Tinku74 Posted February 6, 2022 Posted February 6, 2022 (edited) I finally bit the bullet and got a horrendously overpriced GTR 3080, because I started dabbling in VR and the 1080 wouldn't cut it. I just stuck it in my existing rig, and got a nice performance boost. But I suspect my motherboard and CPU (i7-7700K CPU) might be a bottleneck. Would a motherboard & CPU upgrade provide a meaningful performance improvement? If so, any hints as to what I might want to upgrade to? Thanks for any tips. chiliwili69 Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 In fact you got an RTX 3080Ti, so Yes, your CPU will be now your bottleneck for certain scenarios and settings. Currently the best CPU for IL-2 in VR is the i9-12900K. But more modest CPUs like i5-12600K or Ryzen 5 5600X will give you almost 90fps in most of the scenarios and high settings. You can take a look at this SYN_VANDER bench results table: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gJmnz_nVxI6_dG_UYNCCpZVK2-f8NBy-y1gia77Hu_k 1
AtomicP Posted February 7, 2022 Posted February 7, 2022 I don't have VR but I do have a Ryzen 5 5600X and I'm more than happy with it. It got rid of most of the issues I was having with time dilation (the slowing down of the simulation despite good fps) and although it does happen on occasion, it's much more rare. I'm limited now by the GPU, a 1060 6 GB. It'll be a good while before I upgrade that card.
Tinku74 Posted February 7, 2022 Author Posted February 7, 2022 Thank you both for your replies. I'll look into that Ryzen 5 / i5. There does not seem to be much difference in FPS in the bench test result, but a huge difference in prices between R5 and i9. Another question that shows my ignorance about hardware: can I just stick the new CPU into my existing motherboard, or would I need to change the motherboard as well?

Hi Tinku, no, you can't because socket is away different. AMD Ryzen need AM4 socket (chipset B550 or X570) while 12'gen Intel's need LGA 1700 socket. Intel 12 Gen will need DDR4 or DDR5 depending of motherboard. In summary, to change you processor, you will need change mobo and RAM too.
Tinku74 Posted February 7, 2022 Author Posted February 7, 2022 Thanks ErwinP, oder sollte ich „danke“ sagen? I found a MoBo / CPU Combo online that I might go for. Was not expecting my DDR4 RAM to not work with a new MoBo… Too bad.

Was not expecting my DDR4 RAM to not work with a new MoBo… That depends on what RAM you had. I went from an Intel 7th gen to 10th gen and kept the RAM. If you get a DDR5 motherboard, then no, otherwise double-check the RAM compatibility list on the new motherboard and you might be surprised. Maybe. 1

On the official web page for your upcoming motherboard , they should have a ram compatibility list. Check that first.
Tinku74 Posted February 10, 2022 Author Posted February 10, 2022 Ok gents, thank you very much. Will do that. I’ll keep a lookout for an i9, most likely. After looking at several benchmark websites, I decided to delay the MoBo pichase a bit, as I had to replace my iPad, which made a dent in finances.
=420=Syphen Posted February 13, 2022 Posted February 13, 2022 The Alderlake i7 or i9 are the winning choices right now.
Panzerlang Posted February 18, 2022 Posted February 18, 2022 I must have lucked into some kind of perfect setup. I have an 8600k at 5ghz with a 1080Ti and find IL2 runs perfectly well with a G2 VR. Maybe a combo of good RAM and Mobo too, dunno. From all I've read though I should be struggling. I do have an RTX 3080Ti coming tomorrow, in anticipation of the upcoming updates that will be more taxing.
