Zooropa_Fly Posted July 22, 2022 Posted July 22, 2022 (edited) I've been trying to make a bomber defence mission (dogfight type) on the winter Rheinland map. Two efforts so far both resulting in some kind of corruption of the mission file. 30+ hours work seemingly wasted - so I'm not sure I want to start a third time ! 1st had 2 groups of (x9 bombers and x1 cover dropping on Frankfurt, being met by x3 262's). 2nd had x7 bombers with x1 cover, and x3 trains, at the time of the ME crash. Both crashes happened after hitting 'cntrl s' - the 'saving' pop up froze. 'Saving Text Mission' I think was displayed, and the progress bar stuck about 2/5 of the way up. From there I have to force the ME to end, and when I try and load the mission now I get : So something seems to have corrupted my mission file, twice. The re-save and check options in the ME can't access the file either. The 1st time I also had this pop up : Maybe nothing to do with the file corruption... Still on Win7 Pro SP2 btw. If anyone has a clue to what might be causing this, I'd be grateful. S! ZF. Edited July 22, 2022 by Zooropa_Fly
Sketch Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 If this happens, open the .msnbin file instead. It should open the mission, and then you can resave it as a different name. 1
Zooropa_Fly Posted July 23, 2022 Author Posted July 23, 2022 Thanks Sketch. I still can't get either file to open. Somehow, all my IL2 missions have been associated with the RoF ME. When I try in Windows to 'open with' the IL2 ME : On selection, it reverts back to : .. so for some reason it won't display the IL2 ME as an option for opening the file. Despite now being associated with the RoF ME - all other missions still load up fine when opened from within the IL2 ME. But none of them will launch via the file 'open with' option - as above. I did a full re-install of RoF recently, maybe during that it's taken ownership of the IL2 mission files. Perhaps I set opening all these file types in RoF as 'default' at some point. But I should still be able to select the IL2 ME to open a file from within windows, shouldn't I ? Cheers ! ZF.
Sketch Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 Zip up the mission and post it here or dm it to me. I'll take a look.
Zooropa_Fly Posted July 23, 2022 Author Posted July 23, 2022 ZW II.zip Thanks Sketch, appreciate the help here. Hopefully the zip file's ok.. S!

It won't show .msnbin files, but you can start typing the filename in the File Name box and it'll appear as a selectable option. 25 minutes ago, Zooropa_Fly said: ZW II.zip 623.48 kB · 0 downloads Thanks Sketch, appreciate the help here. Hopefully the zip file's ok.. S! The good news: I was able to open your mission without any problems and without any special actions on my side. The bad news: this means that there's likely something wrong with your installation, or your PC. Do you have the Steam version? If so, you can verify the integrity of the game files. If not, a re-install might fix things. From the look of it, it seems you still use Windows 7. It might also be that IL2 has finally dropped support for the Mission Editor for long-outdated operating systems that no-one should still be using anyway. Or something inside Windows has stopped working, which Windows is notorious for (Win7 more than Win10, in my experience). There's tons of other reasons why you really really really should move to Windows 10. 1
Gambit21 Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 I have lost missions to the save/corruption problem before. It’s rare, but I think once or twice with both the Hell Hawks and the Havoc builds. After the first time, I began saving a backup copy along with the normal save as often as I could stand it. It saved me more than once. I lost maybe 30 minutes or an hour of work instead of hours or days. 1
Sketch Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 (edited) I too, was able to open your mission without any issues. Here's a picture of it for me: I also recommend everything @AEthelraedUnraed suggested. Alternatively, you can try running the ResetEditorSettings.cmd file to reset the mission editor back to default settings. This may help you as well. You can find it inside your IL2 -> bin -> editor folder Good luck and happy mission making. Edited July 23, 2022 by Sketch 1

Did the trick, and subsequently the mission opens fine now. Not on Steam, and without going into it here - I'm trying to hang on to Win7 for as long as possible. But I realise that'll catch up with me sooner or later. 16 hours ago, Gambit21 said: After the first time, I began saving a backup copy along with the normal save as often as I could stand it. I was about 5 mins away from doing that when the crash happened ! But great advice - I'll do it more often. Thanks for the assistance Gents. Best section on the Forum. S! ZF.
