Dear community,

I have a VKB Gunfighter base with ultimate grip, which is a very nice piece of hardware.

Recently I came to realize that each time i restart my computer, my values for calibration seems off on all axes extreme, and i need to recalibrate before playing. This has become a systematic and time consuming task.

I am under the impression that before it used to stay calibrated regardless of number of restarts. Could it be due to the USB port?

I am unsure about what to expect exactly. With which frequency do you recalibrate your VKB Gunfighter?

Many thanks in advance,

Y.

Mine is very rarely, usually when I update the firmware.

You might try a different USB Port. And of course only in the VKB Software.

Same here. It's part of the process for updating the firmware. Flash, hit default, calibrate. Otherwise it's been fine. Are you talking about the calibration in the VKB software or the game? I've found that once calibrated in the configurator it may need to be done again in the game. Once I've done that I'm not having problems with it drifting around. Just throwing it out there but in case you didn't know, the VKB stuff should never be calibrated in windows--only with their software.

Once when I flashed the firmware and set up the springs and friction clutches on initial setup; haven't touched it since.

I was referring to calibration in Vkb software. I have never calibrated in the game. Is it necessary?

I have always calibrated in every game after first calibrating in the VKB software (or other manufacturer's software).

Absolutely.  You need to calibrate in all games.

I don't recall being ever asked to calibrate in any games. Just assign the axis and make button assignments.

You should not keep getting asked to calibrate in VKB software. Do you have it set to run as administrator? I hardly ever even run the VKB software once set up.

I have the VKB Gunfighter Mk.III stick. I calibrated when it was first installed 10 months ago and again last month when I did a firmware update.

I am not requested to calibrate. I use vkb software from times to times to change or fine tune some settings, which is a life time project, till i nail the perfect setting, getting the best of what vkb can offer.

That changing/finetuning is very likely what's causing it then if you are changing values that the stick relies on to compute error correction/compensation. Or if you have changed the precision.

Another thing to check is the error rate reported by the grip, if those spike when you are reaching the outer limits then it can cause the stick to misbehave at times:

There should be a zconfig.ini file present in the same directory as the VKBDevCfg-C.exe - edit that and under the [User] section add a line reading User=Developer - for reference this is what mine looks like:

[User]
PartialWrite=0
PartialCalibration=0
AutoRegFileMake=1
User=Developer

Then you can access this part of the utility:

Normally the communication errorlevel should be 0 through all the range of motion. If you see any indication of errors reported then remove the grip, clean the contacts and reseat the grip as snuggly as possible.

@Firdimigdi: thanks for the detail response. I checked and error level is zero, accross all motion range.

I changed usB port and it seems to be holding the calibration for now.

Not so much.

I’ve never done so in IL2 or DCS.

Ok so I am a little confused, did your OP not state the issue was continually having to re-calibrate after each pc boot?

Only ever calibrate in VKB software, never in Windows game controller setting.

No, I was just noting that there was something wrong on the extreme of the range of motion. I changed the USB port, and recheck everything, and it seems it does no longer occur.
