Spotting - do you get better at it, is it settings, or is VR spotting just bad?

I use VR and I have the same spotting, just a little lower ID capacity

I've got my HP Reverb G2 this Friday and only had the chance to do 2.5 hours worth of flying on Combat Box but I confirm this. I can spot planes from more distance than in my 1440p monitor, but IDing them is another topic. I think that the ID distance may be similar to a monitor, but planes tend to be more pixelated until they are close or you use zoom.

It is really the only downside I've found for VR so far and has been a real blast.

No idea, I do not have this, my crosshair remains pixel-perfectly sharp (it'd drive me bonkers if it didn't), in fact I usually use the gunsight to make sure my headset is sitting correctly on my face (due to a mild asymmetry I have to yaw it slightly to get both eyes in the sweet spot).

So there is still something very wrong with my current setting therefore, and my assumption was incorrect.

I suspect that I messed up with one of those "or_" values parameters

      or_ca = 0.00290 -> No idea to what this corresponds to
      or_dummy = 0 -> No idea what is that for, but does not seem important
      or_enable = 1 -> This is ok
      or_height = 2470
      or_hud_rad = 1
      or_hud_size = 0.75000
      or_ipd = 0.06641 -> Could it be due to this value that mess up with crosshair neatness and focal point?
      or_render_eye = 1 -> This is ok
      or_sipdc = -0.12000 -> This is ok, it is the -12% correction IPD
      or_width = 2528

Most of those values are output values, they are not read from the .cfg but are simply outputted to it. The crosshair is a texture and thus affected by texture-related settings, selecting the wrong mip-map could make it blurry so perhaps you have set something in your nvidia settings that applies to textures?

(or_ipd and or_ca are read from SteamVR, you can try this, change the IPD slider on your headset and when you quit the value for ipd will be different -  I believe ca stands for "chromatic aberration" and is the coefficient of correction required but I might be wrong, in any case that is not read in but is only outputted to).

You are a mine of information 335th_grFirdimigdi, and I cannot state how thankful I am for your help.

In Nvidia setting I just have Texture filtering - anisotropic sample optimization ON, and texture quality set to HIGH PERFORMANCE.

All the rest are with default values. I doubt it would come from there, although I might turn OFF anisotropic sample optimization just to compare.

At this point, I am thinking that suboptimal IPD settings could potentially make it appear out of focus, maybe IPS wrong settings are more obvious depending on the actual distance, and hence makes crosshair appear blurry while cockpit is generally neat, not crystal clear with G2, but neat enough to read all, and planes at distance are neat.

I need to play more with IPD since I havent had it measured by an optician.

Thanks again. So many parameters!!!

You can enable the debug mode in the FSR mod and set the radius to 0.2 or so - if your IPD is correct you should see only one circle, if not then it'll appear as two slightly overlapping ones. Adjust until you only see one circle when your eyes are relaxed and trying to focus "in the distance", don't try to focus on the UI if you are doing it in the hangar/menus as those are way too close.

I used fsr mod with really small circles to setup my in game % ipd, but i was under the impression that it was less effective to adjust physical ipd slider in g2, maybe i need to give it another try.

I use normally cockpit small text (like spitfire IX radius sight adjustment), not UI. But maybe those are still too close.

You sir deserve the medal of clearness!! The first time my Pimax 8kx has this super clear picture everybody is talking about. I was close, but now its nearly perfect. Thank you so much for the tip. ?

I tried changing quality to high performance and it was terrible. The overall visuals were blurry with shimmering pretty much everywhere. Returned it to quality and visuals were much better again. I think the vr flight sim guy said to set it to high performance and it would not affect the clarity but it made the visuals very bad. His recommendations are specific to msfs.

I don t observe any shimmering at all. Planes appears crystal clear. Maybe the shimmering was due to combination with other factors.

I will try to revert to quality anyway to see if there is any difference.

What is the consensus regarding applyMIPBias for G2 in IL2?

I have it set to false, does it make a difference?

    // if enabled, applies a negative LOD bias to texture MIP levels
    // should theoretically improve texture detail in the upscaled image
    // IMPORTANT: if you experience issues with rendering like disappearing
    // textures or strange patterns in the rendering, try turning this off
    // by setting the value to false.
    "applyMIPBias": false
