WWGeezer Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 The Wing Walkers are celebrating our 30-year anniversary. This flight sim squadron was formed in 1992, using the original Sierra/Dynamic "Red Baron" World War 1 based flight sim. The sim used Sierra's own "The Sierra Network" as the portal for flying on a TSN. Networks were all dial-up and beset with all manner of issues. Noisy phone lines often caused serious connectivity issues and the term "warping" came into existence. Technology improved and so did the sims we flew, with Red Baron giving over to Il Sturmovik Forgotten Battles, Il Sturmovik 1946, Rise of Flight and now IL Sturmovik Great Battles. We were one of many new units to form, and battled members of JG1, RAF74, Arabian Knights, Knights of the Northern Star, and many, many other virtual squadrons. New friendships were made in the process, strengthened through shared simulated combat and competition. Over time our passing interest in early aviation combat turned players into avid historians with expert knowledge of WW1 and WW2 history, accomplished graphic artists who created skins for the aircraft and self-taught programmers who built complex missions within a historical context. We look back fondly at those 30 years, the bonds that formed and the friendships we made. The original members discovered that "lone wolf" flying was ineffective at best. Team flying in flights or wingman pairs guaranteed better survivability and overall fun. WW membership stressed honor and fun as a squad over rank and glory as an individual flyer. As part of our 30-year anniversary we wanted to give something back to the flight sim community, so with that in mind we introduce the Wing Walker’s WW1 and WW2 dedicated public servers. The servers are typically open to the public unless we have a special squad event and the missions in rotation are specifically designed to support team flying. Over 25 missions in rotation, these dogfight missions designed by WWCephas and WWBiker are a sandbox style with some unique features that support squads or individuals flying in a cooperative environment. Here is a brief summary of some of the mission features. 1. The missions dynamically adjust according to the number of players from as low as 1 to as many as 24 (current server limit) in the number of AI planes generated, mission difficulty, and enemy capabilities/experience. A subtitle in the lower right-hand corner indicates the current AI strength level on a scale of 1-6. 2. Missions are either “sandbox” style, with multiple possible objectives to freely choose from, or a or set piece battle style with either dynamic scoring or a series of objectives to complete. Based on the historical plane sets, you decide if you are flying bomber, fighter or jabo missions. 3. Missions are designed around live pilots flying in one nationality, fighting against AI, but an enemy base is provided for limited human OPFOR if desired on some maps. 4. SRS auto join enabled for visitors to coordinate on comm’s. 5. The Mission Map is used extensively to update the current active objectives and give status updates on whether they are damaged or not. Based on the mission you may see an indication of movement of troops or patrols. As targets are destroyed you may see % of destruction indicating the condition of the target. Icons come off the map for destroyed targets. 6. Dynamic AI patrols. AI CAP patrols fly no regular patterns, each CAP flight has dozens of possible waypoints which are randomly generated in time, altitude, and direction, so the missions fly differently every time you fly them. 7. Enemy airfields that are "ACTIVE" will actively launch fighters to protect their area of control. If an Active Airfield is attacked and loses too many planes it becomes "SUPPRESSED" and no longer can launch aircraft but can still call for reinforcements from nearby patrol aircraft. If enough damage is done to an airfield it will become "DESTROYED" and will no longer defend itself at all. The damage required to Suppress and Destroy enemy airfields is also dynamically adjusted by the current map difficulty level. 8. AI performance: The AI behavior has been modified to be much more realistic manner as a wingman making them much more lethal when flying together. No longer will AI pilots fly in perfect formation (all the time) with the lead and then in combat fight independently. AI wingmen will actively protect their Lead and often fly in very loose formation to where you may not notice their wingman until you have been dragged and bagged. 9. Anti-Vulching routines built into mission logic, if you hang out over the primary base trying to vulch live players as they take off, you will be warned to retreat ASAP or be taken out by massive AAA volleys. Our mission builders continue to add and modify missions, but if you want to read more about the current mission set, follow the links below and visit our website. https://www.wingwalkers.org/topic/9054-ww1-sandbox-missions/ https://www.wingwalkers.org/topic/9045-ww2-sandbox-missions/ We have really enjoyed building, fine tuning and flying these missions, so we are excited for others who like flying as a team to try them out. Thanks so much to the flight sim community that has provided so much entertainment and enjoyment to our squad over the last 30 years Salute WWGeezer Wing Walkers “Once and Always” Communications Officer 7 4
DD_Perfesser Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 I've been visiting the WW2 server a few times the last while. It's been great fun!! Thanks very much for putting this together. A new spin on things. Salute! 2
[CPT]Crunch Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Flew this for the first time tonight, how did I miss this for so long, extreme fun. Fantastic missions, the two rotations I flew, first few sorties were solo, last part with a squad mate was even more fun. Two of my finest dead stick landings ever, intense action, perfect for introducing new players, low pressure action, just shoot em all up, if you can get past the fighter screens and guns. Thanks for sharing this work of art.
WWGeezer Posted February 7, 2023 Author Posted February 7, 2023 We have two excellent mission builders….WWCephas who focuses on Ww2 and WWBiker who builds and hosts the Ww1 server. What is unique is they share advancements and incorporate them in to both servers. We are lucky to have them and I am glad folks are enjoying their missions. 1
Nihil_ Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 having a lot of fun on the WW2 server the last couple of days. if anyone wants the multiplayer experience but co-op against AI for some mission based practice, or if you're under-geared/experienced and generally suck at pvp (like me), this is a great server. thx WW 1
WWCraven Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 Pleased to hear that you've enjoyed your time on our server, that'll make WWCephas, our mission builder very happy. Looking forward to seeing on again soon. Crave
WWCephas Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 Currently there are 50 missions on the WW2 Server rotation and 25 on the WWI server.
FeuerFliegen Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 This has been one of my favorite servers, especially for times when I'd otherwise do single-player. I highly encourage everyone to check it out! both WW1 and WW2! 1

=IRFC=Scarpo Posted January 1, 2024 Posted January 1, 2024 Hey all, I am new to the wing walker coop server. Can i get a discord link please
dd_delta7 Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 Hi thanks for the servers, the dangerdogz squad have been active here recently, could I please ask what the criteria is for rolling over missions as twice recently we have seemingly destroyed all targets and objectives but the map did not roll
WWChunk Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 You're going to have much better luck reporting this on Discord...the mission builders are there. https://discord.gg/p8sXPWvj
LF_Mark_Krieger Posted April 16, 2024 Posted April 16, 2024 Discovered the server a few months ago and it has become one of my favourites. We play there usually with my squadron. @WWCephas is a magnificent editor. I just would love that the players connected more to the discord to communicate or even better SRS, although Cephas told me they had SRS before but players did not use it. I like cooperation with other players and texting while in a dogfight is a bit complicated. 2
FeuerFliegen Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 (edited) If people were willing to be open minded to new servers that aren't always heavily populated, many would realize that this is one of the best servers ever created. Also... why is this server not pinned? @LukeFF is there anyone else I should tag? Edited April 17, 2024 by FeuerFliegen 1
1./JG42flesch Posted April 17, 2024 Posted April 17, 2024 Hello,I have a question for the planner. If a pilot lands he gets 100% points, if he is shot down and survives, he receives 100% points and if he is killed, he also receives 100% points. Wy not 100% for Landing, 50 % for Live and 0% for Killing in Aktion? Many Players fly not to back to land, jump off to save time, but they still get 100% points. Not very realistik.

I think that is not the case. If I remember it right, landing on friendly airfield is pointsx2.5, landing on other airfield x2 (it's true that it doesn't differenciate enemy or friendly territory as a limitation of the game), ditching pointsx1 and killed pointsx0,5. 1./JG42flesch Posted April 18, 2024 Posted April 18, 2024 (edited) Mark, you have right for "In Game Statistik". But on the Web Statistik allways 100% Points for all Flights, crashed, Shot downs and killed! Edited April 18, 2024 by 1./JG42flesch
WWDarkdiz Posted April 20, 2024 Posted April 20, 2024 We gave SRS a try, and although it worked, guys weren't comfortable using it. We were on Teamspeak for the longest time, which worked great, but cost $. Then we moved to discord, which is where we remain. Discord works for what we do, but has its limitations. Teamspeak worked, but also had its limitaitons. SRS worked, but guys were just not comfortable using it, so we remain on discord and accept its limitations
WWGeezer Posted August 9, 2024 Author Posted August 9, 2024 We continue to run our two servers for World War 1 and World War 2, they run 24 /7 and are open to all. WWCephas and WWBiker create new missions and improve the old ones as described at the top of this thread. Three nights a week we run specific missions for our Squad flying nights These missions run on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 PST. We wanted to publish our schedule so if you wanted to join us, you would know where to find us. We are on Discord and the address is in the mission brief. We typically have a mix of members and non-members and welcome you to join in if you are interested. Hope to see you there. 1
jokerBR Posted October 22, 2024 Posted October 22, 2024 Hi. Last couple days I tried to get into Wing Walkers server but the WW2 server is always freezing my game upon clicking "JOIN". Any hints?
