FeuerFliegen Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 So I was randomly playing around looking at the P-38 in 3rd person view, and noticed when I pressed the button for "engine outlet cowl shutters control" that I noticed that there are outlet cowl shutters on the bottom of where the engines are on the P-38. Technochat doesn't acknowledge this, so I assume very people know about it as the only way I would have ever discovered it was simply by randomly trying it while looking at the plane in 3rd person. I looked around and didn't see any cockpit switches being activated when I opened and closed them either. Was this just something that was left out of the pilot's notes / technochat? I've never really had a problem with P-38 overheating so I don't know if there's really any benefit to having them open. Thoughts?
FTC_DerSheriff Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 Its basically an emergency feature of the P-38. It has for the general player no use. I know that @Krupnskisometimes flies with lean mixture and opens and closes them manually to get additonal speeed out of the aircraft.
Sandmarken Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 I read about those some days ago and thinking our version didnt have them ? weird how they are not mentioned in techchat ?
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 I think it's something they left unfinished. In testing I havent noticed any change in speed or cooling with them full open vs full closed. Just consider it a useless graphical quirk.
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 What about the outlet shutters of the P-47? They were for the intercooler right? I usually leave it at 50% but in-game, does it make a difference if you fully open or shut them?
=MERCS=JenkemJunkie Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 Its definitely modeled on the P47, I don't know how to min/max it though, as I don't touch that plane.

I had my oil rads on same key, so i didnt notice this as i tought its just 3rd oil flap, as it was closing when i closed oil and i would see % in techchat. But now that you mentioned it i tested it and its like you say, also i would think something is wrong with them as there is no way that when that big flap is full open it dont produce any drag compared to when its full closed, like its now in game (speed is same when i tested it on diff alts), and yes there is no techchat info about it or cockpit lever moving when only its key is pressed up/down. 1 hour ago, I./JG52_Woutwocampe said: What about the outlet shutters of the P-47? So they work, and techchat corectly say % and comand name. Edited August 25, 2022 by CountZero
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 Alright then 50% it is If you fully close them will the turbocharger overheat or something?

It's the inlet cowls. If you fully close them you lose a lot of power. It doesn't really effect oil or cylinder head temperature too much on the 47, but you don't save much drag below 50% so that's about as low as you should normally go. 1
Art-J Posted August 25, 2022 Posted August 25, 2022 @SCG_FeuerFliegen These are intercooler outlet flaps. Thus, they should affect carb temps and speed, but as mentioned already, that doesn't seem to be simulated, at least not in the P-38. Maybe it will be, however, if devs decided to add their animation? 1

RyanR Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 The flaps on the bottom are for the intercooler. One of the standard "cooling" commands controls them. As far as I can tell, they do nothing in game. Carb temps never change, and there's no change in drag, with them open or closed. I meant to post about this a few months ago when I was doing a BoBP campaign. -Ryan 1 1
