Sorry up front, as this has probably been asked and answered a lot here already ?

I'm on the edge of pulling the trigger on Flying Circus Volume 1 (it's on sale now for ~€25,-).

I discovered today that there are multiple volumes (or at least 2 of them). Is there any reason why I shouldn't buy volume 1 and instead go for another volume?

(Fwiw: I play VR only and I'm hoping to get immersed in these open cockpits with a fan blowing in my face ?. A SP campaign would be nice, but if there's only a few nice SP scenarios that be OK too I guess. My main sim is DCS and I just occasionally switch to Il2 for a few sessions)

Hi Sirrah,

Well, for €25 FC 1 is a steal and well, well worth it, especially if you like the WW1 VR experience, which is wonderful in FC.

You get a very strong plane set in FC 1 but a relatively limited map (Arras) and only 1 or 2 seasons (spring/summer), and what FC 2 will add when it's launched is essentially a few more planes (already availaible, if you own FC 2, but for me less interesting than the FC 1 set), a lot more map and more seasons (well, the other 2 if I am not mistaken), and finally the long-awaited career mode.

FC 1 doesn't have a career mode, but there are several very good scripted campaigns and training missions available either with the game itself or in the forum from various kind-hearted and talented souls. You can also use Pat Wilson's excellent campaign generator, which is a superb tool for dynamic campaigns and is relatively easy to use.

So, FC 1 at that price is a perfect intro into the FC world, and, if you're hooked, FC2 will offer some very worthwhile additonal content. By the time you've exhausted the FC 1 content, FC 2 will probably also be discounted...

Thanks mate, that's all I needed to know

I'll go get it ?

Oh, one more thing..

Is it correct that FC doesn't have its own icon within Steam and is in fact embedded in the Il-2 main game?

I bought it and expected I needed to download it, but I don't see FC in my Steam library, nor can I see where or how to download it.

I don't use Steam that much, so sorry if this is a stupid question.

Oh and bonus question (have not yet searched for it myself to be honest):

Is FC supported by Simshaker For Aviators?

FC is one of many modules within the same game, so yes - it's within IL2BOS as shown above.

No idea about simshaker..

Yes, just fire up Il2 BoS (you will be offered standard and VR options from the start-up menu), and then you select the maps, campaigns, missions and planes from the menus therein based on which modules/planes you have bought.

If you've only bought FC 1, I believe you will only be able to select the Arras map in summer 1918 and will only have access to the 10 a/c included with FC 1.

Depending on your VR set-up, there's lots of advice in this forum about how to optimise your settings, use of third-party software, etc. to help you (if indeed you need it). I did.

Can't speak to SimShaker unfortuately; don't have it.

Enjoy!

Thanks guys

Social life just allowed me to fly a few 1vs1 and 4vs4 scenarios in various aircraft and I had an absolute blast!

I used this very helpful thread, when selecting my aircraft, as I know nothing about all these planes ?. That Fokker D.VIIF indeed seems very powerfull! To bad there is no scripted campaign for it.

My GF granted me some more "man-cave time" for this evening. I think I'll start the Sopwith Camel campaign.

Do they have plans to add career mode later on? I kinda liked that with the ww2 aircraft.

There are several “scripted campaigns” available for FC1/FC2:

- Kaiserschacht

- Spring Offensive
- Gallant Green
- Red Knights
- Cambrai 1917

…..plus Pat Wilson’s Campaign Generator and Vander’s Easy Mission Generator….. Lots of options out there…..

Have fun!

Yes, as I said above, FC 2 will bring a career mode to FC.

In the interim, use PWCG as mentioned above. It's very, very good.

One more thing I forgot to ask..

When doing the 4vs4 scenario, I noticed that I couldn't order my wingman (or at least didn't hear anything). Now I understand these things don't have radios, but do wingman commands still work? (Maybe by hand signals or something?)

Well, there are wingman/leader commands under the “tilde” key……..

Whether or not you can get them to do what you want them to do is an entirely different question.  They tend to be a somewhat egotistical bunch with their own agendas sometimes……you know, like real pilots……

Yes, they do work, although the only ones that I have found to work well are:

Cover me

Simshaker Wings supports the IL2 Great Battles series, including Flying Circus. I use it when I fly with a Realteus Forcefeel seat. Very immersive when climbing in the open sky, the seat shakes like mad because of the bullet hits, then I hear the wine of a SPAD engine and I know that I just got bounced hard. Also good for knowing when I'm on the edge of a stall for many different machines.

Thanks @gascan, but I'm only using the free SSA version. I searched a little and it seems not to support il2 unfortunately. Although I think Simshaker would be awesome for FC, I don't really fancy purchasing yet another side-application.

Another question:

I found the mission sub-forum, but is there maybe also something like a dedicated download page where I can filter what I'm looking for?

(Kinda like the user files for DCS)
