MG-15 & MG-81 tailgun ironsight purpose

I am wondering what the purpose/use of the rings on the iron sights are.

The MG15 usually is single ring with cross (+) and the mg81 has a double ring with cross.

I tried searching for old manuals from the war in hopes of finding out what the proper use of the rings is but havent had any luck.

I thought i'd ask here.

Thanks for your time!

Well my guess would be assistance with deflection shooting.

Yes I agree. I poorly worded my initial question I think.

I am looking for resources that may explain how to properly use the rings to aid in deflection shooting.

For example, I imagine there was an operators manual for the weapon that would've pointed out what and how to use the rings. I am seeking info similar to that, whether from a manual or any other source.

Cheers anyways, if I find any answers in the mean time I will update. I would guess you would place the enemy plane on the ring depending on deflection angle similar to how a REVI sight works. I just do not know which ring is used for which angle. Just thought it would maybe be useful to know.

I seem to recall either Requiem or I Fly Central had a video on the subject on youtube.  Worth watching through those channels.

The rings on both the reflector sight and the iron sight give you a width of 10% the distance. Meaning an aircraft with 10m span should fill the ring at a distance of 100m. Small rings or distances between centre and needles in the middle are 1% (radius in case of rings) in a similar manner. It is supposed to help with deflection shooting (or determination of distance).

The difference between the reflector sight and the iron sight is that with the reflector sight it remains true with any distance between eye and sight (due to the nature of a reflector sight where the reflection is perceived as infinitely far away), while with the iron sight this is only true for one particular distance between eye and sight. On the Revi3a for instance, the eye sight-distance at which it works as intended is 400mm.

Thanks fellas, aye I seen the requiem video about the REVI sight. He was unsure about the use of the iron sight though.

Thanks @JtDso the iron sight is mostly for determining distance? I was hoping it may be used for lining the target up depending on it's angle of approach. I remember reading an old operators manual for the 40mm Bofors AA gun that explained how to use the cartwheel sight on it for hitting targets. Was helpful and was hoping the iron sights on these tailguns may have the same documentation/use.

If it is just for determining distance then thanks for the clarification!

cheers everyone.
