. As we have not tested any other 1080 with this benchmark.  Perhaps only 3GB makes that difference for that particular settings of the GPU test. Or perhaps the bandwidth.
