Removing Player applied tactical codes from aircraft Updated to Game 5.506b

G'day all,

Link updated to V2 which is compatible with game version 5.506b. extra TAC code sheets added.

A small mod to remove the player applied code letters. I personally do not like the way in which the player applied code letters are controlled and applied to enemy and friendly AI aircraft, in some instances overwriting historically correct skins.

Basically this mod just makes the various code letters and symbols invisible in game by using an edited alpha channel.

its JSGME ready.

Not to take away from this mod as I can see other places it can be useful but generally, I think if you don't populate the tac codes then you don't get them in game. If they are already on the aircraft when you go into the aircraft setup, then just clicking remove will get rid of them. So, if a custom skin has already got the correct markings or you just don't want tac codes then don't populate them or ensure they are removed. You cannot put tactical codes onto official nonblank/non generic skins anyway.

@Off_Winters Rob have a look over in the Tunisia/Kuban thread, I just posted some info for you that I think could be important for when you are customising skins.tab.eng

<edit>Sorry just saw a post that is saying that AI are defaulting to codes on and populated with values with custom skins.....which would look bad........and now understand why you did this mod. Must not have had enough coffee this morning to read properly.

The post didn't say but I assume this is in QMB as I can't think how it would happen any other way. PWCG controls the skin and the codes. Guessing EMB does or will and hand edited missions you can fix. But QMB stuff would be an issue this mod would solve. If this is the issue, then you'd hope over time QMB would be enhanced to allow you to set skins on each AI plane.

<edit2> Seems like it got fixed for official non generic skins in the hotfix and they are looking at it for custom skins. Hopefully there is a solution.

G'day Scott,

yep thats the issue, you can get rid of the codes on your aircraft but AI planes in your flight will display codes over the top of the custom skin you set.

example QMB my plane on left without codes but my wingman is still displaying codes. and horrible Russian ones at that.

the other thing that I still hate is some aircraft still default to Russian pilots no matter what map you fly on. but I have the pilot mod to fix that as well.

Hello @Off_Winters
Could these files be modified to improve them?

G'day Julian,

yes mate I do believe the files could be edited to improve the look of the codes. theres not much room to play with but on the German code sheet you could possibly enlarge the Chevron symbols slightly. the trick will be keeping the edge details crisp and clear whilst using the alpha channel which can give a bit of grief along faded/diagonal edges.

I had a quick crack at the German sheet and got a 12% increase in size of the double chevron before it started to be impacted by boundary limits on the display in game.

you can see the double chevron is closer to the camo paint at the top and further below the rivet line at the bottom compared to the original single chevron. The double chevron was originally the same size as the single chevron displayed.

the above was a quick 10 minutes of editing, I'm sure if people put a bit more time into the edits it could be refined a bit more to get slightly larger symbols on the German sheet. or any other countries sheet for that matter.

I find this pretty annoying when using custom skins for QMB. Hope someone will find a solution that will work for everyone.

Hello @Off_Winters
Yes, that's the idea of being able to increase their size.
I imagine that this template will have some sizes that can not be increased.

hello @Off_Winters, does this mod also apply to tanks?

G'day Moustache,

I haven't checked, but I would say yes it will also prevent the player applied codes and symbols on tanks as well.

Thanks for this. Does it remove the tactical code from the players aircraft as well? Only just booted up BoX with the latest update and have a '01' over my custom player aircraft paintscheme :(
