Would it be possible to add a server-side option to disable the "rangefinder function" in multiplayer?

There are currently two ways in multiplayer to get an advantage over the others.
-Disable the grass
-Use this "rangefinder function"*.

It would be nice to have the possibility, in multiplayer, to disable the "rangefinder " in the options of a server so that the confrontations between players are based more on the talent of the pilot than the "talent of IA".

*This feature makes an AI crew member clearly indicate the distance to the target.

(Having the ability to force the display of grass, at least in low, would also be nice).

?

it would be cool if he took care of it... it has already been reported, since then, no news...

@Regingrave answered me on the "multiplayer" topic  and on discord:

"We've been discussing it this summer on forum, as I said then, such changes will break commander's gameplay, so that will require revisiting it.
It's not that terrible, because the distance is given in hundreds of meters, which is a rough estimate."

I forgot to answer: In our case what we ask is just to allow server admins to lock this feature, not to remove it completely. In milsim events or even on some public servers,  we would rather try to guess the distances using the binoculars or visors instead of using the helper, because it ruins a bit the immersion

For multiplayer:

In my eyes, the commander's gameplay is not about asking for distances but about supervising the tank, i.e.:
-Set an objective (attack/defend this position)
-Choose the approach (frontal attack, bypass, ambush,...)
-Decide on a route to get there, or choose the most optimal location for defense
-Scout the environment for possible threats and identify them
-Tell the rest of the crew (in case of multicrew) what to do (fire, wait for a better opportunity,...)
-Help the gunner to hit by giving an estimation of the distance thanks to the binoculars and by informing the gunner so that he can correct his shot (Too short, too long, add 100 meters, shoot in the tracks...)

In short, the commander is the most important role of the tank, and he is the one who has the most to do. It's not for nothing that we feel blind and vulnerable when he gets killed.

Giving server admins the ability to remove this "rangefinder function" option will not break the commander's gameplay.

We want to be able to compete with our knowledge, our talents, our experiences, not with aids.

In airplanes it is possible to play this way, i.e. without any indication if the admin chooses to deactivate the technochat for example.

you didn't forget, you had already said it in the bug thread... it's just another thing that will be left on the side of the road like a lot of things, you'll have to deal with...

hello, there is no possibility of being able to put the black triangle of your tank on the map?
Maybe in time I will be able to not lose half an hour looking for such a place or the road or the forest of turn!!! then the planes "there is no defence with a tank" and are almost always them to destroy the tanks, but so it is easy, then the tanks in defence of the positions are there for beauty or do they also disappear?? seemed more fun, and it is! Only that it takes too long and then from what I see is also the only one to be so beautiful, I just wish I had that the maps were complete with every detail, then you can orient yourself as faccevano those real but they were equipped with maps and were real, we are virtual so even wanting it is not the same thing so to avoid that already the few players turn empty until aessere stufi I would recommend a lot, to put at least the triangle that marks the direction in which you move, and finally not lose more the desire to play and waste time! Thanks and congratulations anyway for the multiplayer! Ps: you have to attract the guys to the game, not push them away.

@CIPPOZ, please stop spamming every message you post with a bunch of random tank images and screenshots.

Thanks Luke, I was about to step in but you beat me to the punch.

Anyhow, If you need to post an image or screen capture to show an issue, feel free.

But we don't need to see a wall of un-related pictures in every post.  You like tanks, I like tanks, but that is going over the top.

Sorry, I didn't think the images bothered, anyway that's no problem, I put them to make the forum prettier, that's all!! Hello

They are nice, but it makes the threads really long with lots to scroll through to get to the actual messages.

Would be great recieve answers about ability turn off AI rangefinder by server admins, not about some pictures in messages:wacko:

Turn off AI for commander not ruine gameplay. Turn off binoculars for SU-122, all yellow skins for StuG, not rotating visors, etc - THAT'S ruine gameplay!

That is incredible dent to the realism of this game and the goal of the game overall. It needs to be removed or at least to be locked somehow server side. Honestly the only thing that is realistic about ground forces is your ability to range your shots and take down targets and this options is completely defeating that purpose. As mind as well not have shell drop at all and have the shells impact exactly on your crosshair.

S! to All,

I really like all IL2 maps, planes, and tanks...
But one thing that would give much more to IL2 tankers...
Is that a server creator and host could decide (if they want), to block those (2) two minor things in the code of the MP online (configuring on the server side and not client side):

1 --Disable the grass - understanding that this was implemented to help older PC and low Internet connection users, the choice to have it on or off. But for a tanker, this is an insult not having these lock for MP missions. So that, some of the tanker use it against the other tanker players!!!;

2--Use this "rangefinder function"* - again, this is great if a tanker is playing a single player missions, and need to work with the AI for coordinating each steps... but again, this is a cheat for tankers that are wondering how an enemy tank can get a direct hit at around 2k and further, when playing online?!!;

These are not bad comments, but just a way for asking some minor changes that would help the IL2 tankers community.

Cheers,
GenMarkof

p.s.: a special thanks to the creators of Tank Crew and all collector vehicles!!!

I will pass this thread on to the DEV team to see what they think.

Regingrave is on holiday. and won't see it until he gets back.

I have the same opinion, please make this ranging function optional, so multiplayer server admins could turn it off. It takes away a lot of skillset required in sim battles.

I have always been of the opinion that there should be NO AI input what so ever in multiplayer.

By now I know two options of how to get the range to a target by using the AI:

- using the "attack target" command, but the AI gunners are usually restricted so you will not get any info out of it on most servers

- using the "move to" command

Both could get solved by just removing the distance in meters from the messages...or make them deliberately inaccurate

Seems it would just be simpler to turn off the Command Menu (tilde ~ key) in the Expert Server Difficulty Settings.  Those who want it could and those who don’t could.  Everybody wins.

+1, It would indeed be easier. (plus it would save me from displaying it when I want to put the binoculars away but I miss my key combination in a hurry ?)

This really needs to be removed from multiplayer servers and like others said above: easiest is just to make it possible for server makers to remove the command menu in the settings.

The command menu now enables one to get exact distances to targets with laser range finder precision, and also the command menu allows when to see through bushes and houses, making it easy to find hiding enemies by using the command menu.

Having this (laser) range finder which also make it easy to see where enemies are hiding, ruins the simulator part especielly in multiplayer servers, ina  simulator the fun is to do this by normal ways: range estimating, using the optics of the tank and binos and the mill system. Having this to me removes a lot of the fun of using a ww2 tank.

Afterall we multicrew in multiplayer so giving commands by the command menu is pointless as we talk directly and do everything directly person to person.

I´m not asking to remove the command menu completely, its usefull in single player campaign/missions but in multiplayer its ruining gameplay and realism and the fun in tank combat hence an option to remove it in multiplayer servers is REALLY needed.

Guys, does this really work on the server? I mean the definition of the range through the commander's menu. I decided to check on purpose and it did not work. Yes, there is a red circle which, when you point it at the target turns into a cross and that's it. I went through different commands and still could not get the numbers of the range. In general, this menu does not seem to me very convenient to use. Therefore, I mainly determine the range by eye.

Additionally to the feature being problematic it does not work well all the time in MP and I still do not understand why and when it is the case:
* For some player the shortcut turns from  F7 to Alt + F7 (in my case, now, it works only with Alt + F7. Before it was F7. I have a an AZERTY keyboard)
* For some players it does not work at all from time to time (F7 or Alt + F7 does nothing). Maybe it is another shortcuts that gets activated somehow ?
* When switching the radio to the ennemy side (voluntarily or accidently) it disables the gunner giving you the information, which is more or less normal but adds to the confusion

This results in players being able to use it while others cannot, during the same game.

By the time you get done fiddling with the range commands you are probably already dead.  In multiplayer....

not really and in SU 152 you gain a lot of time actually because one miss = death due to the long loading time

After doing it a couple of times Im pretty sure you can do it by muschle memory and wont take more than 1-3 seconds max.
similair to all the button presses one have to do to start tank: start engine, close driver visor, start periscope, move to gunner, unlock gun and get to the periscope sight, switch to commander, open hatch, move from iron sight on the 50 cal, unlock the 50 cal. Then you are ready to drive, if using a sherman, for a first timer it will take time, for someone who play every day: 1-2 seconds.
