TheSNAFU Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 So flying the p51D in vr the wings look far wider than they should given the slender wings of the p51. I’ve changed scale in openxr toolkit and the ingame ipd both of which makes the cockpit larger or smaller but doesn’t seem to make much difference in how the wings look from inside the cockpit. At 100 scale the cockpit, gauges, levers etc look right to me. Is this just what it is in vr or is there something I can do to make the wings look like they should while maintaining the cockpit size that looks most accurate?
Murleen Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Is it just a foreshortening effect, as in the cockpit you're looking end-on to the wings?
TheSNAFU Posted December 13, 2022 Author Posted December 13, 2022 Good question murleen. I don’t know but if I adjust the ingame ipd all the way or most of the way down the wings look as I would expect and close to what they look like in 2d. But then the inside of the pit is miniature. I was hoping some would comment on theirs so I know if it’s the same for them or not. I’m using the Reverb g2 by the way.
firdimigdi Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 There's nothing you can adjust for this. I use a G2 but have never sat in a P51 so I have no reference.
TheSNAFU Posted December 13, 2022 Author Posted December 13, 2022 Thanks for the reply firdimigdi. I guess it is what it is.
SCG_motoadve Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 I have sat in a P51 a few times , the wings look a lot shorter in the game.
Crocogator Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 You can adjust the world scale using openXR, and I think steamvr has a similar setting buried somewhere. The IPD also seems to make a difference, at least in Windows MR headsets. Most people recommend setting the world scale to 112%, so perhaps you're missing about that extra 12% scale. I know I thought that the LA5 stick was incredibly small and the 109 pedals looked too close. After adjustment (and I mean you have a lot of freedom here, up to 400% afaik) things looked right.
TheSNAFU Posted December 15, 2022 Author Posted December 15, 2022 (edited) Yeah thanks, I have been messing with the scale in openxr and the ipd adjustments ingame. The only way the wings look remotely correct is when the scale is so small the pit looks like a miniature of the actual thing. When the pit looks right the wings look too fat and short vs what they actually look like. Based on the feedback I’ve received here there is apparently no solution. SCG_motoadve Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 No solution, the scale you can change in Steam VR, but will change everything so you wont be bale to just change the wings to your liking.
dburne Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Maybe it is just me I don't know but for some odd reason I have never had an apparent issue with the size of my wings...

This is why I asked to begin with, wondering whether it was something in my setup/settings or just the way it is in vr. In the P51D at least, it is very noticeable. The wings look much wider particularly at the tips and shorter sitting in the pit than IRL or even in 2d where they look correct. Not something I’m loosing sleep over, was just trying to improve the look if I could.
Crocogator Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 (edited) What headset do you have? maybe there's some barrel distortion going on. edit: actually, pincushion for what you describe, perhaps. Edited December 16, 2022 by Crocogator
SCG_motoadve Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 Its not the headset, I went from the G2 to Vive Pro2, to Varjo Aero and the P51 wing looks short. I notice this because its the only plane in Il2 that I have sat in the cockpit of the real one more than once.
TheSNAFU Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 Yeah the wings in vr look nothing like this.
firdimigdi Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 That is a wide angle camera though, note the distortion due to wide FOV. I'll take @SCG_motoadve's first hand experience as evidence enough without need for a video - not sure what the reason for appearing so in VR might be - might have to dig around a bit and see.
TheSNAFU Posted December 16, 2022 Author Posted December 16, 2022 Aside from the video, You can see (or at least I see) a big difference between the wings size in vr vs. 2d which looks much closer to real life.
FeuerFliegen Posted January 11, 2023 Posted January 11, 2023 Not referring to the wings specifically, but since playing IL-2 in VR, I've felt that many things seem too small- I mainly realized this when I would look at my navigator next to me in the Mosquito and see how small his body was. Also when you are a turret gunner and see an MG51 or MG81z right in front of you, and it looks like a miniature gun; nowhere near the real size of the gun in real life.
TheSNAFU Posted January 11, 2023 Author Posted January 11, 2023 (edited) You may improve what you’re describing with the ingame ipd settings. You can adjust them while in game to see how the changes make things bigger or smaller. You can also adjust world scale in steamvr or Openxr whichever you use. Edited January 11, 2023 by TheSNAFU
Crocogator Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 isnt the external model of the p51 the same as the internal model? if the external models proportions look good, maybe il2's vr is itself a bit wonky re visual depth.

I think it is the vr implementation though I can’t say with any certainty. What I know is the size of the p51 wings are not right in vr. Far too wide all the way to the wing tips.
