dburne Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 Not the first time I have heard this but this is just heavy speculation based on hearsay so take it with a grain of salt. IMHO Reverb G2 has been the best bang for the buck VR headset ever made and has held that crown for a while. I am hoping this is not true.
Drano Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 I just hope they haven't already bailed on parts for the G2. I bought one in July and absolutely love it but I'm really worried about the cable just crapping out on my for no reason at all. They've been impossible to buy and apparently for months before I bought. Not to say they're COMPLETELY unavailable. I mean they're unavailable on the "sales" site at 89USD but they'll sell you one on their "parts" site for like 169 or something like that. Leaves me SMH. This alone worries me. WMR has been a mixed bag for me. There were more things that I could do thru Oculus prior more easily, but I've found ways around to make it work. Displaying other windows was a hurdle.

SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 Rumor confirmed. Microsoft / WMR is teaming up with Meta for their new line of headsets.
[CPT]Crunch Posted October 11, 2022 Posted October 11, 2022 Money's never been made on the hardware end, it's always been the Metacuck type social engineering and software sales. Ask Samsung about that, they were the king of VR hardware sales and went belly up completely lacking any software side.
TheAmazinGreat Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Dang! Been wanting a G2 for a while and saw the mega sale they are on now and was gonna pick one up. I wondered if the sale was because of a new headset or some other issue, IL2 forum comes through! Still think it’s worth getting one now? Been playing on an original Quest for a while and wanted to get into a dedicated PCVR HMD as standalone isn’t a big draw for me. @Drano what cable are you referring to? Isn’t it just a display port cable and USB C?
Drano Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 Oh of course not! That'd be too easy! It's a proprietary cable that runs through some box with a power brick that plugs into that! Coming out of the box on the PC end it's a USB-C and DP but the rest of it isn't something you could just put together yourself. The cable is apparently the achilles heal of what is otherwise a really great headset. Hopefully I can get another before this one dies. I treat it well. I'm only a flight sim guy so I'm seated all the time, the cable is on a pulley system, the power box is velcro'd to the side of the desk so it doesn't move around and the headset spends all it's time either on my head or on a stand with a cover on it. And I don't put nearly the hours into this as I used to. But couldn't go back to TIR on a monitor after a few years in VR! 1

TheWarsimmer Posted October 12, 2022 Posted October 12, 2022 It's an absolutely amazing headset imo. Worth it at this price. Sad to see that they will exit the market.

Sad to see that they will exit the market. Again - there has been no "official" statement to that effect. It is still speculation but odds that they will seem to be growing. While they may not put as much effort into it going forward I am not sure I see MS totally abandoning the WMR software. 2023 should definitely be interesting for the VR market. Personally I think Oculus is going to have a big fail with the Quest Pro. Heck they did not even mention using Link for the PC at Connect. I anticipate they may make a pivot to a Quest 3 sooner but will see.
TheSNAFU Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I’m just hoping the vr market does not descend into a place where we have only standalone sets not focused on pc’s or super high priced sets out of reach to many of us. HP offers that middle ground where good sets are available for a reasonable price. Guess we shall see. 2

BladeMeister Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 My TIR5 is still working great for like 150$! S!Blade<>< 1 1
JumpnShootman Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 This was going to happen as soon as Joanna Popper left for Hollywood. No one else with HP cares about VR
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 If HP will drop VR, we still have Samsung, do they work on new HMD? Samsung O+ was good product for price and quality, similar to Reverb.
TheSNAFU Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I think there is a chance pc gaming vr would die on the vine if the market goes low and highest end only. I wont pay $1-2,000 for a headset and I suspect some majority wouldn't or couldn't either. I hope the industry is smart enough to recognize that.

I think the issue is Meta is dragging more down to the very low end. I am talking stand alone here. Quest Pro is not aimed at what we do here. Edited October 13, 2022 by dburne

Lusekofte Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 Vr for me is getting into the cockpit. Pimax and Vario demands basestation and a lot of tweaking I simply won't fo. It also require up to 2k staying on top of the food chain every year. I bought G2 and it say my USB is not the version it is. And require a Bluetooth adaptor I have. So I am still on Rift S until I can figure out on how to stay at least 5 years with same hardware. If that is not possible, screw the industry. I go back to 2D and other laid back hobbies
