Where is Jason?

I thought some of the worries were premature but at this point I'm more inclined to think that the praetorian guard has decided to rotate leadership as we close this chapter in the IL-2 saga.

If that is the case and Jason is reading this, a big thanks for all the hard work, all the achievements of the team with BOBP and BON, and the efforts to research the Pacific and B25 bombers. It was a great contribution to IL-2.

At this point, I think it is safe to assume that either Jason is playing the long game with us and saving himself for the announcement of the next theater, or he and 1C have in fact parted ways.  If he doesn't make the big announcement personally, then I think it is the latter and he can't talk to us about it (since he is consistently in the forums).

If that is the the case, I also want thank him for all these years of dedication and saving my favorite hobby from the road it was going down when he took the helm. :salute:

I'm sorry Jade_Monkey but the whole entire "Great Battles" series does exist because, back in 2010, Jason Williams had previously purchased "Rise of Flight"... both the brand AND THE SOURCE CODE. Thus, it is very hard to believe that Jason Williams is now out of this business. If he is, then maybe he sold the source code, who knows (to 1C or to somebody else). Or maybe he kept the source code for himself so that his relations with the Russians of 1C Company come to and end and he starts putting together a team of American developers in the USA who will start a new brand of simulators which, on their turn, will be based in "Rise of Flight" too (777 Studios would do that very nicely since Jason based it in the USA). In that latter case, the "IL-2 Sturmovik"  brand may continue, why not, but the existing line of "Great Battles" products would stop immediately and the brand would be attributed to a different source code (and at this point I don't see what candidate is out there available for that).

If both Jason Williams and 1C keep silent... there's nothing we can be sure of.

That would be something, imagine if Jason cut relations with 1C and took the source code with him? And 1C kept going as Il-2 Sturmovik with a different engine and we got a different sim from Jason‘s new company? Hard to wrap m head around it for now, at least for now without having thought about it for too long.

It's a bit early for the obituaries isn't it ?

Although if I may indulge in a little speculation myself..

I'm not sure anyone would want to start a new sim, given pilot numbers and the general state/trajectory of the world.

If Jason takes the source code with him my wish is that he starts a completely renamed simulator and that the "IL-2 Sturmovik" brand comes to an end. Back in 2011 1C wanted to keep exploiting the celebrity of the brand... and this is how "Storm of War: The Battle of Britain" was released as "IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover". That was a big mistake. Please tell me how many Soviet "Shturmoviks" overflew the cliffs of Dover during the Battle of Britain... Damn it... Then the game was broken at release... it ended up as a commercial failure at release... but 1C wanted more juice from the fruit, more juice from the well-established celebrity of the term "IL-2 Sturmovik". Time was going by and things were going worse... 1C had very few time before "IL-2 Sturmovik" stops being synonym of "great simulator" and starts being synonym of "IL-2 ca-ca" (must be said with Gremlins' accent). SO they contacted Jason Williams in 2012 because he owned "Rise of Flight", a stable well-working flight sim. The rest is history.

Currently we have three existing generations of sims that are named with the brand "IL-2 Sturmovik", which is owned by a Russian company. Three is far than enough and, precisely, because of "the general state/trajectory of the world" it would be better for our world (NATO/UK/EU) that we do possess our own sims AND THEIR CORRESPONDING TRADED BRANDS rather than depending on the "good name" of a brand that we need to be bargaining permanently (cf. Jason Williams of 777 Studios, based in the USA, and Buzzsaw of Team Fusion Simulations, based in Canada). If you go back to the 1990s the USA and the UK were the main producers of PC combat flight sims and, here in continental western Europe, we were very happy with their products. We don't need to depend on brand owners, we need good flight sims, this is all what we need.

MSFS and DCS seem to be doing just fine.  But both those who developers also seem to still know how to communicate with their customer base... unlike this one, so they've also got that going for them.

DCS? Great Communicators?

I asked the allmighty AI, „Where is Jason?“, and it showed me this:

Bushido code, entire task forces and commands would refuse to communicate, the silence was their message to HQ, and it was acceptable, even if it did cost the war due to complete lack of control.  So Pacific it is.

Perfect? No.  Better than 1C? 1000x yes.

I already have my weekly DCS newsletter today without having to start a "update this week?" thread, plus a few YouTube teases on top of a consistently active reddit and forum where 3 staff consistently interact with customers (we may not like what they say all the time but at least they speak...), 1000x better.

You are quoting me and putting words in my mouth I never said, again.

I never said he is out of the business, or that he doesn't own the source code. Just that he might not play a public facing role anymore and they might have someone else step in for that. He is probably sick of dealing with us (although he was online 6min ago).

Personally, I suspect Jason may have been kidnapped by aliens, who, after the usual probing, have decided to take him back with them to Epsilon Boötis, where he will be forced at raygun-point to create a space-combat simulation series.

It seems more likely than some of the theories offered here...

Until 3 weeks ago Id say this sim held the high ground with their dev diaries. Get your point on reddit but I dont use social media so thats my bad. Seems a disorganised mess to me though.

BUT they are not great communicators. "We will share news when we have it"  is the new "two weeks be sure" and endless unacknowledged bug threads on the forum are a testament to that. Currently then, perhpas the best of a bad bunch. Perhaps. Hardly a ringing endorsement.

Anyhow- wheres Jason?

To be clear, when I say “1C” I’m not talking about our Devs in Moscow but rather the actual bosses.

The current Devs are saying/not saying what they’re being told to say/not say.

My apologies Jade_Monkey, truthfully, I guess I mistakenly read your thanks just as, after those latter, the sentence "It was a great contribution to IL-2". I thought you were addressing  thanks as if Jason was definitely leaving the Great Battles line.

At any rate, I still express wishes for a time in the future when we'll have great combat flight sims yet never again the "IL-2 Sturmovik" brand.

I'd just like to point out that, regardless of the future of the series or what place Jason will have in it, I see no reason why he couldn't or wouldn't pop in to say goodbye.

The exact same way @AnPetrovich did.

So whatever the case, I expect we'll get that much at least. Even if he can't give details about the whys and wherefores of it, he can still say 'thx bye' to everyone. Sure we're annoying and partially insane, but I doubt he's apathetic enough to just leave without a word.

Perhaps he's on vacation, but staying at the Hotel California.

It's also why I made the Prisoner reference earlier. You can try to resign, but they still own you, until they're done with you.

I'd imagine he's on holiday following the Normandy release. If he has moved on, 1C would likely announce it once a replacement was in the position.

But if we're speculating... I think he's in The National Archives in Japan researching PTO :P

You know, Japan did just open back up to tourism...

If Jason comes back, but starts showing a marked interest in German/Russian planes, we'll know something's afoot.

Oddly I was just paging down and I thought 'did my peripheral vision just see someone raising cthul'hu?' So I paged back up after a while - and yup. It is a bit confusing that the second half is in Czech though!

Nah, they were just borrowed from the unofficial channel.

At some point right after the channel was created there was a 1CGS Jason user though (green color, so official). Check #welcome and it might still be there with a few reactions. Then after a few minutes the user was gone from the list… gone from the server.
