campaign settings for a "low skill" pilot

Hey all,

I've been trying to play PWCG for a bit and have been running into some issues staying alive without just completely avoiding engagements. My current VVS campaign virtually every mission has 4:1 odds against us even with other allied aircraft in the mix. I have about 140 hours in IL-2 and certainly dont know when to use what maneuvers, but these numbers are murder on my squadron. We go out in a patrol of 4, and we meet between 8 and 16 aircraft virtually every time. I've tried baiting off smaller groups but it's been difficult to lure only one group instead of all of them. i've already got everything turned down as much i can see, air density is set "low" in simple config so i'm not sure what else can be done about it.

so my big question here is what is the most "ideal" campaign settings for a newer pilot who can barely handle one enemy aircraft at a time? (including start date and map) So far i've been flying the MiG-3 which took time to get used to, but at this point handles fine (though the Yaks and La-5s are much easier to handle) i would like to fly as not germany, but i'm not 100% set on that.

Thank you all for any input on this!

Low air and low AAA are the most important.

You can also go to Campaign ->Configuration -> Advanced Configuration -> Mission Limits

Max Fighter Flights Per side: Fighter Campaign

If you reduce that you will encounter fewer fighters.

I would suggest purchasing the Hurricane if you haven't already, and using it in the earliest campaign you have.  It has a pretty good edge on the early German fighters both in speed and maneuverability, and if you set your loadout to either Shvak or 20mm cannons you'll have enough firepower that pretty much any hit will drive a fighter off if it doesn't kill them outright.  Both setups are low-ammo, however, so you'll have to get used to firing in short bursts.

Also, don't be ashamed to set ammo/damage to unlimited to give yourself a chance to build some skills for a little while.  Turn off realism settings and then gradually turn them back on as you become more capable.

Finally, the AI usually struggles keeping up with a split-s/Immelman on easy settings.  It's a simple way to reset an engagement with isolated opponents.

Touche.  It works for me, anyway.  Seems to go after them better than anything else early in the war.

@FodderMonkey Early in the war you might be stuck with the .303s.  I put date restrictions on some of the mods.
