Heywooood Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 video discussion is nicely done - very informative history lesson for us westerners I wonder what the surprise is.....
JtD Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I am really wondering what you guys have learned from your trip to Stalingrad/Volgograd.Might be similar to flying a plane instead of only reading about it.
1CGS LukeFF Posted July 20, 2013 1CGS Posted July 20, 2013 (edited) Nice video! It's always cool to see that old black-and-white film footage. Interesting video. I'm surprised by the number of people visiting the war memorial. World War II continues to be a huge source of national pride for Russia and the other former Soviet states, so it's not really surprising. Perhaps I'm in the minority because I love flight simulation for the two things it embodies which I enjoy: flying and computers... I have to admit that today's update was a let down for me... I was hoping to see new videos or screenshots that show the sim (even if they are similar to things we've already seen (can never get enough), or read some comments from the developers about FMs, DMs, or terrain modeling, etc... History is ineresting, but in all actuality, I believe the majority of simmers are like myself: technical people with a passion for flying. Can I make a request that all future updates have at least a few screenshots (and preferably a video) from the simulator to augment days when there is a history-based vid? Even just listening to the sounds is exciting. I'd also love to hear about some of the technical programming challenges and how those difficulties are overcome or what is possible in the future given the technology. Don't get me wrong, I think the developers are doing a FANTASTIC job keeping their customers involved and I LOVE the fact that they understand the intrinsic value of REGULAR, PREDICTABLE, updates to create a groundswell of excitement and consistency among the fan base. My request is to further that excitement. Based on what we've seen thus far, it will be impossible for anyone to grow "tired" of seeing more screenshots and videos, even if it IS in pre-alpha. I do believe this simulator will be a worthy successor to IL-2 and I've been watching this stuff for ~26 years... Plenty of people here and on other flight sim sites are interested in the history behind these sims. One week without screenshots and in-game videos isn't going to kill you. FuriousMeow Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Not a good idea, actually. The museum is being shut down and the aircraft are being sold. The B-17 is already gone. http://www.warbirdsnews.com/warbird-news/breaking-jerry-yagen-military-aviation-museum-collection-sale.html Wow, I was just there two months ago and didn't seem like it was having problems. The B17 was still there at the time.
JtD Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 World War II continues to be a huge source of national pride for Russia and the other former Soviet states, so it's not really surprising. Not surprising given it was Victory Day. But I didn't remember they went there on that day.
Uufflakke Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 Might be similar to flying a plane instead of only reading about it. The flight I fully understand but a turistic trip in summertime visiting the obligatory monuments to get an impression of Stalingrad in WWII wintertime is something different.
DD_BadAim Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 It must be really difficult, this business of knowing everything. 1
Zak Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 The flight I fully understand but a turistic trip in summertime visiting the obligatory monuments to get an impression of Stalingrad in WWII wintertime is something different. Winter is cold and snowy - that's common for central Russia. Winter Volgograd would not help the development anyway, but Luftwaffe's aero footage helps enormously!
Heywooood Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 knowing the key elements and timelines for the warfare they are working to simulate is one thing...visiting the location where the skirmishes and battles took place and laying them out in your minds eye is yet another I appreciate the effort and understand the need for developing this level of knowledge - since that location is better suited for visiting in summer, and since monuments in remembrance of what was given by those who fought, and what was saved...and since time travel to the actual battles (except in film footage) is not yet practical - this mission was completely understandable. Laughable really to challenge the need to do it, by anyone who appreciates research - or honor, for that matter - on behalf of ones own national history...especially in the case of a depiction - or work of art - describing that period in time in that location, for publication.
JG13_opcode Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I dunno, I like to think if I was developing a Stalingrad sim, I'd be more motivated after having gone to see it. At the very least, I can see a value in going to visit. A great deal of the British players had their knickers in a twist over CLOD because the hedgerows didn't look quite right. Maybe they're trying to get the landscape of Stalingrad right?
Bearcat Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I guss this is sort of like taking a trip to Normandy if doing a FPS that starts on D Day. To me the visit makes sense as just another part of the process.. and even if it is the spring I don't think that they would have to stretch their imaginations too far to imagine what it was like that winter back during the battle as far as the look of the land goes ... I imagine that the purpose of this trip was more of an intangible thing ... either way I enjoyed the video.. and who knows .. for all we know some of that footage might wind up in the sim as a short biopic of the Battle.
Skoshi_Tiger Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Interesting video of Stalingrad, Thanks! I liked the armoured boat. I wonder if we'll have one modeled in the sim to defend or attack? Nice small target mounting a couple of anti-aircraft guns. Doubt there would be any chance of skip bombing such a small target. I'd have to learn how to dive bomb If I was after targets that small!
JtD Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 It had been stated that with the Volga being frozen in wintertime, there'll be no meaningful ship targets. But you can practice attacking it in good old Il-2 1946.
15[Span.]/JG51Costa Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 As we say in Spain: A visit is better than a thousand postcards!
Rjel Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I can't imagine the difficulty in hitting a fast moving target with AA mounted on a small boat in choppy waters. It would be hard enough on solid ground.
Heywooood Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 (edited) i suppose range has something to do with it...and isnt it better to have a gun than not have a gun on your boat during wartime? that said, I don't think I'd try firing that gun unless it was pointed forward...a beam shot would likely roll that skinny boat right over... migmadmarine Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Interestingly, that has a T-34 mod. 1941 turret on it, I would have thought that would be more sutible for engaging shore targets...
Dutch Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Thanks for the update. Any possiblity of some ground warfare shots?
Heywooood Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 curious about this as well...I keep seeing reference to some form of (AI) ground warfare and in RoF, the shelling that goes on in No Mans Land adds some to the sense of an ongoing battle that you in the air are part of... taken a step further, to have AI units involved in skirmishes around the map, according to historical record,...with or without loose infantry (although that would be a whole new deal if it were possible) ground units engaging each other in a realistic fashion, would be really immersive
hiro Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Thanks for the video of your trip and some footage and explanation of Stalingrad. You guys and gals are really looking to get the experience out to us, and that's a part of it. looking forward to more

senseispcc Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 (edited) Are said pics to appear here as well? I absolutely refuse to use Facef*** or any other "social media" nonsense, you know. ++++1 "spy/sell media" is a better name of them. Otherwise nice video so we never forget why "they" died. Found a short aerial footage of Luftwaffe bombing Stalingrad (after about four and a half minutes). https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=uLAa_ZZUNEQ&t=282 Probably you've already found out but when you search on "Deutsche Wochenschau Stalingrad" you get many interesting video hits on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCNWYlx4evY&list=PL9A53081677F95BFE Edited July 24, 2013 by Uufflakke
Foobar Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 (edited) Thanks for that. I've missed it last friday because of beeing in Norway. Edited August 2, 2013 by [PGP]Foobar
