Online server question.........

Recommended Posts

Once one finds a server that one can play on, how does one know how that server works? What keys work, what don't, if you can get repaired, is there a "Map" that works, or will let you know where you are? And what keys will do it for you? I am used to playing off line, and am used to having "all the comforts" so to speak. I know out there in the world it would be different, just need some advise on how to get by..........

Thanks,

Thanks, but what does all that mean?

I guess the checked boxes work......

But the colored ones I'm not too sure about

Like a map without a key............

Yup, I'm new at this.?

They're the exact same realism options that are available to you in SP.  It's showing you which ones are enabled on that server.

Once you join a server, it will show you the map and you'll see a briefing tab that usually contains some server/mission-specific info.  You'll select a spawn point, just like in a quick mission and then choose your aircraft.

Some don't have the map in the right-hand corner, that shows where you are on the map or the "bad guys". Some don't have icons. What does a red box without a check mean as opposed to a red box WITH a check? There are unchecked boxes with red , green or nothing surrounding them. Does that have significance? Some times when you land you get "repaired", others, that doesn't seem to happen. Unless there is a certain spot one goes to on the base?

No, I don't think they are all the same. Just need some input on how to read the symbols & colors.

Flying blind is frustrating...........

But a lot of the 'fave' servers ARE 'blind', as in realism... It's often a lot different to SP playing, intentionally. Similarly a lot of them won't allow MODS either. I guess you just have to 'feel' your way...

object marker box, selected off in above (Berloga) settings, (nor does Finnish combat box or SYN just for info). Shows other craft positions plus ground targets

Red box checked means enabled, so pre-warmed engine enabled (try starting a pe2 on a winter map) most servers have this enabled. All other disabled. I think the coloured boxe are coded to the settings they come under so how they group. So green and red boxes colour have no significance wrt tick boxes. If its ticked it is enabled, so spectators (ie bail and watch from chute), technochat (flaps, throttle, mixture prop pitch % displayed if you have them enabled in your game settings) can be shown, and handling hints (the garbage that comes up telling you are flying too fast or too slow or too low is also displayed if your game setting have it enabled.

The rest is pretty well self explanatory

@Knarley-Bob

For help with the REALISM: CUSTOM screen above, see section 9.2 (pg. 69-71) in the Operator's Manual. You can select these options in single player missions too by clicking on the Realism button before you start the mission. If you select the "Technochat" option in the Realism screen, the icon explanation is in this post.

On the left side of the server list above:

  • The small diamond icon is for servers with custom settings.
  • The small diamond icon with a chevron above it is for servers with "Normal" settings (settings that are suitable for inexperienced pilots).
  • The small diamond icon with a two chevrons above it is for servers with "Expert" settings (settings that are suitable for experienced pilots),

On the right side of the server list:

  • The red lock icon is for servers that require a password to join.
  • The red joystick icon is for servers that require a joystick and do not allow mouse control of aircraft.

There are lots more resources in the IL-2 Sturmovik Resources post.
